The Gospel According to St. Mark's

From Peter Sherer, Senior Warden

This is the last time I am writing to you about Shrine Mont on the Hill on Saturday. We will have breakfast at 9 am and then we have two 45 minute sessions where you can chip in your best ideas on two of the challenges that are facing us. The good news is that will be creating a future that inspires us and laying out a road map for the early days of our new Rector starting next year.

After we have done our work we are going to have a great lunch organized by Penny and Brock Hansen and then we are going to square dance. Big fun. Bigger fun if you are there.

We will be joined on Saturday by Michele Morgan who is going to serve as our Interim Rector starting on June 29th. Michele will preach this Sunday at both the 10 am and 5 pm services. Please introduce yourself to her and make her feel welcome.

On Sunday we are all going to dress even more casually than usual as we would at Shrine Mont. After the 10 am service we will have a Pub Lunch organized by Jim Steed and Linda Ewald. If you can bring a salad and some bread that would help them a lot. Many thanks to Jim and Linda.

At this point there is no need to register. Just come.

Looking forward to seeing you.

Hugs

Peter
From the Reverend R. Justice Schunior

Friends,

This Sunday morning at 10am we will not be using a bulletin or a hymnal...okay, we will actually have a kind of bulletin. But basically it will just give you the words to the music we're singing together. If you have been to our parish retreat at Shrine Mont in Virginia, or really to any parish retreat, you know that one of the joys (and challenges) of worshipping together is that we don't have the tools that normally support the church service. No books, no organ, no printed readings; it's an adventure! So, we're trying to incorporate that adventurous kind of worship into our Shrine Mont on the Hill weekend. I invite you to a service where all you need to do is show up, sing, pray, and listen! I hope it will be a nice change of pace from our usual wordy worship. Maybe new inspiration will come to us without the work of navigating a script. I hope so!

Also, we will be welcoming our new interim rector, Michele Morgan, as guest preacher! I'm really looking forward to what she has to say and introducing her to this busy, creative community she will be leading starting June 29.

See you soon!

Peace,
Justi

P.S. I know that there will be many fascinating conversations around our challenges this weekend; please go to the group where you are most called. However, I want to offer a plug for worship: we have lots of ideas and plans for worship in the world AND we want to hear from you!
From Doris Burton, Junior Warden

Dear Fellow Parishioners:

We have a new building (hurray!) and with it come new ways to use, care for, and access our space. If you are a neophyte to any of these spaces, please treat them gently and don't force anything (or--ask for training first!). For example: the plexi panels on the wall of Baxter Hall slide; they don't open like a traditional door.

Last week, while trying to release the lock on the foyer door to the nave, someone stripped the key access making it impossible to keep the door unlocked. The locksmith repair fee was $270. Last night, the emergency exit gate was found to have been jammed--someone tried to  push it open when it opens out. Many of our exterior doors are now electronic. Locksmiths are not cheap--and this is our money spent on repairs.

If you would like training on/information about any space--kitchen, storage, meeting rooms, nave, etc.--please ask me. I will happily arrange a short (or long, as necessary!) session for you.

Should you notice something wrong--broken equipment, damage to our space, something is missing or doesn't belong or is out of place-- email me (put this in your phone: stmarksjuniorwarden@gmail.com).

If you are on-site, and there is a difficult person, flood, electrical issue, fire, etc:  look for the bright yellow Emergency Contact sheets posted (Sexton's Office, foyer info board wall, mail rack wall[2nd floor],  kitchen). Please follow the instructions and/or call the appropriate person. Last night, a parishioner called at 9:45 to report Baxter Hall door was not lockable: someone unlocked it with a key and didn't re-lock it. Former Junior Warden and current Emergency Responder Charlie Rupp walked over to secure the building.

The Fabric Committee members do all we can to protect what we have but we need everyone taking responsibility for our building and keeping eyes open for something amiss.

It truly does take a village.

Gratefully,

Doris

From the Director of Music

Dear St. Mark's,

This Sunday is the first opportunity for you to sing with the Summer Choir!  Just show up for the 9am rehearsal in the nave and we'll prepare you on all the music to be sung during the service.  This is an excellent way to try out the choir if you're curious or to have your fill with minimal rehearsal time and commitment.  It'll be fun!  Among the music we'll be singing is Peter, Paul, and Mary's "Come and Go With Me."  An excellent video and recording is available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXEf_Wld8hA&spfreload=1

Peace,
JEFF
