Pastor's message...

2nd Chances aka New Beginnings

The resurrection of Jesus the Christ was a true 2nd chance for Jesus of Nazareth. He had (and still has) a new beginning as the spiritual Christ we talk to and walk with. As followers of Jesus, we get to have 2nd chances, and boy do we need them! When life is going badly, when we have made mistakes, when we have done wrong; we can turn to Christ and ask for help in being renewed, revitalized.

It's not magical or psychological it is a spiritual small "r" resurrection which happens as we get in touch with our true inner self, the one God created. Our true existence is spiritual i.e. we are souls inside a body not a body with a soul!" As the writer of the gospel of John says, "whoever believed...He made them to be their true selves, their child of God selves." (John 1:12) That's who we really are and when we connect with that self we become more and more like the God-child we are created to be. We begin a new life, a life in the spirit, living every day with a resurrected faith, a spiritual outlook.

Second century Bishop Irenaeus said it this way: "The glory of God is a human being who is fully alive." Pastor David Russell says it this way, the glory of Christ is a church that is fully alive...a church full of vital, faithful Easter people, people of the new beginning. And that's just what Little Home Church is going through, i.e. a process of new beginnings by finding a new vision as a church and finding a new pastor to help lead that vision forward.

I was looking for a clever illustration of 2nd chances and new beginnings and there are tons of them but none as powerful as the resurrection of Jesus and the renewal of his church. There is a fire in the Holy Spirit that can "fire" us up to be the vital, relevant and faithful church God wants us to be here and now.

The resurrection of Jesus the Christ was not only a 2nd chance for Jesus of Nazareth; it is a new beginning for the church that follows Him.

After all, we are an Easter people.

Pastor David

Moderator's update...

Council News

The Council has approved a three-month contract extension, April 1st through June 30th, engaging the services of Pastor David as our Interim. The terms of an interim contract call for a six-month commitment with renewals in three-month increments. Keep in mind, the usual interim tenure is twelve to twenty-four months. Thank you David for all your hard work guiding LHC through the process.

In light of the projected 2015 budget deficit, I feel it is important for the congregation to be kept up-to-date on our financial status. Per our Treasurer's monthly report we have experienced a very slow start to 2015. Operating and Pledge receipts are well behind the three-year average. Let us pray for an upward trend in the weeks and months to come.

We often hear timing is everything. Lent provides us opportunity for inner reflection and soul searching in preparation for Easter. The Easter resurrection fills us with hope for the days to come. Coincidentally, as Lent draws to a close and the Easter miracle looms closer, we are experiencing a move from the gloom of winter to new life everywhere in creation. Spring, a beacon of hope, a new beginning. Good timing or once again an assurance of God's love?

New Beginnings

As the earth comes alive again, we at LHC move to the next phase of the New Beginnings program. It is at this juncture that your input is required. Each congregation member is invited to participate in Phase III by attending one of the congregational discussion series. The team is offering a day-long Saturday gathering; a series of three two-hour sessions Sunday after Worship; and a series of three two-hour Thursday evening sessions. Look for posted information on dates, times and sign-up sheets in the Parish Hall. Or email the church office to let us know which 'Path to Participation' you would like to choose: lori@littlehomechurch.org

..................................................................

Sunday Series - Apr 26, May 3 & 17 - 11 am to 1 pm

Thursday Series - May 7, 14, & 21 - 7 to 9 pm

Saturday Retreat - May 2 - 9 am to 3 pm

..................................................................

At the first session, attendees will receive a copy of the comprehensive report compiled by Doug Pfeiffer from Hope Partnership. The reports will be reviewed and discussed in depth in small groups facilitated by a team member. Topics for conversation will include the life/mission/ministry of LHC in the community; current energy levels and member participation; available resources; challenges for growth; and our readiness to embrace change.

All your thoughts and ideas shared in the various sessions will be collated and brought to the congregation. Then, after prayerful consideration of all the discussions, the goal is to come to a congregational consensus on the future mission/direction for LHC, what God has called us to do. Once LHC has made a thoughtful, realistic decision about the future we can move forward and our work shall begin in earnest.

New Beginnings is not a problem-solving program for LHC or any Church. It is a path to guide us into looking at ourselves with clear vision and an open mind to unknown possibilities. To move forward we must stop doing the same things over and over again expecting different results each time.

Dialogue and open lines of communication are vital to the success of this process. Please feel free to bring any comments or question to a member of the team: Pastor David; Kathy Haben; Kathleen and Bob Kaska; Nancy Schatzeder; Peg Schramuk; Susi and Jim Winquist.

Shalom my friends,
Susi

Activities...

A Book & A Prayer Book Club

4th Monday of every month

7 pm in the Parish Hall

As we finish our journey through Lent we will begin "traveling" with author Anne Lamott on her journey as she became a believer. Please join us as we discuss Traveling Mercies: Some Thoughts on Faith.

This is a chronicle of faith and spirituality that is at once tough, personal, affectionate, wise and very funny. With an exuberant mix of passion, insight, and humor, Anne Lamott takes us on a journey through her often troubled past to illuminate her devout but quirky walk of faith. In a narrative spiced with stories and scripture, with diatribes, laughter and tears, Lamott tells how, against all odds, she came to believe in God and then, even more miraculously, in herself. She shows us the myriad ways in which this sustains and guides her, shining the light of faith on the darkest part of ordinary life and exposing surprising pockets of meaning and hope. Whether writing about her family or her dreadlocks, sick children or old friends, the most religious women of her church or the men she's dated, Lamott reveals the hard-won wisdom gathered along her path to connectedness and liberation.

Our meeting will be April 27 at 7 pm, as we discuss and share our own faith travels. Please bring a friend. If you need a ride, please contact me.

Men of LHC...
Our group continues to develop along a path of Fellowship, Service and Growth as evidenced by the following:

Fellowship - We have reserved 50 grandstand seats to the Kane County Cougar game on Sunday, June 7 at 1 pm. Tickets are just $9 and can be purchased by contacting Art Zwemke at lukedux@aol.com or 630-207-8793. The deadline is April 26 for a final count. This should be a fun outing for members and friends of LHC.

Service On the morning of Saturday, April 11, we will help one, or more of our long-time members with a spring cleanup and some much-needed repairs to their home. If you or someone you know is in need of some help in this regard, please contact Pastor David. We'll get this Service day started at LHC at 8 am with bagels, coffee and juice. Plan to bring your favorite tools.

Growth Each of us is moved by the Word, whether in a sermon, or the Bible, or a book, or even a song. We are seeking a common platform for each of us to express the mileposts along our Faith Journey. We will discuss further on Saturday, May 2 at 8:30 am at the Colonial Restaurant located in St. Charles on Route 64.

Next meeting: Saturday, May 2, 8:30 am

Colonial Restaurant (Rte. 64 and Tyler)

Hope to see you guys there!

Ministry news...

Evangelism

Last month the Evangelism Committee had a very fun "Getting To Know the LHC" dinner. Our Membership Classes will begin on April 12! There will be three classes altogether; April 12, 19, and 26.  culminating with Membership Sunday on May 3We have participants for our classes, but could always use a few more. Please contact me if you know of anyone who might be interested in joining the church. In addition, we are sending out personal notes to recent visitors with an update on Easter activities and our special music.

Good News! After many years of trying, we now have Little Home Church street signs, along with other area churches, placed on Rt. 59, and visible going both north and south, and with with arrows pointing OUR direction. I am so excited! This became a group effort among myself, Wayne Police Chief, Dan Callahan, Wayne Police Officer Tom Reed, and our member, Rob Reed, who serves as a Village Trustee. A big thank you goes to Dan, Tom, and Rob, and when you see them, please extend your personal thank you. All three of them bent over backwards to make this happen and the LHC truly appreciates their efforts and kindness.

Outreach Ministry
Outreach Ministry has been busy with a variety of activities beginning with providing 45 Easter dinners to the Feeding Northwest DuPage food pantry. Dinners were dropped off on March 28 at Resurrection Church on Army Trail Road.

The Community Crisis Center (aka battered women's shelter) would like to thank everyone for donating toiletries. These items include soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc., which are always in demand and fulfill a very basic, essential need. We look forward to hearing from
Gretchen Vapnar, the center's director, on Sun. May 17 to share a Mission Moment with our congregation. This will be a brief overview of the services and/or support the center provides the community and how they leverage our support. The next Mission Moment will be provided by Deb Howe with the Renz Addiction Center on Sunday, April 12.

Christian Education

Vacation Bible School - June 15 - 19
Location: Immanuel United Church of Christ, Bartlett

LHC will be combining resources this summer with the Bartlett church and welcome both adult and youth volunteers to help with the weeks activities. It's time to register children for VBS, so contact Lori Haseltine at lori-h@comcast.net

Our next Movie Night is Friday, April 17, 7 pm, in the  Parish Hall. The movie "St. Vincent" a comedy with Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy (PG13). "At first glance, Vincent feels like a familiar and predictable character, but Murray's deft touch provides this protagonist with many complex layers. Like Vincent himself, St. Vincent isn't perfect, but Murray's performance is." The movie will make you laugh and cry. The buttered popcorn is pretty good too.

Mark your calendars for Friday, May 15, "Sarah's Key" and Friday, June 17, "The Magic of Belle Isle."

Also, if you have ideas for our next adult educational forum please let us know.

Thank You to all who have helped Little Home Church buy 90+ much-needed new chairs for the Parish Hall.

There is still time to donate to this effort: $80 ea.

Make your "Yes...I'll buy a Chair!" pledge and tape it to the sample chair on display in the Parish Hall. Teddy will show you how...!

thank
you...

On behalf of every member of Northside Brass, I'd like to thank you for letting us host our spring concert at the Little Home Church. The facilities worked perfectly for our needs, and the turnout was excellent. There were many church members there, who were so wonderful and supportive that we felt right at home.

LHC is a wonderful center for the arts in the Fox Valley, and every community around benefits from it. Thank you again and I look forward to our next opportunity to make music together!

Sincerely, Ryan Hobbs
