Worship in the garden...

Welcome back! Join us for Christian Education Sunday on September 7, 9:30 am for a worship service in our beautiful courtyard garden. This will be a special inter-generational service with scripture, music and communion for all ages.

Pastors message...

Back in the 1950s everyone came to church. In the 1960s churches were filled; people just came. It was a cultural norm. Today the question I hear the most often is how can we get people to come to church? That's because Churches are shrinking, not just our church but all churches in the U.S. are experiencing some decline.

The best answer I have heard is that the culture has changed significantly but the church has not. Technology, particularly in the area of communication has put today's world more in touch with each other, with more information and on a global scale. There are other differences in our culture between the 50s and now e.g. transportation; family groupings; medical health advances. But there are challenges we still have such as building a lasting peace between nations and eliminating poverty in our own communities.

So how do we bring people to Little Home Church, particularly young families that every church wants?

Maybe there is a different question we should be asking. Instead of how do we get folks to come here to our style and place of church; how do we go to them? If we go to the people around us (young families and young adults included) and find out what they need from church, we might get some clues as to how God wants us to reach this new culture/generation. What are their spiritual hungers? What excites them and gives them a sense of purpose? We are in an age of mission: unchurched folks are the mission field and we are the missionaries!

These are some of the questions we are asking as we seek to understand how we can follow Christ in this new day and age. How can we be a vital and vibrant congregation, spiritually alive and socially relevant? We are beginning to shape a new vision of what it means to be Little Home Church. There is a future for LHC and we will discover it with God's help.

Walking with you on this journey,

Pastor David

Evangelism
The Evangelism Ministry continues to reach out to the community and all interested visitors. I am very excited because Pastor David has agreed to, and will be conducting, Membership Classes this fall. They will be held after worship service on October 12 and 19 as well as November 2. We will be having our New Members Sunday on November 16. Please contact Carol Berger at 630.363.8982 if you know of someone who might be interested in joining our church.

It was very exciting to see so many people in church on Sunday, Aug. 24. We had lots of new people and it warms my heart to see our church welcome our visitors, and hopefully they too, will experience the friendly and spiritual congregation that we have. Again, please pass along to Pastor David or myself anyone who might want a phone call, visit, and/or a conversation to learn more about the LHC. We are always available.

The Blessing of the Hounds on September 28 is always
ms.hancock
an opportunity to welcome many visitors. If you know of someone
who will be coming, please give me a heads-up so I can make a special effort to welcome them.

Again, please pass along to interested individuals information about our membership classes. Even if they are not sure they want to join the church, they might find the classes informative about our church, what we are all about, and what the UCC means to us.

Blessings, Carol Berger

Outreach
The Neighborhood Food Pantry has put out a plea for diapers...size 3, 4 & 5. This is an item that is not covered under food stamps a family might receive. Please be generous and pick up a package or two when you're out and then drop them off here at church. We'll make sure they get to the food pantry. Thanks for your kindness.

Facilities   workdays.type
The Facilities Ministry is planning another Work Day on October 25 from 8 am - 2 pm. These work days are always productive with the help of many hands! There are big jobs and small jobs. Come for an hour, or come for the day. Join us and we will find a job that fits you.

Council news...

"Churches grow by the power of God through the skilled efforts of people."  - Rick Warren

Welcome

Colleen Odegaard has volunteered to serve on the Personnel Relations Committee. This group is charged with the task to oversee personnel activity according to Church policy; conduct performance reviews; and engage in activities to maintain a healthy work environment. Thank you Colleen!

PowerPoint presentation

The Council watched a presentation titled "Out of Ashes, the rebuilding of a church." The story told us how St. Paul's UCC of Monee, IL moved from a church in crisis, conflict and decline to a thriving, growing church doing God's mission. We followed the presentation with a short discussion acknowledging the vast differences between LHC and St. Paul's physical and emotional climate and looking more to process and positive outcomes. Truly a story of hope relating what can happen when we heed the guidance of the Spirit.

Financial update

Each month Art Zwemke prepares a state of the church financial statement for the Council meeting. We are charged with being good stewards of God's gifts in the form of your offerings and tithes. As you are aware, the congregation approved a deficit budget at the Janual meeting. At this point, there is a general shortfall in pledge giving. Please take time to review your gifts to LHC.

Dixon property SOLD!

Leslie Ebersole presented us with six different offers for the property in the past few weeks. After careful review and consideration we accepted an offer for $90,500. Details were  managed through our point person, Art Zwemke and his wife, Gail acted on our behalf in the legal matters. An expeditious closing was scheduled and the sale was completed. Thank you all for the hard work required to get the property ready for market and the very quick sale itself.

"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven"   Ecclesiastes 3:1

Where are we now?

At the time of this publication we are approximately eight weeks into our interim time. Seemingly it feels much longer but let us keep in mind that we had almost six months from announcement to the retirement of Pastor Ron. July 1st marked the beginning of our interim period and the developmental tasks associated with the process. Part of the interim process involves looking at who we are as a church and assessing, perhaps reassessing, our mission as God's church. In that vein, Council is looking at various tools available that might be used to accomplish the task. Pastor David and seven Council members attended a presentation to learn about a UCC program called New Beginnings. We are also looking at Center for Progressive Renewal and various programs that may be appropriate for our needs at this time.

Currently reading and recommend: "The Purpose Driven Church" by Rick Warren and "When 'Spiritual But Not Religious' is Not Enough" by Lillian Daniel.

So what's up with the Pastor Search?

As outlined in the LHC By-Laws the Nominating Committee is comprised of the current Moderator: Susi Winquist; past Moderator: Kathy Haben; Moderator-elect: Alex Kentfield; and a congregation member: Kay Brynelsen.

That being said, your Nominating Committee is currently accepting nominations for the Search and Call Committee. A team of seven congregation members is being formed to work the process for calling a settled Pastor for Little Home Church. We are looking for individuals who possess:

  • a passionate commitment to Christ's church
  • a positive attitude
  • an open heart and mind
  • integrity and respect for others and differing opinions
  • the ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • a capacity to listen, discuss and come to a consensus.

Additionally, the expectation is that:

  • one is an active member/supporter of the church
  • attends worship on a regular basis
  • is a financial contributor
  • makes serving on the Search Committee a high priority

Much is asked of those who serve but the experience offers opportunities for spiritual growth and will prove to be rewarding as you help form the future of our Lord's mission at Little Home Church.

If you have an interest to be a member of the Search Committee or would like to nominate someone please contact me at 630.484.5908; email sfwchargern@yahoo.com; or see me at Fellowship. Please keep in mind that not all folks who come forward or who are nominated can be chosen.

Next Council meeting: September 9, 2014 at 7 pm. All are welcome!

Invite a friend or neighbor to Sunday Service or a fellowship event.

A Book & A Prayer Book Club

4th Monday of every month

7 pm in the Parish Hall

Our next book sounds amazing! Won't you join us on September 22 as we discuss "Desire of the Everlasting Hills: The World Before and After Jesus" by Thomas Cahill. The book was recommended to LHC readers by Sandy Antonelli.

This historical narrative ponders how an obscure rabbi from a backwater of the Roman Empire comes to be the central figure in Western Civilization? Did his influence in fact change the world? These are the questions Thomas Cahill addresses in his subtle and engaging investigation into the life and times of Jesus. Cahill shows us Jesus from His birth to His execution through the eyes of those who knew Him and in the contest of His time--a time when the Jews were struggling to maintain their beliefs under overlords who impose their worldview on their subjects, here is Jesus the loving friend, itinerant preacher, and quiet revolutionary, whose words and actions inspired His followers to journey throughout the Roman world and speak the truth He instilled--in the face of the greatest defeat: Jesus' crucifixion as a common criminal. Daring, provocative, and stunningly original, Cahill's interpretation will both delight and surprise.

All are welcome! Bring a friend!

No preparation is necessary. We have guidebooks to help each participant. The group meets Wednesday mornings at 10 am in Pastor David's office.
