ARUN GANDHI

Grandson of Mahatma Gandhi

Preaching at Little Home Church

Sunday, July 26

9:30 am

Speaker - Author - Activist - Agent of Change

As a speaker, Arun starts from a place that he calls

'Lessons from my Grandfather.' This is always topical

and facilitates Arun in his role as a 'Peace Farmer'... planting seeds for personal and global transformation.

Arunwill include first hand experiences of the time he lived with Mahatma Gandhi and what he learnt from his grandfather during that time in the ashram in India in the years immediately preceding his assassination. These principles guide Arun Gandhi's life and his activism.

He addresses ethical leadership and building a culture of peace and nonviolence. He communicates inspirational and motivational approaches toward a goal of "be the change." Arun's Grandfather coined the phrase "be the change you wish to see in the world."

Arun's ongoing commitment is to pass on the message and principles of one of the world's greatest men, his grandfather, Mahatma Gandhi.

Pastor's message...

Sunday at the Movies

This summer at Little Home Church, on some Sundays, we will be using film clips as illustrations for sermons. Movies and video are a huge part of our culture in fact over 60% of us learn from a visual experience as opposed to hearing something. Films often reflect what's going on in our culture for better or for worse. And movies also challenge our thinking and evoke powerful feelings. What I have done for eleven summers has been to preach the gospel while using film clips that parallel Biblical themes. I believe using film clips in worship can be a meaningful way to relate the Bible to our culture and our faith to our life.

On Sunday, July 5 in honor of our country I will preach about speaking up for our faith and our church with the help of the classic film "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington." It takes passion, courage and faith to speak up about Jesus, our faith and our church.

On Sunday, July 17, we'll talk about how being faithful can include working for justice with the help of the film "Amazing Grace." This movie tells the story of William Wilberforce a British MP from 1780 to 1825 where he challenged Parliament to abolish the slave trade and also recounts his encounter with John Newton and his composition of the hymn "Amazing Grace".

Join us for worship, film clips with a message, and fun!

I also want to make sure you know that the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, Arun Gandhi, will be speaking from our pulpit at our July 26 service. He will offer thoughts about peace and nonviolence and share stories of life with his grandfather. Hope you can make it, and you may want to come early to get a seat!

May we grow as disciples to help transform this world,

Pastor David

Moderator's update...

The 2015/2016 LHC Church Council would most sincerely like to thank those who have served on the Council and participated in the church's various ministries this past year. We are also most grateful to those who have chosen to continue in their past role on the Council for another year, and have moved to a different role. It's often said that "variety is the spice of life," so when a "seasoned" council member or ministry participant moves into another role, the church doubly benefits. We get experienced and a new perspective as they accept the challenges of a new task. The spice level really gets "kicked up a notch" when we joyously welcome new members to the church council and its ministries.

So why not spice up your own life a bit? Surely there is some facet of our church life to which your own experience and skill and desire could add some spice! Our church is truly blessed with so many members and friends having so many valuable and worthwhile skill sets. When we tithed, we were asked to tithe not only our treasure, but just as importantly our time and talent. An essential tenet of our Faith is that we serve others as Christ serves us. The "Little Drummer Boy" (of Christmas Carol fame) had only the music of his drum to offer the baby Jesus in His crib. We all, as accomplished adults, have so much more to give, and so many ways that we can serve and share with others. You may feel that your donated time or skill is inconsequential (just like the little drummer boy), but not so to those who benefit from them, and certainly not to our Lord. When we serve others, we serve Him!

Peace,

Alex Kentfield

Activities...

A Book & A Prayer Book Club
1st Tuesday of every month
7 pm in the Parish Hall

Just in time to help celebrate the 4th of July, we'll be discussing Founding Mothers, by Cokie Roberts. Her book brings us women who fought the Revolution as valiantly as the men, often defending their very doorsteps. Drawing upon personal correspondence, private journals, and even favored recipes, Roberts reveals the often surprising stories of these fascinating women, bringing to life the everyday trials and extraordinary triumphs of individuals like Abigail Adams, Mercy Otis Warren, Deborah Reed Franklin, Eliza Pickney and Martha Washington - proving that without our exemplary women, the new country might have never survived.

We'll meet in the Parish Hall, July 7 at 7 pm and we hope you'll join us and bring a friend.

The selection for August will be The Water is Wide by Pat Conroy. The group will meet Aug. 4.

Men of LHC

The First Annual Little Home Church/Kane County Cougar Outing on Sunday, June 7 was a success with over 50 attendees. Several members brought friends, kids, grand-kids and their appetites (try the nachos). A great time was had by all, especially when the weather cleared after a stormy morning.

At our June meeting we looked forward toward the future in keeping with our mission of Fellowship, Service and Growth as follows:

Saturday, July 11 - After our breakfast at 8:30 am, we will have a painting party until 11 am for exterior walls of the Pastor's office and parts of the Guild House along with any other chores from the Facilities Ministry's list.

Sunday, September 13 - We will organize an outdoor service at Pratt Wayne Woods. Breakfast will be served at 8:30 am followed by Worship at 9:30 am where Pastor David has arranged for a guest whose message and music will inspire all as we enter a new church year. At 10:30 am we will Bless the Hogs (i.e. motorcycles) who will be riding on behalf of a worthy Veterans group.

October 2 & 3 - A men's retreat at Tower Hill in Southwest Michigan that includes dinner at a brewery/restaurant on Lake Michigan on Friday night, sleepover in their new facility and a program that will be led by Paul Metres, a strong Christian layman, psychologist and Viet Nam Veteran.

As can be seen, we are gaining momentum and hope to energize all the Men of LHC. Hope to see you for breakfast on July 11 at LHC or another second Saturday of the month.

Gardening Angels

Saturday, July 11
10 am - Fellowship and prepare garden flower bouquets for Sunday Service
11 am - Tend the Garden

Let's gather in the LHC garden for fellowship and inspiration. Bring a friend...
and a favorite prayer, book, poem, or just a good gardening tip to share. We'll have coffee, tea, and treats too. For those who are willing and able...we'll stay to tend the garden so it looks great for Sunday Service.

The LHC garden has been celebrated much by members and visitors alike, and as you all know, the garden is a living thing and needs constant consistent care. A garden's beauty can be more ephemeral than we might think without the hand of the gardener.

The group continues to study James. Whether you are a newbie to Bible study or have some experience you are welcome.
NO preparation is necessary. The group meets in Pastor David's office and they are anxious for you to join them.

The Search & Call Committee is actively reviewing the Profile packages of UCC clergy which have been forwarded by the Conference. We are evaluating the submitters in terms of uniform criteria that we established at the outset of the evaluation process. We will proceed to the next step of the selection process with interviews of those candidates whose resumes suggest that they may possess the qualities and qualifications that best serve our needs, and who remain interested in serving Little Home Church after they reviewed our Local Church Profile.
