Christian Education presents...
An Evening
of Gaelic and God

Friday, March 13, 7 pm, Parish Hall

By Maureen O'Donnell--Music, books and art to preview before a PowerPoint about the history of the Celts' culture, art and religion. Discussion of the move from pagan gods to Christianity and how the two were actually blended together and still are today; a beautiful colorful travelogue of Ireland with some of my favorite places and experiences; and I hope all who have traveled there will share their experiences...Bring your own Guiness and Bushmills...!

A deepening retreat during the season of Lent...
Practicing the
Art of Forgiveness

Saturday, March 21, Parish Hall

9 am to 2:30 pm, $40 (includes lunch)

The potential for forgiveness in our lives is mighty & transforming.

If we move to forgive, our lives are freed.

If we can't forgive, our well-being is tied in knots.

How do we practice forgiveness in our world, with our families, with our friends, with our enemies, with our colleagues?

Come explore forgiveness, a grace-filled gift from God.

Rev. Holly Whitcomb, our retreat leader, has been a minister in the United Church of Christ since her graduation from Yale Divinity School in 1978 and has served churches in Connecticut, Iowa and Wisconsin. She is also a graduate of the two-year program for spiritual directors at the Shalem Institute in Washington D.C. A widely traveled retreat leader who directs Kettlewoods Retreats, Holly is also a spiritual director and writer who has published dozens of articles on spirituality. She is the author of four books including Feasting with God, Practicing Your Path, and Seven Spiritual Gifts of Waiting. Holly lives in suburban Milwaukee with her husband John and has two adult children.

Pastor's message...

1. Slow Down

2. Pray

3. Do the important things with love.

4. Let Go!

This little mantra was God's gift to me three months after I had my minor heart attack in 2012, and was struggling to understand how to live a lifestyle both pleasing to God and one that with keep me alive to see my grandchildren married. I used this in a sermon a few weeks ago as I told the story of that heart attack and many of you related how you have had life-threatening and life-changing events in your lives. When we listen to those events we can hear the voice of God teaching us how to be more of who God created us to be, living more closely in the presence of God and more faithfully in service to others.

This is a great way to live any time and especially turning Lent as we seek to be closer to God and more able to serve. We can't know what God's will is for our lives unless we spend time going to God through prayer, worship, Bible study, retreats and service.

Here at LHC we are blessed with many opportunities to grow spiritually this Lenten season. A fantastic workshop on forgiveness is available March 21. Who of us can't learn how to be more forgiving? We also have a wonderful Lenten devotional booklet for each household. We have two Bible studies where we unpack the parables that we preach on the following Sunday. And we will have meaningful opportunities during holy week to worship together on Maundy Thursday, April 2; Good Friday, April 3; and Easter Sunday, April 5.

This is a season of reflection and spiritual growth, so come, come to experience church offerings not because you must but because you may. Come to God this Lenten season because you are invited to rest in the spirit of his love for you through Jesus Christ his son.

May the strength of God pilot us.

May the power of God preserve us.

May the wisdom of God instruct us.

May the hand of God protect us.

May the way of God direct us.

May the shield of God defend us.

May your salvation, Lord, always be ours,

this day and forevermore. Amen.

With you on the journey,

Pastor David

Search & call...

The Search & Call Committee

will meet three times in the month of March working toward completion of our Local Church Profile. A questionnaire seeking the congregation's views and advice on several points has been mailed to members, with our request for its thoughtful completion and return so that we can fold in your thoughts to the Profile that we are preparing. A description of our progress in the search process is included below.

Our personal participation in the Search and Call process is an extraordinary experience for each of the Committee members. The remarks of one of the Committee's members, Alex Kentfield, are included in this issue. We thank you for your patience and cooperation.

Pastoral Search Process of the United Church of Christ:

Where We are Now

Developing a Local Church Profile & Organizing the Search

1. The UCC has created a document called "The Local Church Profile," as the primary tool for each church involved in a pastoral search to locate and successfully fill its open position. It is the task of the Search & Call Committee to develop the Local Church Profile, guided by the 38 questions, some with multiple parts, that span 20 printed pages. Responses to the questions require both objective data and subjective information that characterize the church.

The Committee gathers the objective data from church, community and other appropriate public sources. It meets regularly, working as a group, while also keeping the congregation informed. Members will be asked for their input on a variety of topics, including (but not limited to) views on leadership style, points of faith, social issues, and preaching style and effectiveness. Questionnaires and small group discussions will be offered to gather this input.

The Committee is guided in this process by continual availability and consultation with Dr. Jonathan Knight, our assigned Associate Conference Minister (AM). We met with Dr. Knight at the outset of our Committee's work, and he is consulted with our questions as needed. We will continue to meet with him periodically as we move through the process.

2. A copy of the final Church Profile is shared with the congregation.

3. Upon completion of the profile, our vacancy will be listed in "UCC Employment Opportunities."

4. Additional information will be provided in future issues of By The Way.

A 'spiritual house'...

When originally agreeing to be on the Search and Call Committee (S&C), I thought that the objective was to find and call a new sitting pastor for the Little Home Church (LHC). That was, and is in fact only one of the objectives.

Before you can search and find a pastor, you must search and find yourself, and thus, very quickly, the initial phase of the process literally turns into an intense spiritual self-assessment. Fortunately, you are sharing this search with others who likewise are searching for a pastor, and likewise finding themselves in the process. And within this process we are finding one another, and discovering that LHC is not the building, not the pastor, not the choir or church council, but rather each and every one of us.

Each member of the congregation, each visitor to our services, each participant in our mission and outreach efforts are all bricks, large and small, of the spiritual house that we call the Little Home Church. And each unique brick, hand-made by God, is different.

As a result, the S&C team quickly sees that what one team member wants in a church and pastor, or future for the church, may be quite different in many aspects than what others on the team may envision.

The word team is used to emphasize the relationship of the group to each other: we truly function by consensus. There are no 4 "for" and 3 "against" type "votes" as that would in essence exclude three members from sharing the joy of that or any other decision. As each member of the team is representative of a "stakeholder" group within the congregation (long-term member, newer member, older person, younger person, Wayne area resident, neighboring community resident), we sincerely hope that our deliberations are representative of the entire congregation's view of the present and aspirations for our collective future.

We collectively ask the congregation to wish us Godspeed on our journey."

Peace,

Alex Kentfield

Moderator's update...

Council News

Thank you for your thoughts, concerns, prayers, cards, flowers and meals after my recent surgery. It is most comforting to know that you are remembered. I cannot say that I am up and running at top speed but I make daily gains. Thank you!

At the February meeting Council reviewed the Februal Annual Meeting minutes, Financial report and held lengthy discussions on the contents of all. After input from members unable to attend that meeting, the motions to approve the minutes, accept the proposed deficit budget, transfer monies from the proceeds of the Peterson and Dixon property sales to balance the previous years deficits, and the transfer of $15,000 seed money into the Endowment Fund carried, and the Februal meeting was closed.

"I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?" - Isaiah 43:19

Phase II of the New Beginnings Assessment Program is underway. Pastor David and a contingent of LHC members are gathering with several area Church representatives to participate in a two-day Lay Leadership Retreat on February 27 & 28 hosted by the First Congregational Church of Elmhurst.

As you may recall, last Fall LHC participated in Phase I, an in-depth assessment process. Much information about our Church, members, community and mission was gathered over several weeks. An on-site assessment was held in October that included a building inspection, financial review, community driving tour, and dinner meeting with Pastor David, the New Beginnings assessor, Rev. Jonathan Knight from the Conference staff, and your Moderator. That evening 25 congregation members met in the Parish Hall for an Appreciative Inquiry session to share their thoughts about our Church. This information has been compiled into an individualized comprehensive report of our strengths and challenges, as well as possible future directions.

In Phase II, LHC receives the comprehensive report, lay leaders from our Church are trained to interpret the report, and prepared to guide the congregation through a discernment process to follow God's lead for the future. Pastor David is participating in additional training on congregational change.

In the next several weeks, Phase III will require all Church members to participate in group discussions on LHC resources for ministry, demographic strengths, challenges for growth, our readiness for change, and strategic and visionary ministry. The goal: making wise and realistic decisions about the future at LHC; what God is calling us to do and be at this time and in this place!

Much is being asked of you as a member at Little Home Church as we work through this Interim period; as the Search and Call Committee gather your input for use in the Church Profile; as we re-vision our future direction and ministry. I feel these are not exclusive of each other but rather closely intertwined. Your thoughts, prayers and participation are vital!

"Churches grow by the power of God through the skilled efforts of people." - Rick Warren

Ministry news...

Evangelism
New Member Classes will begin again on April 12, 19 and 26. The class will join the church on Sunday, May 3.

This is really exciting for our church because it is the second class joining in only nine months! As you may recall, we had a big class last Fall. We hope the Figges, Braulicks, Sbarbaros, Sandy, Brianna and Ken are enjoying LHC as much as we enjoy having them.

Also, I will be hosting another 'Get to Know the LHC' Sunday casual dinner at my home on March 8. If you know of someone who might be interested in learning more about UCC and Little Home Church, please contact me. We have a big list already, but it's always great to have more! All are welcome. Or, if you know of someone who just moved into the area and we might have missed, please call me at 630.584.7088 or cell 630.363.8982. Thank you everyone for helping grow the LHC.

Carol Berger

Outreach Ministry
Our ministry is in the process of contacting the organizations we provide monetary donations and asking them to attend a worship service and tell about how our donation benefits their mission. These "Mission Moments" will be scheduled over the next few months.

The Neighborhood Food Pantry has once again requested our assistance in providing Easter dinners to those less fortunate. We will begin with the sign-ups this month. We have committed to 45 dinners. If you would like to help with either of these efforts please contact me.

Bridge Communities will hold its Spring 2015 Mentor Training on Saturday, March 14 from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm at Naperville Covenant Church. This is a one-day session where you will learn who Bridge Communities is, how we serve the mentors and program partners, and the practical aspects of mentoring. Mentors are expected to attend this session before they begin working with Bridge families. This is a multi-year commitment as you work with your individual family, but a worthwhile one. If you have any questions, contact Bridges directly at 630.545.0610.

Christian Education

Sunday School Let's make getting our children into church and Sunday School each week a priority! We have dedicated teachers who would love to work with your children. Pastor David invites them to listen to his Children's Message and then they are dismissed for Sunday School.

LHC will be combining resources with the Congregational Church in Bartlett for Vacation Bible School this summer. It will be held there the week of June 15 and we would love to have some adult and youth volunteers to help. See either Lori Haseltine or Maureen O' Donnell for more information.

Our first Family Movie Night was held last month and the movie "Heaven Is For Real" was enjoyed by all. A few smart members brought their lawn chairs to relax in as they enjoyed the movie!

Next movie night...Friday, April 17, 7 pm, "St. Vincent" a comedy with Bill Murray (PG13). "At first glance, Vincent feels like a familiar and predictable character, but Murray's deft touch provides this protagonist with many complex layers. Like Vincent himself, St. Vincent isn't perfect, but Murray's performance is."

Mark your calendars for Friday, May 15, "Sarah's Key" and Friday, June 17, "The Magic of Belle Isle."

Our ministry recently sent an email to those who identified Christian Education as a ministry for which they would like to volunteer their services. I have asked them to take the lead on the next forum. And as always we welcome ideas from everyone regarding ideas or any movie suggestions!

Recently, I was talking to a friend of mine who introduced me to the Congregational Church. One of the ways they have grown their church membership is with marathons and walks. Any interest in walking Pratt Wayne Woods when the weather warms up? Let us know!

Planting
the seeds...

At the Februal congregational meeting a resolution was passed to transfer $15,000 of "seed" money to the LHC Endowment Fund from the net proceeds of the sale of the Dixon and Peterson properties in 2014. To paraphrase Mark 4:30-32, "the Kingdom of God is like a mustard seed, the smallest of all seeds on earth, yet, when planted, it grows to become the largest of all plants with such big branches that birds can perch in its shade." May this "seed" money grow and provide shade for LHC.

We have noted several families who have included Little Home Church in their wills, but to date, we have not received our first bequest. If you have thoughts about supporting LHC via this Endowment Fund, please contact any one of the following five Trustees:

Carol Berger, 630.584.7088; Dave Poole 630.231.2631;
Wendall Clancy 630.584.5680; Tom Atkins 630.377.2582;
Andrea Ferguson 630.513.7649

Parking place...

One day, a man went as a visitor to a church. He got there early, parked his car and got out. Another car pulled up nearby and parked. The driver got out and said, "I always park there! You took my place."

The visitor went inside for the service, found an empty seat and sat down. A young lady from the church approached him and stated, "That's my seat! You took my place!" The visitor was somewhat distressed by this rude welcome, but still said nothing.

After the service, the visitor went into the sanctuary and sat down to pray. Another member came up to him and said "That's where I always sit! You took my place!" The visitor was even more troubled by this treatment, but still said nothing.

Later as the congregation was praying for Christ to dwell among them the visitor stood up and his appearance began to change. His clothing became a simple robe. Horrible scars became visible on his hands and his now sandaled feet. Someone from the
congregation noticed Him and called out, "What happened to you?"

The visitor replied, as His hat became a crown of thorns, and a tear fell from His eye. "I took your place!" Maybe, just maybe, we can get the world to start thinking of "who took our place."
