Pastor's message...

Expectations!

We all have expectations. This time of year the air is electric with a sense of expectation promise and hope. It's our faith that stirs up this wonderful opportunity for new birth and new life. Mary and Joseph were expecting. But in both cases being pregnant and having a child were totally unexpected! Yet each one of them was obedient to the messages from God that encouraged them to accept God's will and God's plans.

We have hopes and dreams and expectations for Little Home Church. We have begun a process of re-visioning and seeking a new direction as well as embarking on a pastoral search. We recently completed a United Church of Christ assessment process called New Beginnings. That report will be shared with all of you this spring through a process of cottage meetings where we can discuss the information and recommendations of visions for our future.

Like Mary and Joseph we may face the unexpected and like Mary and Joseph we are called to be faithfully obedient to God's plan and God's will.

As we journey through Advent together full of its joyful pageantry, wonderful music and delightful eats, we can join together as community, expecting the birth of Jesus the Christ. I hope that expectation will permeate all your Christmas activities. And as you prepare for your Christmas may you be open to the unexpected window of God's grace and be willing to follow God's promptings.

A blessed Christmas to all!

Pastor David

Thank you...!

Our Stewardship Consecration Sunday Service on November 9th was a success; we have received more than 40 financial pledges and 50 ministry pledges. The majority of pledges are either new or of an increase from last year. For those who were not able to attend the service, pledge cards have been mailed and can be returned to the Church office or presented during the Offering.

Please join the spirit of "rising expectations" that has characterized our Stewardship efforts and make your pledge to the Church so we can complete our budget planning for 2015...the more we give, the more we can do.

Peace be with you,

Bob Kaska - Stewardship Ministry Chair

Ministry news...

Evangelism

We welcomed nine new members on November 16 to the Little Home Church! Last month I featured Janet and Paul Figge who rejoined the church after a 10-year absence, and the Braulick family.

This month I would like to introduce you to Sandy Harper, and her son and daughter-in-law, Dawn and Charles Sbarbaro.

Sandy, Dawn and Charles are very excited to be a part of our church family. Dawn and Charles were married at the church inAugust and live in Wayne on Smith Road.

Do you know someone who has traveled with the Ringling Bros Circus? We now have a member of the LHC who has done just that, Sandy Harper. In her younger days, Sandy was on the road for several years with Ringling Bros. and the Hoxie Brothers, the Great American Circus. During her tenure with the circus, Sandy visited and experienced every corner of our country and found this job fascinating and fun. It sounds like a job we all might dream about. Sandy has three children, a daughter living in Arizona and two sons in the Chicago area.

Besides the circus, Sandy has had other numerous employment positions throughout her life time which she also has enjoyed. Sandy has been a medical secretary for Loyola and Ravenswood hospitals, working in the pathology departments and found the work fascinating. She has been the

Administrative Coordinator for the building department in Lincolnwood, and enjoyed the many people she met along the way.

Sandy lives in South Elgin with her dog and can't wait to become involved at LHC. She has already volunteered to do anything and everything, and as we all know, an extra pair of hands is music to our ears. She enjoys being around lots of people, reading and spending time at the library, and she also enjoyed bowling for many years.

Brianna Milam and Ken Johnston also joined the church this month and they will be married on May 15, 2015 at the United Methodist Church in Roselle where her mother is a pastor. Being a "pastor's kid," Brianna moved around a lot during her childhood, mostly in Illinois. Her father is also a pastor in Wisconsin at the UCC church in Whitewater. Brianna is a graduate of North Central College and has her master's degree from St. Mary's University College in London where she earned her MBA. Brianna also spent a semester in Thailand studying international business. Presently, Brianna is employed by AWANA, which stands for 'Approved Workman are Not Ashamed," 2 Timothy, 2:15. Brianna manages their International Business and Finance Department.

Ken grew up in Oswego/Montgomery with his two brothers and as a family, they all share the love of old cars. He keeps very busy with his job, and travels all over the country wherever his expertise is needed. He is a Nuclear Power Plant technician and is employed by Masterlee, Inc. When Ken is not working, he enjoys his chocolate lab named Lilly, and biking. But his true hobby is cars, especially Mustangs. He loves going to car shows throughout the Chicago area. Brianna and Ken are busy planning their wedding, and we all wish them well as they begin a new life together.

Blessings, Carol Berger

Worship & Spiritual Growth
Authors, almost authors, budding writers, legible writers!
You are all invited to help Little Home Church write a home spun Lenten devotional booklet that we will self-publish for our use in February through April 2015. Folks can write more than one devotional and scriptures will be provided for each of the 40 days of Lent as a jumping off point. But you can use your ideas, feelings, stories and faith as you write a few paragraphs. This can be a wonderful faith journey for all of us whether writers or readers. Starting in December will have a sign up sheet in the Parish Hall with the date and scripture of each day in Lent. This may sound early with Christmas not even here, but we didn't want to wait until January and only have a month to put this together. So join in! Don't be shy. Try your hand at expressing yourself. After all God already knows what you can do.

Christmas Poinsettias
Purchase a poinsettia to help decorate our altar table for the Cantata and Christmas Eve Services. Plants are available in the traditional red, white and pink, $12 each. You may note whether it is "in memory of," or "in celebration of" a loved one. You may take your plant after one of the Christmas Eve services. Order by contacting the office: 630.584.4013 or lori@littlehomechurch.org.

Outreach
Christmas Food Baskets
We once again will be working with Neighborhood Food Pantries to provide Christmas food baskets. LHC has committed to providing 45 baskets. As in the past there will be a 'shopping list' of items required for each basket. Valeri Baldwin will have a sign-up sheet in church. Baskets are due Sat. Dec. 20 and should be dropped off at Resurrection Parish (corner of Army Trail Road & Rt. 59) between 8-9 am that day. We are a small church with huge hearts! The Food Pantry and its families are incredibly grateful!

Giving Tree
This year we have partnered with Wayne Township General Assistance office to help make Christmas a little brighter for six needy families. There are still gift tags available in the Parish Hall for gifts that need to be purchased. All the gifts should be returned to church by Sunday, Dec. 14th, wrapped, with the gift tag attached. Your generosity is heartwarming!

If you need additional information on The Giving Tree contact Lori Prang in the church office...she has been our fantastic gift tree organizer this year!

Moderator's update...

Council News

Wonderful, exciting things keep happening at Little Home Church and December is no exception. This is evident by all the information and reports found in our By The Way each month. Please take time to read the Ministry news and note the many opportunities for worship, spiritual growth, education, and fellowship.

The Ministries are currently working on their proposed budgets for the 2015 financial year. Having served as a Ministry Chair, I understand the responsibility of the task particularly when once again we project to close out the year with a deficit. This will lay heavy on their hearts and minds.

As reported last month, Council did spend the major portion of our meeting discussing our financial status and brainstorming solutions. We had a very fruitful discussion and a few ideas are being worked out for the short and long term. Our goal, reduce the 2014 deficit and work to balance the budget.

We are now in the waiting pattern for Phase I of the New Beginnings Assessment Program. On the surface it may not appear that anything is happening but be assured that Hope Partnerships and in particular Doug Pfeiffer are diligently working to finalize the analysis report from all the data that has been collected. LHC Leadership will use this report and all tools at our disposal to lead us in a Revisioning process early 2015.

Your Search and Call Committee has set up a regular meeting schedule (with a few shifts here and there due to the Holidays) and are looking to the development of the Church profile. Again I must caution that it may appear that the work is at a standstill but know that much is being done behind the scenes. As always, I am available at any time to answer questions, listen to your thoughts and ideas, hear a concern you may have.

In closing, I wish each of you a most blessed Christmas. May you find the peace, love and joy that our Savior Jesus brings.

Merry Christmas,

Susi

Chairs...

Out with the old and in with the new!

The council has approved the selection of comfortable, high-density chairs to replace our folding chairs used in the Parish Hall. We have spent many months researching the best solution to our ancient folding chairs and we believe the Community Hoop chairs will provide us with many years of comfortable service.

We are purchasing a quantity of 90 stackable chairs and two storage carts to hold them. Due to high quality and durability the cost is more than expected, so we hope donations will be offered to help cover the additional expense.

Any donations we receive toward this effort will be greatly appreciated!

Activities...

A Book & A Prayer Book Club

4th Monday of every month

7 pm in the Parish Hall

January will find us reading and discussing "The Pilgrim's Progress," an oldie but a goodie and a nice challenge to start off the New Year. The Pilgrim's Progress is a Christian allegory written by John Bunyan first published in February, 1678. It is regarded as one of the most significant works of religious English literature. It has been translated into more than 200 languages, and has never been out of print. An enormously influential 17th century classic, universally known for its simplicity, vigor, and beauty of language, The Pilgrim's Progress remains one of the most widely read books in the English language. Let's follow Christian, as he journeys to the Celestial City, together.

The first meeting of the new year will be January 26 at 7 pm. All are welcome. Please bring a friend. If you need a ride, please contact me.
