The Gospel According to St. Mark's

From the Reverend Justi Schunior

Friends,

Many of you know that preventing gun violence is one of the issues that is of greatest interest to me.  In December I was pleased that St. Mark's was able to use our new space to welcome the Newtown Foundation and advocates from around the country to lobby Congress and take part in a memorial service at the National Cathedral for victims of gun violence.

Last fall when the DC City Council was considering legislation to regulate the carrying of concealed weapons in our city, I testified in favor of including houses of worship among those places where such weapons could not be carried.  With strong support from our own Bishop, Mariann Budde, and a broad spectrum of faith leaders, that provision passed.

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America is a non-partisan grassroots movement to mobilize moms and families to advocate for stronger gun laws.  Parishioner, Maureen Shea, is now volunteering to do outreach to the faith community for the DC Chapter.  One of their projects is the making of Mother's Dream Quilts that symbolize the human toll of gun violence in America. The fully assembled quilts show how gun violence has become part of the fabric of America, but also show the strength, power and beauty of moms joining together to find healing and solutions.  Some of the finished quilts will be shown in cities around the country.

On April 11, St. Mark's will host a Moms Demand Action quilting bee from 9:30-1:00.  If you would like to take part, please contact Maureen at mtshea@aol.com.  You don't have to be a quilter or expert sewer to participate.  Everyone who contributes fabric will also submit a statement of their "Mother's Dream" for children.

If we are to have a world of love and justice, we must end gun violence in its many manifestations.  The Mother's Dream Quilt is one way to acknowledge the toll of gun violence in America and hosting this event is one of the ways St. Mark's can play its part.

Peace,

Justi

From the Vestry
Thank you to all those who participated in our Annual Parish Meeting last Sunday, March 15. We now have new and vital leadership for our community. While not everyone who ran for office could be elected, it was inspiring to see such a diverse and talented group of people put themselves forward for service. The Parish elected the following members to serve in the designated offices:
Peter Sherer, Senior Warden
Doris Burton, Junior Warden
Doug Jackson, Vestry (Class of 2018)
Christina White, Vestry (Class of 2018)
Karen Wiedemann, Vestry (Class of 2018)
Bill Dickinson, Diocesan Delegate

Maundy Thursday Sign-ups!

Online Table Sign Up is Open for the April 2nd Maundy Thursday Agape Dinner & Tenebrae Service! This year we are copying the successful sign up process used for our Discernment dinners. Go to Sign-Up Genius at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f094ea5a929a5f94-maundy  to sign up for a table. Select a table and write which room temperature dish you will bring. Additionally, you may sign up in the foyer after each service. All are welcome! If you are sitting next to a newcomer this morning, please invite them to join you in signing up for a table.

Each table, which seats 8 or 10 people, needs a volunteer Table Captain to coordinate table activities. Good news: No extra fees this year! All you have to do is sign up so we know how many to expect and come. Nursery is available.

Maundy Service is one of our community's signature events. It begins with a BYOB Happy Holy Fellowship Hour (6:00-7:00) in Baxter Hall. Concurrently, you may participate in a quiet Foot-Washing Service in the Nave (6:00-7:00). These events are followed by our Maundy Thursday Agape Potluck Dinner and Conversation (7:00-8:00) in the Nave; and Clean-up 10-10:30. After dinner, tables are stripped bare to begin our spiritually moving Tenebrae Service around 8:30, in which the lights and candles are gradually extinguished into total darkness as the readings lead up to Jesus' arrest and crucifixion.

Volunteers are welcomed and needed for each activity. Contact: Jessie Babcock/Alvin Moseberry for Happy Holy Fellowship Hour (Jessie.babcock@gmail.com); David Deutsch for Foot-Washing & Tenebrae Service (dsd@his.com ); and Valeri Byrd for the Agape Dinner ( valbyrd22@yahoo.com). Looking forward to seeing you there!
