Pastor's message...

Keep the Light Burning

I can remember in summer church camp singing "This little light of mine I'm going to let it shine." I especially remember the fun we had with verse, "hide it under a bushel, NO! I'm going to let it shine." This is a very appropriate song for the dark days of January and especially for the church season of Epiphany.

Epiphany means a revealing of God's truth and that's exactly what happened. God gave us His son Jesus Christ as a revelation of the truth. God wants us to know just how much we are loved and that we are supposed to share that love with others. So the light of the world, Jesus, was given to us. We received it. We know it, we see it, and we got it.

Now it's up to us to pass it on and there are lots of ways for each of us to be a light to the world:

--We can tell a neighbor, a friend, a coworker about the amazing activities at Little Home Church like our Chili Cook-off on Feb. 7

--We can share stories about our worship and mission experiences here like our Pilgrim service or Christmas Eve or the mission trip to Biloxi, Mississippi

--We can volunteer to give time serving others with our outreach programs like the food pantry or the literacy project

--We can volunteer to tell our faith story during worship on Sunday morning

--We can listen to a friend share their concerns and faith questions that encourage us to respond with the honest beliefs that we have

These are just a few of the ways that we can share the light of Christ and reach out into the world. Jesus wants us to show and tell the good news of God's love and Little Home Church.

Ministry news...

Evangelism

Since November, I have featured our newest members several at a time. This month I would like to introduce you to Dawn and Chuck Sbarbaro who moved to Wayne three years ago and live on Smith Road.

The LHC has become a very special place for Dawn and Chuck for many reasons, one of which it is here that they married last August. Dawn and Chuck work for different companies but in the same building located in Schaumburg. I found it amusing when Dawn told me they met in the elevator seven years ago! Dawn is a Product Manager at Paragon International, a consulting firm that assists companies with managing their fixed assets. Chuck is a Senior Director of Contracting for Sagent Pharmaceutical Co. (Chuck's mother, Sandy Harper, also joined our church in November.)

They have two children, Amber 13, and Michael 23 who moved to Chicago after graduating from University of Iowa last year.
In their spare time and on weekends, Dawn enjoys crafts and Chuck enjoys motorcycles. So far, they haven't had time to honeymoon, however in 2015, a honeymoon is planned. The destination is yet to be determined. Dawn offered her cell phone for all our new church members which is 847.909.2385.

We are certainly blessed to have Dawn and Chuck as members of our church family, and we welcome them.

Blessings, Carol Berger

Worship & Spiritual Growth
Authors, almost authors, budding writers, legible writers!
You are all invited to help Little Home Church write a home spun Lenten devotional booklet that we will self-publish for our use in February through April 2015. Folks can write more than one devotional and scriptures will be provided for each of the 40 days of Lent as a jumping off point. But you can use your ideas, feelings, stories and faith as you write a few paragraphs. This can be a wonderful faith journey for all of us whether writers or readers. Starting in December will have a sign up sheet in the Parish Hall with the date and scripture of each day in Lent. This may sound early with Christmas not even here, but we didn't want to wait until January and only have a month to put this together. So join in! Don't be shy. Try your hand at expressing yourself. After all God already knows what you can do.

Outreach
Christmas Giving and Thanks!
86 presents were delivered to the Wayne Township General Assistance office to be distributed to the six families we adopted. They were speechless at our generosity! Thank you to those who took names off The Giving Tree. Your kindness helped brighten the Christmas of so many! 45 dinners were delivered to the Neighborhood Food Pantry as well. God loves a cheerful giver and we most certainly are a cheerful bunch!

Christian Education
Thank you all for filling out the Christian Educations surveys. When I started working with the Christian Education Ministry I had a conversation with Susi, asking her if she wanted education for Christians or Christian Education. Bottom line...you're getting both!

Sunday Bible Study will start on Feb. 8 with a "Bible 101" course. The following Sunday, Feb. 15, the group will begin studying The Parables. We will meet after church at 11 am. No preparation is necessary.

In February and March we will begin a Family Movie Night and Adult Forums. I have some ideas for movies with Christian subject matter and would also love any suggestions. Our first forum, an Evening with Gaelic and God, will be Saturday, Mar. 14 at 7 pm. Join us to hear about the Gaelic culture, history, pagan religions and the acceptance of Christianity. There may even be some good music and food.

On Mar. 21 there will be a Saturday retreat for Lent called Practicing the Art of Forgiveness. Our guest speaker that day will be Rev. Holly W. Whitcomb from Kettlewood Retreats. There will be more information on that in the future.

Moderator's update...

Council News

The Holidays have past. The tree and decorations are fading and due to come down if not done so already. January. Cold. Somewhat bleak. Not much happening after the hustle and bustle of the past several weeks. We will hear a good deal of talk about making a resolution for the coming year. What does that mean really? Will we vow the old stand-by promises to get in better physical shape, drop the weight we gained last year and then some, or stop smoking?

Might I offer a different spin on making a resolution? Perhaps this is an opportunity to ponder how the birth of Jesus relates to your life? What mission within and beyond the walls of our Sanctuary is your passion? How could you go about fulfilling it? In what ways could LHC assist you to do just that? How does this impact your personal ministry at Little Home Church? In what ways could you be involved?

At the October meeting your Council was asked to review a recommendation to change the LHC By-Law quorum requirement for decision making at Annual business meetings. Attendance at our Congregational Meetings has declined significantly the past few years. At the Junual 2014 meeting we could not officially vote to accept the slate of officers and Ministry Chairs as there was not a quorum of members present.

There was much discussion on the issue of meeting attendance. We diligently looked at all sides of the question and what message we might send whether we decided to change the By-Laws or not. Council unanimously decided to affirm our By-Laws and send a positive message. We are an active, vibrant congregation looking to a future of service and mission. LHC is blessed with many hard working folks with deep faith commitments. Yes, we have challenges to overcome but I believe as a congregation we can do just that and more! But it will require all of us to do our part.

As your Moderator, I am asking all LHC members to make a commitment to attend the Annual Congregational Budget Meeting on Sunday Feb. 1, 2015 at Little Home Church.

May the peace of Christ be with you,

Susi

Men's Group...

Fellowship, Service and Growth

Pastor David invited men from the Little Home Church and his former church, United Protestant Church in Grayslake to a Saturday morning breakfast on November 1st. (At first, I did not know about the Grayslake contingent and thought these strangers to me, at least, were new members. When I introduced myself to one of the fellows, I asked how he found LHC and he replied by GPS).

We learned that the Grayslake group had been formed several years ago. The Grayslake men get together monthly for Bible study and fellowship as well as a smaller group gathers at 6 am every Wednesday for coffee, prayer and discussion before going to work. Instead of Blessing the Hounds as we do in the Fall, they Bless the Hogs in the Spring. No, they are not farmers, several ride motorcycles. Pastor David also showed a video regarding the remarkable success of a small church in LaSalle, IL that is thriving today because the pastor has focused upon the men of that church.

On Saturday, Dec. 13th, several LHC men gathered for breakfast at the church and a discussion regarding the potential of an LHC Men's Group. Numerous ideas were offered by this enthusiastic group in keeping with the Fellowship, Service and Growth theme.

All volunteered to follow up on these ideas and report back to the group at the next LHC Men's Group breakfast at the Colonial Cafe on Main St. in St. Charles (Rt 64 & Tyler) at 9 am on Saturday, Jan. 10.

Please join us that morning and stay tuned for more Fellowship, Service and Growth from the LHC Men's Group.

Search and call...

The LHC Search and Call committee is working on the comprehensive Local Church Profile using the process developed by the UCC Conference. This document will cover every aspect of our church, including the church's fiscal profile; specific aspects of our congregational life; general information about our policies and staff; wider church relations; and characteristics of the community.

The committee met on Dec. 16 and will resume the regular meeting schedule on Jan. 5 and 27. Questions are welcome and may be directed to the following members of the Search and Call committee:

Activities...

A Book & A Prayer Book Club

4th Monday of every month

7 pm in the Parish Hall

January will find us reading and discussing "The Pilgrim's Progress," an oldie but a goodie and a nice challenge to start off the New Year. The Pilgrim's Progress is a Christian allegory written by John Bunyan first published in February, 1678. It is regarded as one of the most significant works of religious English literature. It has been translated into more than 200 languages, and has never been out of print. An enormously influential 17th century classic, universally known for its simplicity, vigor, and beauty of language, The Pilgrim's Progress remains one of the most widely read books in the English language. Let's follow Christian, as he journeys to the Celestial City, together.

The first meeting of the new year will be January 26 at 7 pm. All are welcome. Please bring a friend. If you need a ride, please contact me.
