PASTORSEARCH
SEARCH AND CALL
SEARCH...COMING CLOSER TO CALL!

It is with much excitement and joy that the Search and Call Committee (S&C) announces that we have selected a candidate to become the next pastor for LHC! He is Reverend Richard Malmberg, a UCC pastor most recently serving The Second Church in Newton, in West Newton, MA. Richard was ordained by the United Church of Christ in 1993. He has served 3 churches, with his previous call lasting 17 years. Richard is married to Jane, a librarian. They enjoy cooking, reading, music, films, and travel. They have two college-aged sons, Max and Oscar, and a dog, Fletcher, a lab-border collie mix.

Our team was favorably impressed by Reverend Malmberg's resume and initial SKYPE interview. Richard is committed to building relationships. During his most recent pastorate in Massachusetts, he was active in the local UCC conference, the wider church and in several interfaith organizations. Richard holds true to Biblical values while remaining open to the lives we are living. He is ready to help us share what we have and discern where God is calling the Little Home Church.

Richard came to Illinois in February for a second interview, sermon, visit to the church and environs, and several meals with the S&C team. We found him to be a great conversationalist, well versed in history and current events. Richard is widely travelled and well read. He is a good listener, interested in other perspectives and points of view.

After the visit, S&C consulted his references, who said he is, "caring, passionate, scholarly, eloquent, intellectually and spiritually strong, warm, engaging, friendly, interesting," and a "STRONG supporter" of the power of music in services. We consulted as a team and made a unanimous decision to invite Richard to be our next pastor. He accepted our invitation and discussed and agreed upon the financial package with the LHC Personnel Committee.

S&C requested a special meeting of the LHC Church Council on March 22. The Council was presented with a one-page bio about Reverend Malmberg and advised of our unanimous decision. After questions and discussion, the Council unanimously affirmed our invitation to Reverend Malmberg.

On April 24, 2016, Reverend Malmberg will preach a "Candidating Sermon" at LHC. Immediately after worship, all members in attendance will be asked to vote upon the council's recommendation to issue a "call" to Richard Malmberg. If the majority concurs, a call is extended. Reverend Malmberg then has the opportunity to accept the call and become our next pastor.

The S&C team is hopeful and enthusiastic about calling Reverend Malmberg. We hope you will be in attendance on April 24. In the meantime, if you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact one of us. In addition, a copy of the one-page bio about Reverend Malmberg is available in the church office. We look forward to seeing you on April 24!

PASTOR'S MESSAGE
BREAKFAST WITH JESUS

"Jesus said to them, 'Come and have breakfast" (John 21:12a)

Can you imagine having coffee and eggs with Jesus or meeting him at Starbucks? Go no further than Little Home Church. On Sunday, April 3, 9:30 am we are having "Breakfast with Jesus"! A breakfast communion meal will be served during worship (in Parish Hall) and you can count on Jesus being present.

In this amazing story in our Bible, the resurrected Jesus appears to his disciples and friends. His dejected disciples are out fishing and coming up empty handed. Jesus shows up standing on the lake shore and tells them to cast their nets on the other side of the boat. They do, and catch more fish than they can handle.

That's our church you know. Remembering the 'good old days' of filled pews, we try to resurrect old programs. But we know better. The world has changed and there are more non-religious people in the U.S. than Christians. The waters are different and we're not always sure how to navigate them.

Enter Jesus. When we ask him, call on him and listen to him, we begin to get a picture, a direction of who the church is, where we need to go and who we need to 'catch'. This exciting month of April, Eastertide, we anticipate: a New Member's Class; Theology on Tap (4/10); spring fix-up and clean-up with Men of LHC and Gardening Angels (4/9); three Outreach Mission Moments on Sunday mornings; and weekly Playdates with children and parents.

We are listening to Jesus' invitation to be with him, to try the other side of the boat to catch fish, maybe even make a few waves. When Jesus is with us at breakfast or any time, our lives are better and our Little Home Church goes forward toward a new horizon.

Thanks to all of the musicians who shared their time and talents during our Lent and Easter Sunday services. Having Richard Evans on cello with us on Good Friday was very meaningful and The Choir in combination with The Brass Quintet was glorious on Easter. Thanks to Joe Krantz for organizing the brass!

Do not miss this Sunday when the choir sings three anthems
with our band for the service.

SPRING IS IN THE AIR...

EASTER FLOWERS
I want to extend a big thank you to all who purchased a lily, daffodil or geranium plant for our Easter Service. As always, flowers lend a very festive air of celebration. Our Sanctuary looked and smelled wonderful! And, please know that your donations help support our mission efforts so thank you as well on behalf of our Outreach Ministry. We raised $375!

ALTAR FLOWERS AND FELLOWSHIP COFFEE HOUR

Speaking of flowers. Now that we are seeing Spring flowers poking up after their winter's nap, it is a great time to think about volunteering to provide flowers for a Sunday's Worship Service. You will find the sign-up sheet on the bulletin board located at the entrance into Parish Hall. Incidentally, the Fellowship sign-up sheet can be found right next to the Flower Chart. While you ponder a day to provide Flowers you might want to volunteer to bring some goodies for our Fellowship Coffee Hour.

NURSERY

Our childcare provider Sherry, will be unavailable April 3, May 1 and May 8 (Mother's Day). I am looking for an adult or teenager to provide coverage. Please consider volunteering to sit with the little ones during Worship on any of those days. Plan to arrive by 9:15 am to prepare to greet the little ones and their parents. Contact me or Lori in the Church Office with any questions and if you can help with this Ministry of Care.

Shalom,

FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES
'SPOTLIGHT' - APRIL 8 AT 7 PM

Our movie group is excited to show this year's Academy Award winner for Best Picture...SPOTLIGHT. The movie tells the riveting true story of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Boston Globe investigation that would rock the city and cause a crisis in one of the world's oldest and most trusted institutions. When the newspaper's tenacious "Spotlight" team of reporters delves into allegations of abuse in the Catholic Church, their year-long investigation uncovers a decades-long cover-up at the highest levels of Boston's religious, legal, and government establishment, touching off a wave of revelations around the world. SPOTLIGHT is a tense investigative dramatic-thriller, tracing the steps to one of the biggest cover-ups in modern times.

Join the group if you'd like at 5:30 pm for dinner at O'Hare's Irish Pub located at Army Trail and Rt. 59. They would love to have you!

Mama Maggie by Martin Makary and Ellen Vaughn

From marketing maven to angel of the garbage district-the inspiring authorized biography of Maggie Gobran, the "Mother Teresa of Egypt."
Since 1997, Maggie Gobran and her organization Stephen's Children have been changing lives in Cairo's notorious zabala, or garbage slums. Her innovative, transformational work has garnered worldwide fame and multiple Nobel Prize nominations, but her full story has remained untold-until now.

Bestselling authors Martin Makary and Ellen Vaughn chronicle Mama Maggie's surprising pilgrimage from privileged child to stylish businesswoman to college professor pondering God's call to change. She answered that call by becoming the modest figure in white who daily navigates piles of stinking trash, bringing hope to the poorest of the poor. Smart an

FROM THE MODERATOR
CAN WE AUTO-CORRECT HUMANITY?
Can We Auto-Correct Humanity?
Can We Auto-Correct Humanity?

During this Lenten season, many of us attended the two catered Lenten Suppers. If you missed them, both the food for the body and the soul were great! We watched video presentations given by Henri Nouwen. We learned a lot about him, and I will dig up one of his books (probably The Wounded Healer first) as soon as I can. Nouwen's message was very similar to that of one of my all-time favorite rap singers, Prince Ea. Yes, in addition to classical music and Gregorian chant, I listen to rap! A link to one of Prince Ea's better pieces is embedded here. Don't worry, there's no vulgar language or violence-infused lyrics in his music, so it's suitable for both young and "elder" ears. OMG! You may even like it! LOL!

Back to Nouwen. One of Nouwen's touch-points or themes was "busy, busy, busy." We're all so busy. We have no time for reflective solitude; in fact we fear solitude rather than embrace the gifts it can give. By the way, the medical profession has noted that many folks suffer from anxiety if they don't have their smart phones with them at all times and if they are not getting or sending messages, or are not being "liked" on Facebook, or are not being "tagged" in posted photos and thus have incomplete timelines. There is no "down time." We make ourselves busy even when we have nothing positively constructive to do! Nouwen went on, rather eloquently, to show constructive solitude actually morphs into creation of (meaningful) community, and eventually into a true caring self as part of a caring community. Our dinner last night covered the solitude part of the journey as mentioned. So if you missed that, do yourself and the spirit within you a favor and try to make the next session, where we'll pick up where we left off. Nouwen won't let you down, I promise!

Now, back to Prince Ea again. His message, couched in today's vernacular of hip-hop and rap, is remarkably similar to Nouwen's. It's rather fast, as is all rap music, so you may want to listen to it more than once. In essence he's saying that we have so many ways, technically, to communicate, but in the end, it's not a real human-to-human interaction: we communicate ever faster and ever more conveniently through the now highly synchronized media of text, icons, images, and impersonal voicemail and voice messaging...but not dialogue and certainly not spirit. In a way, it's ironic that Prince Ea has had to resort to using the very media that he castigates, to get his message across. But if he would have written this message, who would have read it? Certainly not his intended audience!

Christ too, of course, knew this dynamic. He did not preach from within the confines of the Temple, the then accepted place to impart the Word of God, anywhere near as much as he preached from the bondless confines of crowds. He took the Word to the people. How often can't we get a song or melody out of our heads? Just as I envisioned Christ on his surfboard in earlier comments, I can envision Christ singing with and to the multitudes, maybe even in rap music rhyme and meter, which of course is easy to remember. The message stays with you, as The Spirit intended.

Peace,

Alex Kentfield, Moderator   Connect with Alex
