Pastor's message...

What Would Jesus Do?

WWJD! Some of you may remember this acronym which was popular years back, "what would Jesus do?" I remember a colleague of mine using this in a sermon and saying how can we know what Jesus would do if we don't learn what Jesus did? Lent is a great time to grow our faith and learn more about what Jesus did so we can follow.

Lent is also a time of Christian disciplines for us to consider as disciples-in-progress. Traditionally Christians have practiced fasting, daily meditation and prayer, giving up something for Lent, giving a special tithe etc. I would like to offer three disciplines that each of us might consider taking on, not things we give up. I am hoping that each one of us will prayerfully consider these Lenten disciplines and choose to practice them.

1. Attend worship and not just on Sunday mornings at 9:30 where there will be a sermon series on Jesus parables, but also attending worship at the special Lenten services on Ash Wednesday; Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.

2. Study God's Word by attending one of our Bible Study groups, where we will also be studying the parables. We have a group Wednesday morning at 10 am, Sunday morning at 11 am (beginning Feb 8), and if there is an interest we will start a third Bible study! You can also practice the Lenten discipline of study by praying and reading with the daily devotional guide we will provide each family beginning Ash Wednesday Feb 18. Finally there's a third way of studying and that is to attend a wonderful and powerful Lenten retreat on March 21 on the topic of forgiveness.

3. The third discipline is to serve others. If you're not already involved, find one of our church's outreach ministries where you can plug in: food pantry; items for the battered women's shelter; helping with college care. Check with our Outreach Ministry coordinator, Valeri Baldwin for other opportunities.

Let's travel this Lenten time together growing as disciples of Jesus the Christ.

Thank You...
"Thanks to all of the Little Home Church families who donated to the Resurrection Food Pantry holiday dinner programs. Whether you donated a Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner (or both!) to a food pantry family, your efforts are appreciated by those we serve! May your continued generosity bring many blessings to you your families in this new year!"

Food Pantry Volunteer Opportunities
In you're interested in volunteering at the Resurrection food pantry site of Neighborhood Food Pantries, we are in need of the volunteers for the following tasks:

Stock shelves Saturday mornings from 8-9:30 am or 9:30-11 am. Volunteer as often as you are able; there is not a set schedule or required number of hours. You let us know when you can help.

Pick up food from the St. Charles Jewel on Mondays at 8 am. We have use of a cargo van for the pick-ups so you don't need to use your own vehicle! The ability to lift 25 pounds is needed. The pick-up and drop-off process takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Volunteer weekly, once a month or fill in as needed. This is a great opportunity for retired gentlemen or people with flexible work from home jobs!

Help on Delivery Day! We receive deliveries of food the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month at 8 am and are in need of more volunteers to help us bring the food into the pantry to store it. And ability to lift 25 pounds is necessary and the delivery takes a little over an hour. It's a great free workout!

If you need more information, call Kathy McKinley at 630.483.9027 or email resbulletin@yahoo.com

Christian Education

Sunday Bible Study will begin Sun Feb 8 after service and fellowship. This day was requested by 42.8% of the members who responded to the survey last fall. Thank you all for your participation in our survey.

We will be combining resources with the Congregational Church in Bartlett for Vacation Bible Study this summer. Thank you to Lori Haseltine for coordinating this.

Please share the word. Help advertise our upcoming events. These have been designed to meet the requests of our members and to bring new people to LHC. What are your suggestions for future movies and educational forums and retreats?

Our first Family Movie Night will be Fri Feb 13 at 7 pm in the Parish Hall. The movie is "Heaven is for Real." We read this book in A Book & A Prayer Book Club last year. It is a movie for all age groups and will generate a good discussion. It's a story written by a pastor in Nebraska explaining his 4 year-old son's experiences in heaven with God and Jesus during a serious abdominal surgery. Movies were suggested by 47% of the survey respondents.

A whopping 52.9% of the responses asked for religious content educational forums. Please join us for An Evening of Gaelic and God on Fri Mar 13 in the Parish Hall at 7 pm. There will be music, books, and art to preview before the PowerPoint presentation. Bring your own Guinness and Bushmills. You will be treated to a history of the Celts' culture, art and religion. There will be a discussion of the move from pagan gods to Christianity and how the two were actually blended together and still are today. And, of course, this is an excellent chance for a beautiful colorful travelogue of Ireland. I'll share some of my favorite places and experiences and I hope all who have traveled there will share their experiences too.

Look for registration forms on the table in the Parish Hall beginning in February for the Mar 21 retreat, Practicing the Art of Forgiveness. Our keynote speaker is the Rev. Holly W. Whitcomb from Kettlewood Retreats in Elm Grove, Wisconsin. The cost is $40 per person to cover the cost of the speaker and lunch. LHC was requested as the venue location for events by 64.5%.

Activities...

A Book & A Prayer Book Club

4th Monday of every month

6 pm in the Parish Hall*

(*note change in time this month!)

For February our monthly book club, A Book & A Prayer, will be reading Hot Dogs and Hamburgers: Unlocking Life's Potential by Inspiring Literacy at Any Age by Rob Shindler, a native Chicagoan. Rob was inspired as he chronicled his journey to help his son overcome a major reading deficiency through volunteering at Literacy Chicago. Here Rob learned the common misconceptions that come hand in hand with adult illiteracy and developed unconventional teaching methods to help his classes learn to read.

Did you know there are 32 million adults in the United States - that's 14% of the population - who cannot read according to the U.S. Department of Education? Adult literacy is not only an educational issue; it's a social issue that affects people of all races, cultures and walks of life across the country.

Rob Shindler believes in second chances. The Chicago-based author and attorney hopes that his book raises awareness around adult illiteracy and inspires readers to become part of the solution by helping others learn to read. Now a literacy advocate, Shindler and the United Church of Christ are partnering for Reading Changes Lives, the UCC's church-wide initiative to raise awareness about how illiteracy directly impacts a range of social justice issues.

Our meeting will be Feb 23 at 6 pm. We are thrilled to have the author join us this month and will start earlier with a potluck supper. Please consider bringing a dish to pass. All are welcome. Please bring a friend. If you need a ride, please contact me.

Christ Has No Body

Christ has no body but yours,

No hands, no feet on earth but yours,

Yours are the eyes with which he looks

Compassion on this world,

Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good,

Yours are the hands, with which he blesses all the world.

Yours are the hands,

Yours are the feet,

Yours are the eyes,

You are his body.

Teresa of Avila (1515-1582)

A Prayer for Lent

"May today there be peace within.

May you trust God that you are exactly where

you are meant to be.

May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith.

May you use those gifts that you have received,

and pass on the love that has been given to you.

May you be content knowing that you are a child of God.

Let this presence settle into our bones, and allow your soul
the freedom to sing, dance, praise, and love.

It is there for each and everyone of you."

Teresa of Ávila

I wanted to share these two poems and prayers of the Spanish mystic, Teresa of Ávila, as we approach the upcoming season of Lent in our Little Home Church. I encourage you to invite friends and come worship with the choir in anthems, hymns, and spiritual songs throughout Lent and "allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise, and love."

Bell choir rehearsals will be on February 4 and 11, at 8:15 pm in the Parish Hall.
