The Gospel According to St. Mark's

From the Reverend Justi Schunior

Friends,

This Sunday, after a combined morning service at 10am, we will have our annual parish meeting. I hope you can be there to thank our outgoing senior and junior wardens, Grady Hedgespeth and Michael Summey, as well as three vestry members, Jim Steed, Amy Kovac-Ashley, and Pam Lacey. These individuals have given their time and talents to our church during a time of great transition and stress; I am so grateful for their service. We will also be electing new wardens and three new vestry members. The next few years will also be a time of great transition and stress; we will need excellent leadership. Fortunately, we have great candidates. You can read about them here.
An added bonus this Sunday - the music! You can read Jeff's description of the service below. Traditionally, the fourth Sunday - Laetare Sunday - in Lent is when we can all take a break from our Lenten disciplines and indulge in lovely music. Perhaps most of us are not really undergoing severe hardship and austerity this Lent, however, this tradition is still a great excuse for some extra beauty in the service.

See you Sunday!

Peace,
Justi

Maundy Thursday Sign-ups!

Online Table Sign Up is Open for the April 2nd Maundy Thursday Agape Dinner & Tenebrae Service! This year we are copying the successful sign up process used for our Discernment dinners. Go to Sign-Up Genius at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f094ea5a929a5f94-maundy to sign up for a table. Select a table and write which room temperature dish you will bring. Additionally, you may sign up in the foyer after each service. All are welcome! If you are sitting next to a newcomer this morning, please invite them to join you in signing up for a table.

Each table, which seats 8 or 10 people, needs a volunteer Table Captain to coordinate table activities. Good news: No extra fees this year! All you have to do is sign up so we know how many to expect and come. Nursery is available.

Maundy Service is one of our community's signature events. It begins with a BYOB Happy Holy Fellowship Hour (6:00-7:00) in Baxter Hall. Concurrently, you may participate in a quiet Foot-Washing Service in the Nave (6:00-7:00). These events are followed by our Maundy Thursday Agape Potluck Dinner and Conversation (7:00-8:00) in the Nave; and Clean-up 10-10:30. After dinner, tables are stripped bare to begin our spiritually moving Tenebrae Service around 8:30, in which the lights and candles are gradually extinguished into total darkness as the readings lead up to Jesus' arrest and crucifixion.

Volunteers are welcomed and needed for each activity. Contact: Jessie Babcock/Alvin Moseberry for Happy Holy Fellowship Hour (Jessie.babcock@gmail.com); David Deutsch for Foot-Washing & Tenebrae Service (dsd@his.com); and Valeri Byrd for the Agape Dinner (valbyrd22@yahoo.com). Looking forward to seeing you there!

From the Director of Music

Dear St. Mark's,

The Chancel Choir has been hard at work preparing some beautiful music for this coming Sunday's morning service.  The group will sing Franz Joseph Haydn's Missa Brevis No. 7 in B-flat, which has the nickname "Little Organ Mass."  The charming and elegant music presents the traditional Latin mass text in a condensed form.  The music is so condensed, in fact, that in the Credo movement, each voice part simultaneously sings different words from the [lengthy] text in order to get through it more quickly.  We are very fortunate to have a trio of string players accompanying the choir.  I hope you will find the music uplifting as we take a bit of break during this mid-Lent Laetare Sunday.

Peace,
JEFF
