Pastor's message...

Where are the Men?

With Father's Day coming June 21 I was reminded of a book I read two years ago entitled, Why Men Hate Going to Church. It was an eye opener for me along with the Christian men's gathering I attended where the author David Murrow was the speaker. Some of the ideas made sense to me but not all.

Historically, beginning with Jesus, the church has been "dominated" by men for better and for worse. I am glad I am in the UCC where gender is not one sided. But you don't have to look far to see that in most of our mainline Protestant churches across the U.S. women outnumber men about 2:1 in worship and active membership. There are fewer men in churches and fewer men going into the ministry. The good news is that surveys show that when more men come to church, families come too and growth occurs.

One of the theories David Murrow offers is that men don't feel comfortable in many churches because the men don't generally excel at the skill set that churches employ (verbal expression, sharing feelings, sitting still, 'small talk', singing hymns).

Churches need opportunities for men to be task oriented, enjoy the fellowship of other men, and help others by doing service.

Another idea in the book is that some men find church irrelevant to the lives they lead in the work world of stress and the challenge of balancing roles of husband, father and worker. Women balance similar roles as well but the perception of some men is that the church with lots of women present may not understand who they are and their faith questions.

I believe Little Home Church is on a path of changing the equation and encouraging more men to be active and present. Our Men's Group is one example. I invite us to have some conversations about how we can encourage men to come to LHC, and for that matter how we can invite and encourage anyone to come to LHC!

Happy Father's Day!

Pastor David

Moderator's update...

We have just completed Phase III of the New Beginnings program (NB). There were approximately thirty members and six facilitators who attended and engaged in exhilarating discussions about our Church: who we are, what our current mission is or is not, how we have or have not served this community. Then folks began to think about the future and what could be. What possibilities!

Now that the group sessions have concluded the Leadership Team will gather for a follow up meeting. Session notes will be reviewed. Thoughts and concerns shared. The question will be asked, have emerging possibilities for our future and/or a consensus of thought among the groups been identified? If so, then a recommendation will be drafted naming the opportunity for ministry moving forward. The draft will be submitted to Council for discussion, revisions if indicated, adoption and presentation to the congregation. Then our work begins in earnest.

We have the opportunity to determine our future. Change is not easy. It can be uncomfortable. Change can bring out feelings of fear and uncertainty. It will be a major undertaking and require much from all members but God's church with a clear vision of its purpose and mission will be the reward.

As I write this update, there are vacant positions on our Council and Committees for the 2015/2016 term. What is your passion? Is education or the fellowship events your thing? Or is planning for our financial security an area of interest? Whatever your spiritual gift, might you be willing to pledge your time and talent in God's service? If so, please contact me.

Just a reminder, our annual June Congregational Meeting (lovingly called the Junual meeting) is scheduled for June 7th. We shall gather in the Parish Hall promptly at 10:45 am. So grab your coffee and treats and join us for a LHC update and approval of the leadership slate for the coming year.

This is my final By The Way update as my term as your Moderator is coming to a close. It has been a very busy yet exciting year. As I stated in my Annual Report, it seems as if my feet hit the ground running last July and haven't stopped. We have experienced challenges (budget deficit concerns); changes (our settled Pastor retires and we find ourselves in an interim period); seen new ventures take root and thrive (Men's Group, rebirth of mission trips); embarked on a re-visioning process (New Beginnings). And the list goes on and on. Whew, what a year!

In closing, it has been my honor and privilege to serve as your Moderator. Working alongside so many wonderful individuals has been my blessing. This small Church accomplishes some big things due to the efforts of hardworking folks with a strong

commitment to God and this Church family. God at work indeed!

So I wish you shalom my friends and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.,

Shalom my friends,

Susi

Activities...

Music Sunday, June 21, the choir will present Robert Ray's "Gospel Mass." The piece presents the traditional sections of the ordinary mass in a gospel style featuring a combo of piano, brass, and drums. It is sung in English and features soloists and choir in a lively upbeat musical setting. This one you won't want to miss! Bring your friends...it's a great way to introduce them to the Little Home Church.

Finally, this summer July 12-15 The United Church of Christ's Musicians' Association will hold it's national Conference at Elmhurst College. I am in charge of advertising and PR and need your help! I need people or companies to buy ads in our program book and also offer to sponsor refreshment breaks and receptions. Please contact me at my email below if you can help out.

And like every summer our choir takes a well-deserved break. We welcome special music during our worship services. If you are interested in signing up for one Sunday there is a sign up sheet outside my office.

Men of LHC
Play Ball...!

On Sunday, June 7, the first ever Little Home (Run) Church/Kane County Cougars outing will take place at 1 pm at the Fifth Third Bank ballpark in Geneva. We have 50+ confirmed attendees and a few tickets remain. Please contact Art Zwemke at 630.207.8793 or at aczwemke@gmail.com

For our May service project we hung around during the Annual Plant Sale and worked on the Facilities Ministry's ever present and always long ToDo list. Indoor items included a balky door lock and a cleanup of the storage area for our new Parish Hall chairs. Outdoors included weeding and tree trimming. In addition, some of our group traveled to a Michigan retreat as sponsors for our four confirmands.

Our next meeting is on Saturday, June 13 at 8:30 am at the Colonial Restaurant on Route 64 (aka North Avenue if you grew up in the city). It is interesting to note that we are really getting to know one another through our group, much more so than a wave at church. Please join us and bring a friend.

Pilgrimage

We are looking for people (ages 14 and up) to join us on our next Pilgrimage, June 20 to June 28. Our first stop will be to the Appalachian South FolkLife Center in Pipestem, WV. On Sunday, we will enjoy white water rafting. During the next several days we will attend cultural programs in the evenings to learn the history of this West Virginia community. During the days we will work within the homes of elderly people by helping them with household maintenance such as painting, carpentry, plumbing, and landscaping. We then head to Oberlin, Ohio to learn of its involvement in the Underground Railroad as well as take a tour of Oberlin College. We will conclude our trip by attending the UCC National Convention. Please consider donating your time and talents by helping others along with having a good time together. Contact Kathy Haben with any questions:  gregsasst@aquascapeinc.com

Ministry news...

Outreach Ministry

Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans

(MSHV) is a new addition to LHC's Outreach Ministry as of March 2015. Nancy and Rik Alex introduced me to the Shelter and I am so grateful and thankful that they did. IMHO, the words "homeless vets" should never appear in the same sentence. I have a windshield sticker that reads "Freedom isn't Free" and I am more than passionate about helping eliminating homeless veterans. MSHV provides transitional and permanent housing for homeless veterans, psychological treatment, transportation, financial management skills, legal assistance, daily living skills, case management, education, employment training, and medical care access. The Shelter moved in the Spring to a much bigger/newer facility that now allows them to deliver even more critical services. The space includes a training room, a free commissary, temporary housing, and administrative offices.

The area they serve is DuPage and N. Cook county and downtown although they don't like to turn anyone away. The Shelter primarily caters to male vets, but they have recently added a shelter specifically devoted to female vets called Tammy's Trace.

An immediate need has been identified for a female room set up. The set up includes a night table ($170), bureau ($450), and a single bed ($340), mattress/box spring, and bedding. Outreach, with the support of Council, has agree to provide the room set up for Tammy's Trace. I am working with Jane Tyschenko, Programs Director, on the details. Art sent a $500 check in April, we will cut another check for the remaining balance, and give it to Bob Adams, Co-Founder, when he comes for their Mission Moment on June 14th.

MSHV also has an open volunteer opportunity for putting together and setting up the furniture at Tammy's Trace. I will be announcing the request volunteers in church over the coming weeks and I am working with Jane to identify a date and time. This may be driven by the folks who elect to volunteer.

Community Crisis Center Turns 40!

A couple of Sundays ago, Gretchen Vapner, Executive Director for the Community Crisis Center in Elgin was present during worship to tell us a little about the center. The center offers many services such as a 24-hour crisis hotline and information and referral; emergency temporary shelter for women and children who are homeless due to domestic violence or financial crisis; individual and group counseling; medical, legal and welfare advocacy; financial assistance to abate homelessness; an emergency food pantry; and community education. The Community Crisis Center service area includes northern Kane County from St. Charles to the northern edge of the county and far northwest suburban Cook County, and there are no service area limits for domestic violence victims. The center serves over 6000 people annually. The center has long been one of LHC's outreach partners and it is celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year. In celebration, the center is offering a car raffle, for which tickets are $20 each or 6 for $100. To support the center (and maybe win car) click here to enter!

And finally, a big thank you to those who participated in our Blood Drive last month. We were able to collect 19 pints of blood!

Education...

Wednesday Morning Bible Study
We have just begun to study James. Whether you are a newbie to Bible study or have some experience you are welcome.
NO preparation is necessary. The group meets Wednesday mornings, 10 am in Pastor David's office and they are anxious for you to join them.

Confirmation Sunday
On Sunday, May 24 we welcomed four young men into membership during our worship; Jake, Charles, Alex and Luke. They met with Pastor David every Thursday throughout the school year as they explored their journey of faith. We offer our congratulations to these young men and will enjoy seeing where life takes them.

Search & call...

The Search & Call Committee met to discuss comments of the Council and to make the changes in the Church Profile that were suggested by Rev. Dr. Jonathan Knight of the Fox Valley Conference. As of May 20, LHC's position of a sitting (permanent) pastor has been placed on the UCC's National Listing of Employment Opportunities electronic 'bulletin board.' The S&C committee can now expect to begin receiving inquiries from qualified pastoral candidates. The S&C team will keep the church council and the general congregation advised to the team's progress but due to UCC policy and various personal privacy regulations, the team cannot discuss any specified candidates application.

gardening angels...

Let's gather in the garden...

Friday, June 12
10 am - Fellowship
11 am - Tend the Garden

Let's gather in the LHC garden for fellowship and inspiration. Bring a favorite prayer, book, poem, or just a good gardening tip to share. We'll have coffee, tea, and treats too.

For those who are willing and able...we'll stay to tend the garden so it looks great for Sunday's 'Flag Day' celebration.

The LHC garden has been celebrated much by members and visitors alike, and as you all know, the garden is a living thing and needs constant consistent care. A garden's beauty can be more ephemeral than we might think without the hand of the gardener.

thanks...

Dear Little Home Church:

Thank you so much for the care packages you sent me throughout the year! I have truly appreciated them (especially when finals rolled around) and they have always brightened my day whenever I received them. I really appreciate the care and support even when I am miles and miles away. My freshman year at Butler University is officially over, and it is very strange to realize my first year of college is over. Thank you again for the many gifts.
