Pastor's message...

Humans Together, Face to Face

It was 1949 and I was all of five years old. I came inside from playing with some friends and repeated a word I had heard, "N-----." My mother was shocked. She asked me if I knew what I was saying. I didn't. She explained how I had said a very bad thing about other people just because they had different skin color. Then she said, "Do you know that that word talks badly about your adopted grandma Abbie?" Now it was my turn to be shocked. I was horrified that I had said a hurtful thing about this woman who had become my grandmother and whom I loved. I never forgot this moment. The "N" word was a hateful stereotype but Abbie was my face-to-face grandma.

I was walking home after school from the bus stop in Tokyo Japan, 1952, and as I rounded the corner a block from home, some Japanese boys across the street, about 75 feet away, began yelling at me and throwing rocks. I was scared but not for long as some of other Japanese boys I had played 'basuballru' with came to my rescue. They surrounded me and spoke strongly to the other boys throwing the rocks who then disappeared. The difference between the boys who hated Americans and the boys who had become my baseball buddies was face-to-face contact.

Fast-forward to 2010 when I heard on the news that pastor Terry Jones of Gainesville, Florida was threatening to burn a Koran, the Muslim holy book. I was horrified not only at the political ramifications, but also at the hateful angry words that spewed forth from his mouth. I couldn't understand his belief that all Muslims are to be hated. I decided to try and do something about it and, as Senior Pastor of United Protestant Church in Grayslake, I proposed that we have a dialogue between our church and a Muslim mosque in Zion, IL. In 2011 we had a wonderful series of conversations and educational sessions between our two peoples. It opened the eyes and the hearts of many of us from both faiths. To this day some of the members of the mosque volunteer regularly at the church's PADS site for the homeless. The women's groups of both faiths continue to interact and share projects. Face-to-face contacts made a world of difference.

Today our world is still troubled by distrust, fear and hatred that, in part, comes from the lack of face-to-face contact between people who are different from one another. Our Little Home Church Council and I have decided to offer a Christian-Muslim dialogue to our church with the mosque in Glen Ellyn. On Saturday, September 26, we are invited to an evening of education, observing their worship service and eating together. On Sunday, October 25 we are inviting members of their mosque to come to our worship service, join us in discussion and share a meal.

Face-to-face opportunities to engage in dialogue and understanding can help make our world a better place, one where God's peace may thrive.

Pastor David

Moderator's update...

Who are we really? How do we see ourselves? How do others see us? How does God see us? Which of these two pictures is really me? Both obviously. One was taken in 2000 while I was
still just a cog in a very large corporate wheel.
The other was taken about ten years later when I realized that I had the time to be a better full-time husband and help-mate, a more helpful and understanding father, and a doting grandparent. And yes, note the genuine smile on my face. I'm not yet brave enough to post a really current photo (like this year!), but it's coming, believe me. Besides most of you know what I look like anyway, so it's "no big deal."

When I look around our congregation on any given Sunday morning, I see younger folks in some of the pews and many others just as young in spirit in many other pews. In the grand scheme of things, in the measure of God's Eternity, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 or more years are totally inconsequential. When I hear stories of genuinely old people, 100+ years and counting, they all have one thing in common, they are active, they are still busy giving and serving.

Although Christ calls us to eternal life, He also gives us what we need to make the most of life here on Earth. Physicians, social scientists, statisticians, and people in general are well-aware that people who actively give, who remain concerned and focused on the needs of others, are happy with themselves and with life in general. They have a purpose; their purpose is to try to carry out God's purpose for them. It is indisputable, statistically, that happy, fulfilled people usually live longer and usually live a healthier life. Yeah, I know about the 106 year old lady in the assisted living home who claims that her longevity is due to the shot of scotch that she drinks daily. But did she tell you that she shares a sip now and then with the young (95 year old) gal down the hall, and that together they both knit baby clothes for poor mothers and are foster grandmothers in their inter-generational facility?

So, where is this going? Yes, you can start yet another new diet or exercise regimen to improve your health. Or you can take more or different pills, and change doctors while you're at it. But you can also add to your "Get Well, Be Well" tool box, the life giving tonic of service to others. Giving and doing for others brings a smile to our face and warms our hearts. Your body sheds its pains and your soul its cares in the moment that you smile in sharing joy with others.

Peace,

Alex Kentfield

Ministry news...

Stewardship Update
As Stewardship Ministry Chair, I am pleased to report that our pledges for 2015 are a record for both number of pledges (70); and total pledge income of $170,000.00. However, we still face a deficit for the year and are making special efforts to close this gap. Letters have been sent to non-pledging members asking for their financial support; and soon a new initiative will be undertaken to challenge the Congregation to provide additional support to Little Home Church. The members of our Church are blessed with resources and have proven to be very generous...I ask that this generosity continues when called to participate in the efforts of the Stewardship Ministry.

Peace be with you,

Bob Kaska

Our first Shrimp Boil was a great success! We had approximately 100 attendees who enjoyed Gulf Coast shrimp caught fresh that morning, along with corn on the cob and assorted side dishes! Thank you to the cast of thousands who helped pull this together, along with those who attended. We raised approximately $1,500 for both Back Bay Mission in Biloxi, Mississippi as well as for our Men of LHC mission projects.

Sunday, September 13
We will organize an Outdoor Worship Service at Pratts Wayne Woods. Join us at 9:30 am for our worship service, followed by the Blessing of the Motorcycles at 10:45 am. A picnic lunch will follow at 11 am. The men will cook hot dogs and burgers. We ask attendees to bring side dishes to share. At 11:30 those on motorcycles can participate in a ride to benefit the Midwest Homeless Veterans.

October 2 & 3 - A Men's Retreat at Tower Hill in beautiful Sawyer, Michigan that includes dinner at a brewery/restaurant on Lake Michigan on Friday night, sleepover in their new facility and a program that will be led by Paul Metres, a strong Christian layman, psychologist and Viet Nam Veteran. We have at least 8 members attending and we have room for more! It will be a time of discussion, fellowship, spiritual time along with planning of additional Men of LHC events. See Pastor David to sign up!

The Gardening Angels
Our next meetings:
Saturday, Sept 12 and 26, 9 to 11 am
Let's gather again in the LHC garden for fellowship and inspiration. Bring a friend...and a favorite prayer, book, poem, or just a good gardening tip to share. For those who are willing and able, we will then tend the garden.

Mission project: We are making plans to help 'Tammy's Trace'--the new house in Wheaton, IL for women veterans established by Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans. More to come on this...!

Choir & musical happenings...  Larry D.

In his novel, Jayber Crow, author Wendell Berry describes Crow's observance of hymns and worship in his small town as follows:

"I thought that some of the hymns bespoke the true religion of the place. The people didn't really want to be saints of self-deprivation and hatred of the world. They knew that the world would sooner or later deprive them of all it had given them, but still they liked it. What they came together for was to acknowledge, just by coming, their losses and failures and sorrows, their need for comfort, their faith always needing to be greater, their wish (in spite of all words and acts to the contrary) to love one another and to forgive and be forgiven, their need for one another's help and company and divine gifts, their hope (and experience) of love surpassing death, their gratitude."

As we the people at Little Home Church start up this Fall I welcome you to join us every week in hymn singing, maybe join the choir or the bells for this season - or maybe just sing the Gospel Mass or The Christmas Cantata. Whatever you want. Just come and join us. Start fresh and join in however you feel most comfortable (or maybe even a little uncomfortable.)

Dates for your calendar:

November 22 - The West Suburban Flute Orchestra
David Kelsey is bring his ensemble of 19 flutists to our church that morning

December 20 - Journey of Promises
A Christmas Cantata with full orchestra!

Thanks to the choir for welcoming Rev. Eric Dickey with such wonderful music on Sunday!!!!

CONNECTIONS: Small Group Ministry
Ever wanted to get to know church folks better than fellowship after worship? Ever wanted to grow spiritually? Do you enjoy connecting with people beyond chit chat?

You will have that opportunity this October by participating in a small group as part of our new Connections Ministry. For nine months 6 of our members have been meeting and training with Pastor David to become facilitators of three small groups for: fellowship, spiritual growth; and personal training. This month you will hear more about Connections, our new small group ministry.

If you are interested in participating in one of these new groups and learning more please contact Pastor David at 630.584.4013 or pastordavid@littlehomechurch.org

Friday Night at the Movies
September 11, 7 pm
Parish Hall

Quartet
For all of our congregation who are avid PBS fans and lovers of music, this movie is for you! Quartet is a 2012 British comedy-dram based on the play "Quartet" by Ronald Harwood, which ran in London's West End. The film is actor Dustin Hoffman's directorial debut and stars Dame Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay, Michael Gambon and Billy Connolly. Much of the supporting cast is made of actual musical stars of the past, as illustrated by the then and now photos in the credits. The movie takes place in Beecham House, a retirement home for former professional musicians, patterned after the real life Casa diRisposo per Musicisti founded by Giuseppe Verdi.

All the guests in the retirement home continue to engage in their former professions in one way or the other, including initiating young people to music. Finances threaten closure of the home but proceeds from a yearly gala concert on Verdi's birthday hold hope for continuation of the place. The director of the home is amazed at the energy displayed by the home's residents...the idea of rehearsing and playing before an audience brings life back to them leading her to the conclusion that old age and art go together.

Bible Study
Wednesday Mornings, 10 am
The group will begin to study the New Testament book of Jude. Whether you are a newbie to Bible study or have some experience you are welcome. NO preparation is necessary. The group meets in Pastor David's office and they are anxious for you to join them.

The Search & Call Committee has progressed to conducting preliminary interviews of a few candidates whose profiles and sample sermons suggest that they might serve well as the next pastor of our Little Home Church. The interview process simply permits us more information and insight into the personalities of these selected individuals. It should not be (mis-)taken as indicating we are almost finished with this complex task, whose outcome will have a long-lasting influence on the LHC community.

Our condolences...
To the family and friends of Rev. Evelyn Dickerson who passed away peacefully on August 19. Many of you may remember 'Rev. Ev' who served as our interim pastor some years ago. A memorial service is planned for Sunday, September 13, 3 pm at the First Congregational Church in Downer's Grove. Please keep her family in your prayers.

Thank you to all our service men and women.
We continue to keep SSG Greg Haben in our thoughts and thank him for his service to our country.

we noticed...

Thank you to the Ferguson family for hosting Rev. Eric Dickey at their home. Your hospitality is appreciated.

Thank you to Valeri Baldwin for the lovely umbrella stand and basket for the back of the church. It's nice to not see all the umbrellas in a heap on the floor!

We love those gardeners! Barb Braulick and her dad, George spent two hours trimming bushes and picking up sticks and branches around the church. Thank you!
