May 2015

Pastor's message...

May is important!

First, like a lot of us I love this month for its normally beautiful weather and for all the buds that open giving us a bouquet of color! What a gift God has given us in nature at its finest new growth and "new beginnings."

Second, May is important in my family if you want to remember significant family events. When I was younger it was my mom's birthday and my parents' anniversary. Nowadays it's our oldest daughter's birthday and the anticipation of 2 more birthdays and an anniversary not far behind in June. Phew! Third, for Little Home Church, May is new members joining on May 3. It's Confirmation and Pentecost Sunday, May 24. And those are only the Sundays.

But the single most important event happening during May for Little Home Church is the New Beginnings gatherings where all of us are asked to participate and give our input into the design of our church future. I submit to you that this is the single most important activity for LHC all year, even more important than the search for a new pastor! Because if we don't have a clear vision-direction of where we are going, how can we expect a new pastor to lead us? For that matter how can we effectively select a new pastor if we don't know what skill set from a pastor will best suit our future?

"Where there is no vision, the people perish." This verse from the King James Version of Proverbs 29:18 has always hit me hard. If we don't listen to God's promptings (our LHC heritage, our church strengths, our challenging demographics, our deepest hopes for a church future), then we will lack a vision and we will likely die away as an aging shrinking congregation. That's not what anyone wants! But in order to have something different, we need to re-vison the future of LHC. And all of us need to participate in one of the 3 New Beginnings gatherings. Still available is the gathering on Saturday May 2 or the Thursday evening series May 7, 14, 21.

Sign up in Parish Hall! Six hours is a small gift of your time committed to building the future of LHC for the next 6 years! Your input is crucial. Let's create God's Little Home Church of the future.

Council News

As you may recall, we are now in Phase III of the New Beginnings (NB) program. This portion of the process is dependent on the congregation to engage in soulful conversation about our strengths, challenges, mission and ministry, resources and our willingness for growth and change at LHC. We invite you to take this opportunity to help us discern God's plan and shape our future.

A church is a building. The Church is God's faithful people in action.

It is not too late to participate in one of the NB presentations. There is a daytime retreat on May 2 (9 am-3 pm) as well as a Thursday evening series May 7, 14 and 21 (7-9 pm). If you missed session I of the Sunday series (April 26), you are welcome to join us for the remaining gatherings on May 3 and 17 (11 am-1 pm). Your input is vitally important. You will find information and sign-up sheets on the table display in the Parish Hall.

We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us. Romans 12:6

The 2014/2015 Council year is coming to a close, but there are numerous Ministry opportunities available for the coming Council term. Perhaps you are an organizer, have leadership skills, business minded, an idea person who thinks out of the box. Or perhaps you are a worker bee who enjoys being in the mix of things. There is a place for you on our ministries and committees whether your interest lies in taking on the role of a Chairperson or filling out the ranks. I encourage you to take the time to reflect on your passion and commit your time and talent to the work of the Church.

Council has determined the date for the Junual Congregational Meeting: June 7 directly after our Worship Service. Understandably, June is a busy time for all and Council did take into consideration the Men's Group Cougar's outing scheduled for that day. The goal is a prompt start, expedient attention to business and a timely dismissal so folks who choose can participate in both events. This tends to be a shorter meeting as the primary focus is the approval and installation of the 2015/2016 Council. Please know your presence and input is of the utmost importance to the life and ministry of Little Home Church. So mark your calendar and plan to attend to ensure a quorum is present.

Shalom my friends,

Susi

A few words from the moderator-elect...

LHC needs a few good men!
And you don't have to be a Marine or have served in another branch either. The Men's breakfast group has already evolved into a Team of Servants for Christ: they look for good works that need to be done...then have good fun and fellowship doing them! In bringing joy to others, they bring joys to themselves. Selfless joy quickly becomes a blessing to both the served and the servant. This is one of the first lessons learned by the Apostles and Saints. And as we sing, "we are all saints too," let's remember that there are many opportunities to serve each other and the greater community.

Our various ministries need more men to participate in them and perhaps even head one up. When you tithed this year, you also indicated an area of possible service. Open your hands and your heart, and receive the joy of serving by taking an active part, to the degree you are able, in one of LHC's ministries. I assure you that your faith will grow, your perspective will widen, and you will be blessed.

A Book & A Prayer Book Club

4th Tuesday of every month

7 pm in the Parish Hall

Important news from A Book & A Prayer! Our NEW meeting day will be the 4th TUESDAY of each month. We will continue to meet at 7 pm in the Parish Hall.

Our May selection, an international best seller is, The Chalice and the Blade: Our History, Our Future by Raine Eisler. The author draws us back in time, when women were the equal of men. Religion celebrated life and nature, with the Goddess (symbolized by the chalice) being the primary figure of worship. Minoan Crete marks the last instance of this social and religious organizational pattern. Conquering peripheral tribes, such as the Hebrews, introduced a patriarchal, death-centered system (symbolized by the blade) that valued aggression and dominance and denigrated earlier faith in the Goddess. Such views, expressed in the Old Testament as well as in the Gospels, continue to influence the direction of Western culture to the present day. Some books are like revelations, they open the spirit to unimaginable possibilities. With the most passionate eloquence, Raine Eisler proves that the dream of peace is not an impossible utopia.

Our meeting will be May 26 at 7 pm, and please bring a friend. If you need a ride, please contact me.

Choir and Musical Happenings...

Thank you to all the musicians who created such beautiful musical offerings during our Lent and Easter services.

Mother's Day, May 10, the choir will be performing two great anthems with an instrumental combo--bring Mom for a rockin' good time!

Music Sunday, June 21, the choir will present Robert Ray's "Gospel Mass." The piece presents the traditional sections of the ordinary mass in a gospel style featuring a combo of piano, brass, and drums. It is sung in English and features soloists and choir in a lively upbeat musical setting. This one you won't want to miss! Bring your friends...it's a great way to introduce them to the Little Home Church.

Finally, this summer July 12-15 The United Church of Christ's Musicians' Association will hold it's national Conference at Elmhurst College. I am in charge of advertising and PR and need your help! I need people or companies to buy ads in our program book and also offer to sponsor refreshment breaks and receptions. Please contact me at my email below if you can help out.

Men of LHC...
We are pleased to report that our first Service Projects were a success. One involved an outdoor spring cleanup that included rakes, stretching on ladders and lots of laughs. The other project was indoors and included some cleanup, carpentry and plumbing and no loss of digits! Our next Service Project will coincide with the Annual Plant Sale on May 9. Breakfast of bagels and coffee will be served at 8:30 am followed by shortening the To Do List from the Facilities Ministry. The church will be better for your efforts and you can bring home some plants as well.

There is still time to buy tickets to the Kane County Cougar game on Sunday, June 7 at 1 pm. In between the worship service and the game, our Junual Congregational Meeting will be held where a slate of candidates will be presented for the leadership of LHC. Tickets are just $9 and can be purchased by contacting Art Zwemke at lukedux@aol.com or 630-207-8793.

Lastly, mark your calendars for Sunday, Sept. 13 for the kickoff of the new church year with an outdoor worship service at Pratt Wayne Woods. We'll start with a breakfast at 8 am, service at 9:30 am, and a Blessing of the Hogs at 10:30. Don't worry, you'll be home in time for the Bears home opener at noon with the Packers!

Next meeting: Saturday, May 9, 8:30 am

Little Home Church

Hope to see you guys there!

During the days we will work within the homes of elderly people by helping them with household maintenance such as painting, carpentry, plumbing, and landscaping. We then head to Oberlin, Ohio to learn of its involvement in the Underground Railroad as well as take a tour of Oberlin College. We will conclude our trip by attending the UCC National Convention. Please consider donating your time and talents by helping others along with having a good time together. Contact Kathy Haben with any questions gregsasst@aquascapeinc.com

Ministry news...

Evangelism

We are thrilled to announce our New Members who will be joining LHC on Sunday, May 3.

Karen Kaluzsa (pictured on the right) moved to Wayne 10 years ago from Chicago. She bought Bob Johnson's house (former member of LHC) on Orchard Lane. She found LHC warm, friendly, and spiritual, just what she was looking for. Karen is a graduate of the College of William and Mary and Loyola University Law School. Besides having a law degree, she also has a degree in Library Science and began her career at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and managed their Medical Library, spending her days immersed in research. This was her dream job until the institute moved their library facilities to Northwestern Medical School. Using her unique expertise, Karen joined A.T. Kearney, a global management consulting firm, specializing and consulting with pharmaceutical and medical related companies. Luckily, Karen is able to work from home 3 days a week which enables her to enjoy her beautiful home, the serenity of Wayne, and her 5 cats, 2 dogs, and a canary. She is also a recent member of the Wayne Garden Club. LHC is very fortunate to welcome Karen.

We are also delighted that Debra and Glen Galloway will also be joining LHC. They, too, live in Wayne on Curling Pond Road and moved from Roselle several years ago. The Galloways are avid bicyclists and enjoy the outdoors, weather permitting of course. However, they also enjoy their home in Arizona to enjoy beautiful weather. Debra is a former flight attendant for American Airlines, enabling her love for travel. However, after 30 years, she decided it was time to enjoy retirement life and presently assists Glen with special projects part time at his two companies, located in Elmhurst and St. Charles. Glen's companies specialize in the manufacturing and uses of plastics. Glen was raised a Catholic but has found a new home at the LHC. We are so delighted.

Outreach Ministry
The Community Crisis Center (aka battered women's shelter) would like to thank everyone for donating toiletries. These items include soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc., which are always in demand and fulfill a very basic, essential need. We look forward to hearing from Gretchen Vapnar, the center's director, on Sun. May 17 to share a Mission Moment with our congregation. This will be a brief overview of the services and/or support the center provides the community and how they leverage our support.

Little Home Church will begin to support MSHV - The Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans. MSHV offers an array of programs that serve homeless and at-risk veterans. Our support will help them to continue to walk with veterans, providing life-changing services that are truly bringing our heroes home.
The MSHV presently has a job opening for a Director of Development. If you or anyone you might know are interested click here for more more information or email info@mshv.org

Christian Education

Vacation Bible School - June 15-19
Location: Immanuel United Church of Christ, Bartlett

LHC will be combining resources this summer with the Bartlett church and welcome both adult and youth volunteers to help with the weeks activities. It's time to register children for VBS, so contact Lori Haseltine at lori-h@comcast.net

Our next Movie Night is Friday, May 15, 7 pm, in the  Parish Hall. The movie "Sarah's Key" with Kristin Scott Thomas in a drama which cuts back and forth in time to tell the slowly intertwining stories of Julia Jarmond, an expatriate in Paris in 2002, and Sarah Starzynski, a 10 year old arrested by the French police during the infamous "Vel d'Hiv" roundup of 1942. In July of that year, 13,000 Jews were corralled into the Velodrome d'Hiver and held in appalling conditions for several days before internment in transit camps, and then Auschwitz.

Our next movie will Friday, June 17, "The Magic of Belle Isle."

A four-session tutor training workshop is set for Tuesdays and Thursdays, May 12, 14, 19 & 21 from 6:30 pm to 9 pm, at the St. Charles Public Library.

You do not need to know a second language or have a teaching background to help. Once you are trained you will be matched with an adult and meet with your student one hour each week at a time and location that is convenient.

Staff provides continuing support. To register for the workshop or for more information visit www.lvfv.org or call Peg Coker at 630.584.4428.
