The Gospel According to St. Mark's

From Justi Schunior, Associate Rector
Friends,
I know many of you were here when we dedicated our new space on September 28. It was truly a glorious celebration. It's been fun to celebrate and to bask in the glow of a long project completed (almost!). But it's been even more rewarding over these past couple of weeks to see our new space in action. This past week we held a discussion and book signing of parishoner Lou Bayard's latest work, Roosevelt's Beast. Our new parish hall was a great space to greet new people and long time members of St. Mark's for a fascinating discussion of history, pyschology, and the human spirit.

Dance classes are ongoing in the studio across from where the church offices are located. The St. Mark's Players is beginning rehearsals for Dracula, their fall production, which I cannot wait to see. A wedding rehearsal takes place this evening. Every day there are meetings - the planning team envisioning our next director of youth and family ministries; life, community, and faith; advisory committee meetings; outreach board. We're planning an art show for the first week of December...the church of the holy activity is back!
There are still glitches and annoyances with our new space; and there is so much anxiety and uncertainty about what will happen next and who will lead our community. However, St. Mark's is doing good work every day. The space we all have built is being put to good use. We are an inclusive community that strives to reach out to all kinds of people, regardless of their faith background, for the purpose of living lives committed to love and justice.
In the coming weeks we will be asking for your financial commitment to this community. This is not a referendum on whether you like or dislike the current leadership of St. Mark's or the direction it is taking. It is a request that you faithfully give so that this place can continue to be a space for reflection, discussion, challenging conversation, and meaningful transformation. We ask that you prayerfully consider the many ways that St. Mark's is a haven for those seeking community. Our new space is grand and it took so much faith and effort to bring it from dream into reality. We all need to ensure that it remains a reality.
Peace to you and yours,
Justi
In other news, yesterday I was privileged to testify yesterday at a meeting of the City Council's Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety regarding "License to Carry a Pistol Amendment Act of 2014". Specifically, I was requesting that houses of worship be exempt from any "open carry" legislation. You can read my testimony here. If you would like background on the legislation, see here.
