SEPTEMBER 2016 - By The Way

PASTOR'S MESSAGE
REV. RICHARD E. MALMBERG

Dear Friends,

I am in no hurry for the summer to be over. I have been enjoying settling in to the rhythms of Little Home Church. It has been a pleasure and a great way to get my bearings before we go careening into the fall.

The weekly Bible Study has been a great midweek touchstone of community, devotion and devoted contemplation in community. Already, we have read and studied the entire book of Micah, and in the two weeks of September, we will study the short prophetic book of Haggai. After that, those gathered will choose where we head next. All are welcome, every Wednesday morning at 10 am in the pastor's office.

It has come to my attention that it has been two years since Little Home Church engaged in the important work and bold decisions of the New Beginnings process. As we embark on our own new beginning, we should continue the work of discernment and live out our new reality together.

Yours in Christ,

MODERATOR'S REPORT
'CAREENING INTO THE FALL...'

As Rev. Richard so ably described in his letter above, for some of us we are madly transitioning from the summer days and 'careening into the fall.' Much is happening at Little Home Church between now and the end of the year...much about which to be pleased and joyful. This issue of By the Way surely reflects the activity, involvement, and progress being made on many fronts, including the seven Ministries, Personnel Committee, Small Groups, and major fundraising projects that directly support our promise to six local community service agencies. Thank you to everyone for your participation and efforts...such a blessing!

Also, now that our new pastor has his 'bearings' we will be quickly continuing our work with the New Beginnings/Re-visioning Team. We are looking forward to Rev. Richard's perspective and guidance in identifying the mission focus for LHC.

My invitation to everyone: Join it all...! Play a part, big or small, in as many things happening at this church as possible. My gardener's heart is showing when I say, 'Be a part of the path, a pebble or a stone, that leads the way forward'...

My best to you all,

Kathleen Sullivan Kaska

MODERATOR ELECT'S UPDATE
150TH RENOVATION PLANS

In a brief article last month, I shared the news that we are embarking upon a giant renovation project in anticipation of the church's 150th anniversary in 2021.

We are actually underway! We have retained Sharp Architects, Inc., of DeKalb, to assist us. Here is a link to their website: http://www.sharparchitectsinc.com/

Lisa Sharp and her team will begin work on a three-phase proposal on September 1. Phase 1 will involve a full assessment of our properties. This phase will take 4-6 weeks to complete, and will include architectural, structural, and engineering reviews, and a survey of our property. Phase 2 is titled Concept Development, and it will involve meetings and discussion regarding priorities, recommendations, renovation/repair options, and improvements. This phase will take about 4 weeks. The final 4-week phase will involve budgeting.

We will be meeting frequently with the architectural team and I will continue to provide updates to the congregation. If you have any questions about this exciting venture, please contact me.

LARRY'S NOTES

"To achieve great things, two things are needed;
a plan, and not quite enough time." - Leonard Bernstein

I did have a plan but where did all that summer time go? Nevertheless, I'm going to side with Bernstein and say that great things are going to happen this Fall in music at Little Home Church. Join us whenever you can worship.

Music in Sunday School will begin on the September 18. We will explore singing and bells once again.

Choir practice will start on September 7 at 7 pm. Come check us out!

The choir will sing on September 11 at the Outdoor Worship service with "the band."

Bell Choir practices will be on September 14 and 28 to prepare for an October worship service. Rehearsals start at 8:15 pm on those Wednesday nights.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
A NEW CHURCH YEAR...AND NEW PLANS

The Christian Education Ministry committee of Karen Kaluzsa, Lori Haseltine, Larry Dieffenbach, Kathy Haben and Pastor Richard need your help! We are looking for teenage volunteers to help teach Sunday School to the children. A commitment to every Sunday is NOT required. If you are willing to volunteer for an occasional Sunday, please contact any of the committee members or the church office. Thank you!

We are also planning a Series of Field Trips throughout the year to places in the Chicagoland area that will enrich our understanding of the themes in the church calendar. We plan to visit the Bahai Temple in Wilmette on October 29 so mark your calendars. We will also visit FermiLab in Batavia in the winter, and the Holocaust Museum in Skokie during Lent. To help us plan these outings, please let Karen Kaluzsa know if you are interested in going on such excursions and if you prefer Saturday or Sunday afternoons!

CONGREGATIONAL LIFE
HOSPITALITY HELP IS NEEDED

The Congregational Life Ministry will be providing the hospitality for both the Blessing of the Hounds event on Sunday, October 2, and the Installation of Our New Pastor later that same day. Volunteers are needed to provide cookies, pastries, and beverages for our church's hospitality table which will be set up at the front of the Courtyard Garden. This is always a wonderful way to welcome the many visitors who come to see the hunt parade and the blessing. We would also like to provide red and gold mums to line the church steps, seating for Seniors, and an activity for the children.

Also, later that that day, our church will officially be installing our new pastor in a service scheduled for 4 pm. A fellowship celebration will follow and we will be needing help to provide food and beverages for the gathering. More details are to follow...please mark your calendars...and email Barb if you are able to help...!

Thank you,

FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES
'WHAT DREAMS MAY COME' - SEPTEMBER 9 AT 7 PM

"What Dreams May Come" is a movie from 1998 starring the late Robin Williams. After Chris Nielson (Robin Williams) dies in a car accident, he is guided through the afterlife by his spirit guide, Albert (Cuba Gooding Jr.). His new world is beautiful and can be whatever Chris imagines. Even his children are there. But, when his wife, Annie commits suicide and is sent to hell, Chris ignores Albert's warnings and journeys there to save her. Upon arrival, Chris finds that rescuing Annie will be more difficult than he'd imagine.

Come join the group to watch and discuss a movie at Little Home Church. Beforehand, some of us gather for a meal at O'Hare's Pub, Rt. 59 and Army Trail Road.

OCTOBER BOOK - LIFE IN A JAR

Life in a Jar - The Courageous Story of Irena Sendler by Jack Mayer
During World War II, Irena Sendler, a Polish Catholic social worker, organized a rescue network of fellow social workers to save 2,500 Jewish children from certain death in the Warsaw ghetto. Incredibly, after the war her heroism, like that of many others, was suppressed by communist Poland and remained virtually unknown for 60 years. Unknown, that is, until three high school girls from an economically depressed, rural school district in southeast Kansas stumbled upon a tantalizing reference to Sendler's rescues, which they fashioned into a history project, a play they called Life in a Jar. Their innocent drama was first seen in Kansas, then the Midwest, then New York, Los Angeles, Montreal, and finally Poland, where they elevated Irena Sendler to a national hero, championing her legacy of tolerance and respect for all people. Life in a Jar: The Irena Sendler Project is a Holocaust history and more. It is the inspirational story of Protestant students from Kansas, each carrying her own painful burden, each called in her own complex way to the history of a Catholic woman who knocked on Jewish doors in the Warsaw ghetto and, in Sendler's own words, "tried to talk the mothers out of their children." Inspired by Irena Sendler, they are living examples of the power of one person to change the world and models for young people everywhere.

And don't forget, at our meeting on Sept. 6 we will be discussing 'Tortilla Curtain' by T.C. Boyle

COMMUNITY CRISIS CENTER (CCC)
The CCC, located in Elgin, Illinois, was founded in 1975 by a group of dedicated volunteers to meet the needs of individuals and families in crisis. One week after opening, the staff encountered a battered woman. What began as frustration and a lack of options for that woman resulted in a new direction and commitment for the agency. Employees provide comprehensive services to individuals and families in crisis due to domestic violence, sexual assault, or economic/ financial difficulties. The Crisis Center is one of the oldest domestic violence shelters in the state and was instrumental in organizing both the Illinois and National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The mission of the Community Crisis Center is to provide Safety, Hope, Advocacy, Respite and Education for those impacted by crisis and violence in the Fox Valley Region and Illinois.

Services include a 24-hour crisis hotline and information and referral; emergency temporary shelter for 40 women and children who are homeless due to domestic violence or financial crisis; individual and group counseling; medical, legal and welfare advocacy; financial assistance to abate homelessness; emergency food pantry; batterers' intervention program; transitional living program; a distinct children's program; and community education. The CCC service area includes northern Kane County from St. Charles to the northern edge of the county and far northwest suburban Cook County; there are no service area limits for domestic violence victims.

SAVE THE DATE - CCC 2016 Open - Thursday, September 8 - 12:30 Shotgun Start
Makray Memorial Golf Course, Barrington, IL

K.R. Miller Contractors, Inc has been the host of the K.R. Miller Golf Open since 2000. All proceeds from our golf outing have benefited the Community Crisis Center in Elgin, Illinois. This worthwhile organization aids those in need due to various hardships, including domestic violence. K.R. Miller Contractors, Inc. has partnered with and supported the Elgin Community Crisis Center since 1991. For more information about the Community Crisis Center, click here.
Here's how you can help...

Want to volunteer? Our volunteers include individuals and groups who come to us with a range of experiences and motivations. We offer a variety of direct and indirect volunteer positions and work to match the skills and interests of the volunteer with the needs of the agency and our clients. Some volunteer positions, including all direct service positions, require screening, training and one or more interview(s) with the supervising staff member.

Want to work with CCC with a group or organization? Service organizations, Scout Troops, co-workers, schools, and churches are often interested in volunteering with us, either as a one-time experience or on an ongoing basis. An example of a one-time project would be a group of employees from a local corporation that spent a day working with CCC's Facility Manager re-organizing the shelter kitchen and sorting a huge winter coat donation. An example of an on-going service project would be a local church group that provides a fully prepared dinner for the shelter residents every 3 months. Teachers and students from area school districts and colleges are often interested in service learning opportunities. CCC's Volunteer Coordinator can work with individuals and small groups to link their service experiences here at the CCC with the learning objectives of a particular class. College and graduate school faculty members and students who are exploring formal internship opportunities should contact the Director of Client Services at 847-742-4088 x111.

BRING SOMETHING ON SUNDAYS
NON-PERISHABLE FOOD ITEMS

We are sharing God's abundance with our neighbors...!
Something new as part of our weekly worship will be to include an offering of non-perishable food and personal care items. So please bring something each week, and the children in our service will gather them up so the bounty can be taken to Neighborhood Food Pantries and Community Crisis Center.

Needed: Oatmeal; tuna; whole wheat pasta; Mac & Cheese; canned veggies; baby food; toothbrushes; toothpaste; shampoo; toilet paper; paper towels (DO NOT NEED peanut butter or cranberry sauce - US Gov. provided)

If you forget to bring something on Sunday, we also have an ongoing monetary collection basket that will be in the Parish Hall each Sunday during our Fellowship Hour. Our goal is $650 which will buy the Food Pantry 4000 pounds of food! We currently have about $50 collected.
