The Gospel According to St. Mark's

From the Reverend R. Justice Schunior

Friends,

I want to thank  the entire St. Mark's community for a truly glorious Holy Week. We began the week with an original piece of dance and music - composed by Jeff Kempskie, choreographed by Rosie Brooks, and envisioned by Jessie Babcock. St. Mark's continues to be a true lab for liturgy; we try new things and sometimes, like on Palm Sunday, we do something that is truly sublime.

The week continued with services on Maundy Thursday - we reached a new record in foot washing and heard a fantastic sermon from the Rev. Josh Thomas. Then on Good Friday we shared communion from the reserved sacrament; walked the Stations of the Cross using the Rev. Paul Roberts Abernathy's beautiful liturgy; and prayed for social justice.

On Saturday we lit the new fire and welcomed guest preacher Cara Spaccarelli from Christ Church, DC at our Easter Vigil as well as Reformation Lutheran and First Trinity Lutheran. And on Sunday morning we popped our champagne corks and celebrated Easter with all its magnificent joy. After the 5pm service we had our first Easter egg hunt for the growing number of children in that congregation.

For many years I have known liturgy to be the work of the people, but in no year has it seemed more real to me that this is the case. So many of us worked together to provide bulletins, to read Scripture, to wash feet, to sing in the choir, to simply be present. My heart is full this Eastertide and I pray that joy is also with you this season. There is much that is changing and about to change about St. Mark's, but this church is in good hands - the hands of its parishioners.

Peace,

Justi

From the Director of Music

Dear St. Mark's,

This coming Sunday we will continue the Second Sunday in Easter St. Mark's tradition of offering an opportunity for everyone to sing the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah during the Offertory.

I've always been amazed by the large groups of people that come up to the chancel area to sing the Hallelujah Chorus each year - I've counted 30+ people at each service, even, the vast majority of whom are not part of the choir!  My hope is that a small fraction of those same people might consider singing with the Chancel Choir.  Please, if you or someone you know has an interest in or love of singing, please contact me and let me know.  My impression is that most people are hesitant to sing with the choir because of the time commitment.  While it can be a lot, we offer quite a bit of flexibility and allow people to sing when they're able to, as long as they attend enough rehearsals to know the music well.  Our next Chancel Choir rehearsal is Thursday April 16th at 7:30pm in the Nave if you wish to drop in.

On a different note, I wish to thank everyone for the great response to Palm Sunday's Passion dance with music.  If you are interested in watching and hearing it again (or for the first time if you missed it), here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzImpy7kLjY You are welcome to share this link with others if you would like.

I will be away this Sunday morning getting some rest and taking a break.  Our guest organist will be Mr. Jason West.

Peace,
JEFF
