Pastor's message...

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.
(Ephesians 1:3)

God has already blessed us! Is there any doubt? We have so much to be grateful for, so much that we have been given. And each of us has received what the Bible calls, spiritual gifts, which are innate hard-wired attributes.

In our New Members Class we took a spiritual gifts inventory that helped us identify our top three gifts. Knowing what our gifts are helps us to choose activities where we can use our gifts and flourish. But that is the key, we need to use our gifts otherwise they go to waste, and we're most likely unhappy, and so is God. But when we find the place where we experience great joy in doing and giving; that is utilizing God's investment in us.

His master said to him, "Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master." (Matthew 25:21)

"Rising Expectations" is the theme of our Fall Stewardship Campaign. We chose that theme because at Little Home Church we all need to step up and be involved. Church is a participant sport. We need to be on the playing field as part of the team. It doesn't work if we're just spectators up in the bleachers.

On Sunday, November 9, Stewardship Consecration Sunday, you will receive two pledge cards. One will ask you to make a financial commitment to the ministries of Little Home Church and the other is asking you to volunteer your time in one or two of those ministries using your spiritual gifts. Being involved and working together, we will rise up as a congregation to face the challenges ahead.

When we use our gifts loving God and serving others we feel great and God is happy.

With you and God on this journey,

Pastor David

Ministry news...

Stewardship

This year our Stewardship Theme is "Rising Expectations;" we are responding to the positive changes at Little Home Church and the challenge of higher expectation.

We are asked to make both a Financial and Ministry Pledge to the Church; pledge cards will be distributed during the Stewardship Sunday Service on November 9th. The Ministry Pledge is new this year; our goal is to have all of our Members participate in the Ministry of the Church and to identify which one calls to you.

Make a special effort to attend our Consecration Sunday service and the fellowship celebration lunch in the Parish Hall that will follow. Please give prayerful consideration of your Pledge and consider how your financial resources and ministry involvement can benefit our Church.

Pledge cards will be mailed to those who cannot attend the service.

Stewardship Sunday Service in 4 Easy Steps...

1. Fill out Stewardship Pledge card

2. Fill out Ministry Pledge card

3. Pledge Consecration

4. Celebration lunch...!

Evangelism

We are very excited to welcome New Members to the LHC. Over the next two months in BTW, I will feature all of our new members.

First of all, we welcome back Janet and Paul Figge after being away from LHC for 10 years. Janet and Paul will be rejoining the church. Living in Clarkston, MI for a portion of the 10 years, they were members of a Congregational Church. The Figge's moved back to St. Charles via Denville, New Jersey, where they could be closer to family. Janet works from home for EY, the public accounting firm, and Paul commutes back to New Jersey on a regular basis for a Swedish company, Sandvik, a manufacturing tooling company. They have two children, Matthew and Megan.  Matthew is married and living in Orlando and Megan is engaged, getting married at LHC in 2015. We are so pleased to have them worship with us again!

Others who will be joining the church on New Member Sunday, November 16 are Barb and Chip Braulick, Brianna Milam, Dawn and Charles Sbarbaro, and Sandy Harper.

Barb and Chip Braulick are coming to LHC from Baker Memorial and we are thrilled they found their spiritual home with us. Barb was raised outside of Philadelphia and Chip grew up in Westin, Connecticut. They met during college, Barb graduating from Cedar Crest College, and Chip, a graduate of Lehigh University. They have two girls, Hanna and Gretchen, attending Columbia College in Chicago. Barb is a Dental Assistant with the practice of Dickens, Mason & Kissell in St. Charles, and Chip commutes weekly to Long Island, New York where he is employed with CBC America, a commercial flooring company. Their entire family enjoys and appreciates the Fine Arts and they bring to LHC a lot of talent. We welcome with great enthusiasm the Braulick family!

Next month I will feature our other new members. Please join us for worship on November 16 and welcome our new members.

Blessings, Carol Berger

Hanging of the Greens
Hard to believe we're talking about Christmas already but the 1st Sunday in Advent is Nov. 30. Please join us after worship that day for our traditional Hanging of the Greens, where we decorate LHC for Christmas! As always, a potluck lunch will follow. We hope you'll join us.

Facilities
Work Day Warriors!
Thank you to all who spent a beautiful October Saturday mostly inside the sanctuary and Parish Hall. We washed a thousand windows, organized and cleaned the storage room and sanctuary basement, scrubbed walls and woodwork, cleaned light fixtures, appliances, cabinets, vents, changed light bulbs and repaired a light fixture. We never made it over to the Guild House, so watch for another
opportunity to get involved with your Facilities ministry.

Outreach
Thanksgiving Food Baskets
We once again will be working with Neighborhood Food Pantries to provide Thanksgiving food baskets. LHC has committed to providing 45 baskets. As in the past there will be a 'shopping list' of items required for each basket. Valeri Baldwin will have a sign-up sheet in church. The baskets are due Sat. Nov. 22 and should be dropped off at Resurrection Parish (corner of Army Trail Road & Rt. 59) between 8-9 am that day.

Giving Tree
This year we have partnered with Wayne Township to help make Christmas a little brighter for some of their needy families. We will be adopting some families and providing gifts on their Christmas wish list. Look for the Giving Tree in the Parish Hall in the near future!

Moderator's Update...

Financial Update

As we approach the close of the 2014 fiscal year, as predicted at our Janual meeting, LHC is operating with a budget deficit. However, the picture is not all doom and gloom. LHC has many positive, uplifting things happening. We have a great Interim Pastor. Worship attendance is trending upward. Our Ministries and Committees are functioning at top performance (though each could use a few more folks in their ranks). Bible study and the Book Club are running smoothly. We have Confirmation and New Member Classes underway. And per our treasurer's monthly report, the past few months have seen a upswing in giving, we are ahead of plan when looking at a three year average, and the Ministries have under spent somewhat.

But operating at a deficit is serious business. Each month Council reviews the budget but at the November meeting we will dedicate efforts to discuss our financial status and brainstorm ways to reduce the deficit. Our goal is to work towards a balanced budget. Do you have thoughts and ideas to put out there? Please contact me, Bob Kaska Stewardship Chair or any Council member and share your ideas.

Personnel Relations Committee

The Personnel Relations Committee has been at work updating the role and responsibilities of the committee as per our By Laws. This document revision has been approved by Council. Next steps include updating job descriptions for the staff, revising the 1998 LHC Personnel System document, and creation of an Employee Manual.

Association Meeting

Your Pastor and past, current and future Moderators attended a joint fall meeting of the Chicago Metropolitan and Fox Valley Associations October 18th at The Church of the Good Shepherd in Chicago. The worship was exciting and the music inspiring as the Huston-Tillotson University Choir from Austin, Texas led us in song. We each attended a different "energizer" or workshop on Stewardship, Non-traditional Families in Church, Ecological Justice, and Building Spiritual Life Teams.

Search and Call

Your Search and Call Committee held its first meeting October 16. Rev. Jonathan Knight, Association minister and our adviser, was present to introduce us to the UCC search process. We received the Manual that will walk us through the process step-by-step, watched a PowerPoint presentation and discussed how to proceed. The first task is the development of a LHC Church profile. The profile is an extremely comprehensive document that will require extensive research and information gathering. It will include information about our congregation, financial picture, the community and its needs, how we see ourselves serving our community, our strengths and our challenges. At some point you as a congregation member will be asked to participate in this information gathering. This is an important task as this document will define who we are to potential candidates for our next settled Pastor. Once the profile documents are completed, they will be forwarded to Rev. Knight and LHC will be posted on the National Ministry Opportunities website.

Please support this group and keep them in your prayers.

New Beginnings

Phase I of the New Beginnings Program, a pre-visioning process, has gotten underway. Data has been collected about our membership, financial status, our buildings and present day activity and forwarded to Doug Pfeiffer from Hope Partnership. Doug has also obtained various data and information from the Association and visited our website.

On Thursday, October 30 several meetings took place between Doug Pfeiffer, New Beginnings assessor; Rev. Jonathan Knight; and LHC lay leaders. A building/grounds tour, review of our financial reports and a windshield tour of the community were held in the afternoon. The Pastor, Moderator, Doug and Rev. Knight met for a dinner meeting discussion. Then the evening concluded with an "Appreciative Inquiry Session" with a group of leaders and congregation participants. This meeting gathered even more information about LHC, the congregation and our ministry.

So what's next? Phase I culminates in the analysis of the information and development of a comprehensive report for our review. We can expect our report sometime in December. Phase II is scheduled for February and involves leader training programs. Phase III will be initiated after the training and will require the participation of the entire congregation in a decision-making and action-taking process.

Exciting things are happening at LHC! Please feel free to contact me at any time with questions, comments or concerns.

Shalom,

Susi Winquist, Moderator

Activities...

A Book & A Prayer Book Club

4th Monday of every month

7 pm in the Parish Hall

The LHC Readers will end the year with a family appropriate story AND movie!

Our last meeting of the year will be on Monday, December 1 (Note date change from 11/24 to 12/1.) This is a story for the entire family and we'll discuss "The Story of the Other Wise Man" which is a short novella by Henry Van Dyke, initially published in 1895. Henry Van Dyke was a preacher, university professor, diplomat, poet, translator, and author of many inspirational writings. As a Christmas bonus we'll watch the black and white movie "The Story of the Other Wise Man" presented by GE Theater and introduced by Ronald Reagan and family. (Aired on Christmas Night, 1960)

Please join us for some Christmas fun at 7 pm in the Parish Hall as we celebrate and share this beautiful and inspirational story. Bring a friend and remember "Jesus is the Reason for the Season!"

Remember NO meeting in November. Join us December 1 instead!

tutors needed...

Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley is looking for people to help tutor adults who are looking to learn to read, write and speak English. Literacy volunteers literally change the lives of their adult neighbors by helping them understand English more effectively. Our volunteers do not need to know a second language or have an education in background to help. Tutoring locations are located throughout the St. Charles, Batavia and Geneva areas. It is only an hour a week.
