INTERIM PASTOR DAVID'S MESSAGE
GOOD FRIENDS

I have said several times in the past few months that these two years of ministry with you have been among the best in my 50 years of "ministry". I thank God for bringing me here to Little Home Church and for the good "fit" between church and pastor. You are a great Little Home Church with significant potential for growth both spiritual and numerical.

I believe the key to a fulfilling future for you is the degree of commitment of those who are part of the LHC family. It's not just about more members; it's about growing disciples. I also encourage you to continue your development of small groups where you can grow in fellowship and spirit. I believe you recognize that there is a "mission field" out in the world where you can engage people who are hungry for spiritual growth, for belonging to a community, who want to make a difference by serving others. Finding their needs that match your gifts and your desire to serve will bring you great joy.

As I leave I am aware of others before me who have helped lead Gods' people. I am certainly no Rev. Martin Luther King and definitely no Moses, but I can say with them, that I won't get to go to your "promised land" with you. That's Pastor Richard's job! You have grown in vitality, developed vibrant and vital ministries, stabilized your finances, grown in size and engaged the world of differences and people with needs. You are ready to revision and move forward!

As I leave I hope to say good-bye to each of you in some way and close this chapter of your life and my ministry. As an Interim Pastor I am not permitted to come back, visit or continue to be a part of your lives. This is for a good reason: so that you can get connected with Pastor Richard with no distractions. But don't think for a minute that I won't think of you and miss you. You will continue to be in my prayers.

I am not sure what God has in mind for me next, but I know it will include being with family. May God continue to bless and guide you as you continue to seek the path God has for you of growing disciples and transforming the world.

With great love,

NEW PASTOR UPDATE
LOOKING FORWARD TO A JULY 1 START DATE

Reverend Richard Malmberg, our new pastor, will be relocating from Massachusetts to Illinois later this month and starting his new position at Little Home Church on Friday, July 1. Following his 'candidating' sermon at LHC on Sunday, April 24, the congregation voted to extend a call to Rev. Richard and he accepted that call. For the time being, he and his wife, Jane will be residing on the west side of St. Charles. Richard is anxious to get started and will preach his first sermon as our pastor on Sunday, July 3. Also, a formal installation ceremony and welcome reception will be scheduled for a time later in the season. We all look forward to welcoming Rev. Malmberg and his family into the life of our church and are very pleased to support him as our new spiritual leader.

For the summer, as is our tradition, we will need soloists, and small ensembles to prepare some musical offerings for our worship services. Be sure to contact me if you're interested.

THANK YOU to everyone who SET UP...DUG
PLANTS...SOLD PLANTS...BOUGHT PLANTS...BAKED GOODIES...HUNG OUT...and CLEANED UP...for this year's Little Home Church Plant Sale. Wonderfully, the weather was grand and the event raised $1,800.00 for our Outreach Ministry budget. Also, there are plenty of ideas being considered to build on this success for next season.

WORSHIP & SPIRITUAL GROWTH
FLOWERS & FELLOWSHIP

Summer is quickly approaching and our lives will soon be busy (if they aren't already) with graduation celebrations, weddings, vacations, summer camps for the kids, sports activities, barbecues, and those endless outdoor home projects, etc. Traditionally, church life in the summer months is simple and laid back. Not much happens.

Well that is not the case for us at Little Home Church! Take note of all the opportunities to gather in worship, work, and play listed in this newsletter or posted on our website. Connecting with each other forges bonds of relationship with each other and God. It is almost like spiritual development without even knowing it is happening.

Relationships, spiritual and otherwise, can happen on many different levels and in the simplest of ways. Attending worship is one way to make a connection. Active participation as a pulpit associate or usher takes it that next step. And we share important parts of our lives when we bring our joys and concerns to the congregation for prayer or make a special dedication for the altar flowers.

Preparing coffee hour is another way to relate to other church members and visitors. How many times does the Bible relate stories of connecting folks with food? Not many folks grab coffee and a cookie and head out the door. Rather they stop and thank the host/hostess and chat with others even for a brief time. They connect with one another.

Consider sharing a part of yourself and see what connections you can make this summer!

God Bless,
Susi Winquist

FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES
'TRUMBO' - JUNE 10 AT 7 PM

In 1947, Dalton Trumbo (Bryan Cranston) was Hollywood's top screenwriter until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs. TRUMBO (directed by Jay Roach) recounts how Dalton used words and wit to win two Academy Awards and expose the absurdity and injustice under the blacklist, which entangled everyone from gossip columnist Hedda Hopper (Helen Mirren) to John Wayne, Kirk Douglas and Otto Preminger. The film also stars Diane Lane, John Goodman, Louis C.K. and Elle Fanning.

George Washington's Secret Six: The Spy Ring That Saved the American Revolution by Brian Kilmeade

When General George Washington beat a hasty retreat from New York City in August 1776, many thought the American Revolution might soon be over. Instead, Washington rallied--thanks in large part to a little-known, top-secret group called the Culper Spy Ring. Washington realized that he couldn't beat the British with military might, so he recruited a sophisticated and deeply secretive intelligence network to infiltrate New York. So carefully guarded were the members' identities that one spy's name was not uncovered until the twentieth century, and one remains unknown today. But by now, historians have discovered enough information about the ring's activities to piece together evidence that these six individuals turned the tide of the war. Here, these spies finally take their place among the pantheon of heroes of the American Revolution

And don't forget, at our meeting on June 7 we will be discussing Grandmothers Counsel the World by Carole Schaeffer

FOX VALLEY ASSOCIATION
SPRING MEETING UPDATE

The Fox Valley Association's (FVA) annual meeting was held at the Congregational Church of Algonquin on April 23, 2016, with Pastor David, Karen Kaluzsa, Maureen O'Donnell and Judy Hopkins representing the Little Home Church. The meeting was divided into three sections, beginning with opening worship accompanied by rousing Dixieland music, followed by the business meeting and election of new officers, and concluding with a keynote speaker.

Reports were given by the Justice & Witness, Ministry, and Nominating Committees, and a resolution was made on reducing gun violence. Invitations were extended to upcoming UCC events including a women's retreat, a mission trip, a national youth event, and webinars on climate change, mental health and endowment planning.

The Keynote Speaker was Jasmin Taylor, the "Digital Pastor" at Trinity UCC in Chicago. Pastor Taylor described her successful use of social media to publicize events and attract members' participation at Trinity. She shared numerous strategies and useful tips, many of which she has posted on FVA's web site.

Following the meeting we adjourned for lunch, giving us the opportunity to meet delegates from the 44 other FVA churches. Representing LHC at the meeting provided a thoroughly enjoyable, instant familiarization with the activities of the larger UCC church.

FROM THE MODERATOR
A COAT OF MANY COLORS

As I near the end of my tenure as your Moderator, I'd like to thank you all for the wonderful gift of a coat of many colors...much like Joseph's of Biblical fame. Now, you may not see the coat on me because it's magical, or maybe because it's only in my perception (much like the Emperor's new clothes fairy tale). Now, way back in history, most coats rarely had any color at all; after all dye was very expensive. So, most coats were monochromatic, un-bleached wool or cotton, and drab to say the least. But my coat has many colors!

And what are the colors, and what do they mean? In the broadest and most meaningful sense, our Open and Affirming logo, and my coat, both have the primary colors of the rainbow, as our church welcomes all of God's children into His house, and accepts all of His children's gifts and offerings with equal love. Viewing these colors at a more "down to earth" level, the green could just as well represent our Gardeners whose handiwork we see from the windows by the pews, maybe the blue is for the blue skies outside above our courtyard surrounded by our lovingly cared for buildings, maybe purple is for the passion that we put into serving others through outreach, evangelism and education, and maybe the yellow (gold), is for our choir, and so on. There are so many colors in God's rainbow, and so many of you who give the color of your spirit to your gifts. As I've spent this last year working with many of you, I've slowly started assimilating some of your colors.

During this last year, I've come to know much, much more about our church, and most importantly I've come to know and genuinely appreciate YOU the members of our congregation. I've been fortunate and blessed that so many of you have shared with me your hopes and aspirations for our church; and yes my heart has listened to your fears and doubts as well, as I too have many of the same hopes and fears.

As a member of the Search and Call committee, I was exceptionally mindful to keep these hopes and fears foremost in my mind as the committee embarked upon an at times trying journey. And l was truly blessed to follow this path with six exceptional, like-minded, and devoted members of our congregation.

Now, you may have seen depictions of Joseph's coat as being one of vertical stripes. That's good because as you grow, you can just open up the back seam of the coat and insert another stripe, and as I grow (i.e. gain weight), I'll need a bigger coat!  So too, our church will take on new colors as we reach out into the diverse community around us. The colors won't be the drab mono-chromatics of decades ago. They will be bright colors, pastels, and maybe even colors our eyes have never seen.

I am so VERY THANKFUL for this last year and the coat of many colors that the congregation has gifted me with, and I look forward to growing with you...and adding more colors to my coat as God wills it.

Peace,
Alex Kentfield, Moderator
