A CALL EXTENDED...A CALL ACCEPTED

The Search & Call Committee is very pleased to announce that Reverend Richard Malmberg has accepted the offered position of sitting pastor of the Little Home Church by the Wayside.

Following the delivery of his 'candidating' sermon on April 24, 2016, while he and his wife, Jane had been shown to a quiet area in an adjacent building, the congregation voted overwhelmingly to accept the unanimous recommendation of the Council and extend the offer of pastorship to Reverend Malmberg.

His acceptance brings to a joyous conclusion a period of almost two years since our previous pastor retired, including approximately one year during which the S&C Committee studied the profiles of over 50 candidates who were interested in serving LHC. Selecting from this large candidate group, S&C recommended only Richard Malmberg to the Council. The Malmbergs are preparing to relocate from West Newton, MA by July. Soon thereafter our new pastor will assume his pastoral duties with LHC.

We welcome Pastor Malmberg, his wife, Jane, and when they are in residence, their sons Oscar and Max. The Council's acceptance of S&C's recommendation together with the congregation's election of the candidate bring to an official close the duties of the Committee.

TO ALL THE SAINTS IN WAYNE AT LITTLE HOME CHURCH

I am still drifting on the euphoria of 'candidating' Sunday. It was wonderful to meet so many of you. I am deeply grateful for the warm kindness & hospitality you showed us. I was so glad that Jane, Max and Oscar could meet some of you and see Little Home Church. I have a growing sense of what a special place and what special people are serving God and their neighbors there. I am eager to get there and dig in with all of you.

Until then, I pray as the Apostle did in his letter to the Church in Ephesus: "so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith-that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen." (Ephesians 3:17-20)

I look forward to being with you again soon.
Yours in Christ, Richard

INTERIM PASTOR DAVID'S MESSAGE
WRITING A NEW CHAPTER

Our word Bible comes from the Latin "biblia" meaning "little books" which is the wonderful word of God coming to us with divine inspiration for over 5,000 years. Just as the Bible has many books representing different: eras; cultural contexts; witnesses to God's truth; so too Little Home Church over its 145 years has had many chapters. LHC has experienced times of plenty and times of want, societal changes and internal challenges. We have experienced wonderful church events and have been touched by many faith experiences.

Each era in the life of LHC can be marked by a pastoral leader. Folks often identify the time period when Pastor so and so was the minister. Now Little Home Church by the Wayside embarks on a new venture with Rev. Richard Malmberg as Pastor. Another chapter in the faith story of LHC is being written. And just as the hand of God is evident in every book in the Bible so we can see the Holy Spirit throughout the history of Little Home Church and in the present call of Richard as Pastor.

Different ones of us have different favorites in the Bible. Some of us like the comfort of the Psalms, others are drawn to the powerful justice parables found in the gospel of Luke. We are in awe at the Genesis story of beginnings and we learn so much about being church from Paul's letters to the churches. Analogously, Little Home Church has had years, events, Pastors and church members that are our favorites or our least favorite. Yet, just as all the books of the Bible make it the full Word of God; all the epochs of LHC history make it the full, rich, testament to God's work in this world. We can count on the Spirit of God to be present in every time of church life.

Our Little Home Church future is not written. There are whole chapters we have no clue about; some we can make educated guesses about. But all the words written about LHC that are worthy knowing are those that are guided by the Spirit. I firmly believe that it is the faithfulness of the church members who have gone before us and the faith that we entrust to our God for guidance that will show us the way in this new time.

MAY MUSIC

"I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see life in terms of music." Albert Einstein

April was a great month for music at LHC! On April 3rd we had "the band" for our service in the Parish Hall, on the 17th Richard Evans joined us on cello, and we worked hard on several pieces of music for the 24th to welcome our new minister, Rev. Richard Malmberg.

Here's what we've got planned for May:

May 1 - Communion As We Gather At Your Table by Lloyd Larson
May 8 - Mother's Day - Above All Else, by Joel Raney; A Home of Grace, by Joseph M. Martin
May 15 - Pentecost - (Cello)Holy Spirit, Living Breath of God, by Lloyd Larson
May 22 - To be announced
May 29 - Memorial Day Weekend - To be announced

The Choir will present The Gospel Mass this Fall rather than the previously scheduled May 22 date, so we can accommodate our fellow churches that will be joining us.

Thanks again for all your kind words of encouragement and wonderful support.

COMMUNITY BLOOD DRIVE - MAY 2

Our Spring Blood Drive is right around the corner and scheduled for Monday, May 2, from 3 to 7 pm. Blood donations are needed every day of the year to have enough blood to supply to those in need of transfusions. More than 500 blood donations are needed daily to save patient lives. Being a blood donor helps to sustain lives all around the world. Heartland Blood Centers provides blood to hospitals not only within the greater Chicago land area but across the nation. The average adult body stores a little more than a pint of blood to every 25 pounds. The entire process for donating 1 pint of whole blood only takes about 45 minutes.

Please consider saving a life today! You can schedule your donation by clicking here or call or email Lori in the Church Office.

FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES
'SUFFRAGETTE' - MAY 13 AT 7 PM

Our selection for May is called "Suffragette" released last fall. It tells the story of the growing suffragette movement in early 20th century Britain and how it forever changes the life of working wife and mother, Maud Watts and her co-workers. These women were the hard working women who had seen peaceful protests achieve nothing. Radicalized and turning to violence to violence as at the only route to change, they were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality - their jobs, their homes, their children and their lives. The story is both heart-breaking and inspirational.

Join the group if you'd like at 5:30 pm for dinner at O'Hare's Irish Pub located at Army Trail and Rt. 59. They would love to have you!

A BOOK & A PRAYER BOOK CLUB
TUESDAY, JUNE 7, 7 PM

Grandmothers Counsel the World by Carole Schaeffer

In some Native American societies, tribal leaders consulted a council of grandmothers before making any major decisions that would affect the whole community. What if we consulted our wise women elders about the problems facing our global community today? This book presents the insights and guidance of thirteen indigenous grandmothers from five continents, many of whom are living legends among their own peoples. The Grandmothers offer wisdom on such timely issues as nurturing our families; cultivating physical and mental health; and confronting violence, war, and poverty. Also included are the reflections of Western women elders, including Alice Walker, Gloria Steinem, Helena Norberg-Hodge, and Carol Moseley Brown.

And don't forget, our meeting on May 3, we will be discussing Mama Maggie by Martin Makary and Ellen Vaughn

FROM THE MODERATOR
TURTLE-ISMS

Recently much has been written and discussed about our pastoral candidate, now officially our new called Pastor. During this long and involved search process, I followed procedure to the letter, and discussed the specifics of our candidates' resumes and committee deliberations with nobody (no, not even my beloved wife), with one exception: Timothy Turtle. Now some of you may know that our family has had box turtles as pets for several generations. As turtles live very long, they are one of the few pets that can be inherited. God gives each creature a form of intelligence, often of a kind that we humans overlook entirely. Now Timothy has been around a while and has seen and read a lot. As I've been privileged to be his steward of many years, he gladly shares with me his insight into our human world.

We have all heard the typical turtle-isms of: "you can only go forward, not backward" (ever see a turtle going backwards?), and in going forward, you have to "stick your neck out" (even turtles know that progress entails risk), "you learn nothing hiding in your shell" in the familiar darkness, (turtles spend about half of their time outside their shells), and sometimes you just have to chill out, pick out a nice log near a pond and - one of Timothy's favorites - "soak in God's sunshine until the Spirit tells you to move on" (we've all seen turtles, especially pond turtles, just sitting there meditating in the sunshine).

As I've shared some of the trials and tribulations of our recently concluded search with Timothy, he has given me wise counsel. After looking at the Facebook post of our Sunday 'candidating' sermon and celebration afterwards, he said: "yeh, everyone's talking about the new pastor. What about the new congregation?" As Timothy explained it, he liked eating crickets well enough, but a more learned turtle turned him on to garden worms and rotten bananas and tomatoes, now favorites of his. Likewise,on our journey as a congregation, our interim Pastor David has opened us up to new ideas, new ways of serving and new expressions of worship. We haven't tossed out all of the old, we've just expanded our tastes. We have chosen a new pastor to lead us, and just as importantly he has chosen a congregation willing to try new things, to stick their neck out a bit, get out of their comforting shell and move forward. Our congregation has new members, and just as importantly, older members with a new spirit. And as we move forward, not all things will go as we expect. Timothy told me about rolling over on his back once as a youngster. He thought that he was going to die. As his older brothers and sisters helped right him, he told them about the things flying up in the air that he had never seen before. They told him that they heard they were called birds. Timothy insisted that they were angels, and that he had a new purpose in life after getting back on his feet. He told me this story after I shared with him a period where the search and call committee had received no new candidate resumes for several weeks. We thought that the well was dry and that the committee was going to die on the vine. A week later, the pastoral profile of our newly called pastor landed in our inbox. After telling Timothy about the celebration Sunday, he offered to share one of his juiciest worms with me. I declined, but it's the thought that counts. And as we heard from Pastor Richard on Sunday, sharing is good.

Amen! Alex Kentfield, Moderator
