Pastor's message...
Add a little patience
to our Advent!

Wagrain, Austria is a resort town in the Alps where people escape the busyness of Vienna and the fast pace of Salzburg to ski the slopes, breathe the alpine air and get a good night's sleep. But every October, Wagrain hosts the Annual Conference of the Society for the Deceleration of Time which thousands attend. This Austrian group is a leader in the "slow movement" around the globe that has numerous clubs, groups, societies, all who encourage folks to slow down. (In Praise of Slowness, Carl Honore)

Advent is a season of expectations, of waiting and let's be honest, it's also a season of busyness at a frenetic level. It's a high pitched wonderfully exciting season. No wonder we often experience a let down on December 26!

Instead could we slow down just a little in order to experience the 'reason for the season'? Could we add a little patience to our Advent waiting? Could we take time every day to:

Call a family member or friend and tell them we love them
or...
Take extra time being with a customer, client or co-worker
or...
Read the daily UCC Advent Devotional booklet, "Wonder"
or...
Pray?

You get the picture, whatever we can do to slow ourselves down for a little bit each day.

The world is hard enough to navigate with all its violence, hatred, anger, fear and hunger, homelessness, disease, calamities, etc. So why not, in this season of expectation, this season of Hope, Peace, Love, Joy, this season of Christ's birth, of Christmas...why not slow things down, just a little. Maybe we'll slow down enough to hear our own heart beat as it longs for some rest. And maybe we'll be quiet for just a moment in order to experience the wonder of this season, this time when we realize that God came down to us bringing love.

May this Advent season truly be a blessing for you,

Pastor David

Stewardship

Challenge Pledge
Let's grow the vine...
We need the support of all Members of Little Home Church to make our Challenge Pledge a success. It is our collective responsibility to match the $15,000.00 that was asked of our leadership team; to do this we need broad participation. Please make an incremental gift to the Church in this season of thanksgiving and joy by a check marked 'challenge' or via our credit card process online.

2016 Stewardship Campaign
New Beginnings...fast start
Our 2016 Stewardship Campaign is off to a fast start with 56 pledges totaling more than $146,000 in our first few weeks. The results are very positive with 60% of pledges either increased or new; thank you to those who have pledged and a word of reminder to those who have not. We are on track for a record year in pledges..."God is doing a new thing, do you not perceive it?"

Thank you to all...!

Christmas Food Baskets
LHC has committed to providing 45 baskets for Neighborhood Food Pantries. There is a 'shopping list' of items required for each basket and there is a sign-up sheet in the Parish Hall. The baskets are due Saturday, December 19 and should be dropped off at Resurrection Church (corner of Army Trail Road and Rt. 59) between 7:30 and 9 am that day.

The Giving Tree
It's up and ready to go in the Parish Hall. We once again partnered with Wayne Township to help make Christmas a little brighter for some of their needy families and seniors. It's easy: Take a tag; write your name down; and purchase your gift. All WRAPPED gifts are due back to church by Sunday, December 13. Be sure to attach the tag to your gift.

Playdate
This group has grown in popularity for moms, kids, and caregivers gathering on Monday mornings 9-11 am. In
November we had a visit from the Fire Department where the children learned that firemen are our helpers
and to not be afraid. They also got to climb on the fire trucks and left with their very own fire helmets. All are welcome and visitors are open to participating as much or as little time as they can.If anyone would like Playdate flyers to email or post in youcommunity, or has an idea for a special visit from someone please emaiValeri Baldwin or Nancy Alex.

Welcome New Members
Sunday, Nov. 15 we welcomed three new members into our Little Home Church family...Jamie and Vanessa Kokoszka and Betty Riley. Jamie and Vanessa discovered LHC when they recently got married here in October. They live in St. Charles and we are thrilled they have decided to make LHC their church home.

Betty Riley lives in Wayne and came to us this past spring when her husband suddenly passed away. We are happy she found the comfort and warmth she needed here at LHC. Please say, 'hello' and introduce yourself next time you see them in church!

Friday Night at the Movies
Dec. 11, 7 pm

Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Join us for a heartwarming and hilarious holiday movie. Planes, Trains and Automobiles is a 1987 American comedy film written, produced and directed by John Hughes. The film stars Steve Martin as Neal Page, a high-strung marketing executive who meets Del Griffith, played by the late John Candy, an eternally optimistic, outgoing, clumsy and overly talkative shower curtain ring salesman who seems to live in a world governed by a different set of rules. They share a three day odyssey of misadventures trying to get Neal home to Chicago from New York in time for Thanksgiving with his family.

We've been meeting at 5:30 pm for dinner at O'Hares Irish Pub located on the SE corner of Army Trail Road and Rt. 59. The chef is from Northern Ireland and makes some fantastic traditional Irish food as well as American pub favorites. Join us for dinner and the movie, or just dinner, or just the movie. We'd love to have you!

Have a Little Faith by Mitch Albom

In this book Mitch Albom offers a beautifully written story of a remarkable eight-year journey between two worlds, two men, two faiths, two communities that will inspire readers everywhere. 'Have a Little Faith' is a book about a life's purpose; about losing belief and finding it again; about the divine spark inside us all. It is one man's journey, but it is everyone's story.

Moderator's thoughts...
Another look at the "Daily Grind"
There's nothing like a good breakfast to start the day! My wife, Christa, frequently reminds me of that when she notices that all too often my breakfast is just a hurried bite to ward off
breakfast.jpg
the night's hunger (think a half bowl of cold cereal and a cup of coffee). Once in a while I throw my misguided notions of a healthy breakfast (actually my excuse for efficiency, or maybe even for my laziness) to the wind and take the time to make myself a fat and cholesterol feast of bacon, eggs (sunny side up), an English muffin slathered with butter, and a cup of strong coffee. To give a nod to good health, I'll add a slice or two of fresh cantaloupe melon, when available.

Yesterday was just such a "real breakfast day," and I went to the fridge and hauled out the egg carton and opened it with eager anticipation. When throwing out the carton after removing the last three remaining eggs, which I later gleefully ate, I saw it. There was a not-so-cryptic message lurking on the inside of the carton's cover. "This is the day which the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it" Psalms 118:24.

That afternoon when shopping (eggs of course were on the shopping list), I looked at egg cartons from other suppliers, and saw that most of them also had this Psalm printed inside their cartons. What did these farmers know that I was not aware of?  Well, the farmer can do all the right things for his flock (good feed, warm and secure roost, and attentive care), but only the chicken will decide if she'll grant him an egg the next morning. Since even well-fed chickens do not lay eggs every day, the egg then is an unpredictable gift from the chicken to the farmer. Hmmm! I must have subliminally thought about this situation a bit more as I slept last night, because a few thoughts came to me this morning while eating my half bowl of cereal. Here you go!

We have several reasons to rejoice with each new day's breaking dawn besides having survived the night. First, the Lord made this day, so therefor it is holy. This day was given to us by God's grace. We did not and cannot earn this gift, and we have no idea how many such gifts we will get...only God knows that. All the same, each day is a holy treasure, and a gift. So what do we do with this gift? What can we do to show the Lord that we are at least trying to be worthy of His grace and His daily gift?

We all have lives to lead, work to do, responsibilities to fulfill, etc. etc. (i.e. the daily grind). As I go through my day, I must remind myself that not doing something bad is not the same thing as doing something good. The absence of evil is not in and of itself good, but rather just a neutral position. This brings me to a second reason to rejoice.

With each and every new day with which the Lord gifts us, we have an opportunity to show our thanks by doing something good. The good doesn't have to be an earth shattering thing either. Remember, it's often "the little things that count": a kind word, a returned favor, a phone call, a shared meal, a simple and heart-felt "thank-you". God gives us so many chances every day to please and bring comfort to others, and in doing so say "thanks" to Him for the gift of living that day. So, I will make a more determined effort to dismiss the daily grind and embrace it as the Daily Grace.

Peace,

Alex Kentfield
