Pastor's message...
Eugene Ionesco, founder of the theater of the absurd, opened the Salzburg Festival in 1972 with the remark: "People are going around in circles in the cage of this planet, because they have forgotten they can lookup into the sky. Because all we want is to live, it has become impossible for us to live. Just look around you."
Christian theologians have always warned the faithful of the dangers of looking only at the horizontal. All one finds there are wars, greediness, human depravity, a deteriorating landscape, and an inescapable impression of being confined in a meaningless midnight from which there is no exit.
But when one looks up, infinity beckons. The night stars become a host of guardian angels. The drifting clouds, with their promise of rain, carry cleansing, refreshment, and coolness to all things on earth. And from far beyond the furthest reaches of the sun, comes an ineffable sense of a personal God who is tirelessly working to see that, in the end, "all things work together for good." (Romans 8:28)
Maybe all of us ought to spend less time looking around for the ways in which we can criticize others for the way they are or the ways in which we perceive they affect our lives. Maybe we should spend less time looking for the meaning of our own lives and more time looking up to perceive the love of God for all persons even when they themselves don't accept it. Can we grow to see life around us through the eyes of Christ, whose love and acceptance includes all and where love acts to perfect us in our lives? Let us ponder this perspective this Fall.
May God Bless,

Hope to see you September 23 at 7 pm in the Parish Hall. Bring a friend and share in Christian Fellowship as we discuss Sacred Hearts.
Choir
When singing is truly heartfelt
"As choir singers harmonize, their breathing and heartbeats synchronize in time with the music - creating a rewarding feeling of oneness." That's the conclusion of a new study by Swedish researchers, who strapped heart-rate monitors on 15 young choral singers. The singers were asked to perform three exercises: humming, singing a popular national hymn, and chanting a mantra. Researchers found that the pulses of the singers increased and decreased together as the music's tempo changed. When the songs required the singers to breathe in unison, their heartbeats were especially aligned. The controlled breathing that singing demands also seems to have a calming influence on singers. "Songs with long phrases achieve the same effects as breathing exercises in yoga," Study author Bjorn Vickhoff of the University of Gothenburg tells The Daily Telegraph (U.K.). "In other words, through song we can exercise a certain control over mental states." The lungs and the heart communicate with the brain via the vagus nerve, which also helps regulate emotion. Vickhoff says that link could explain why group singing strengthens solidarity, not just in choirs but among football fans and work crews. "When you're singing together," he says, "you are synchronizing with other people, and harmonizing your hearts."
So why not join the Adult Choir and get in shape? Rehearsals will start on Wednesday night, September 4th at 7pm. We end rehearsal by 8:15-8:30 pm. Freshman in high school and older are invited. Our first Sunday to sing will be September 8th.
Children's Bell Choir and Sunday School Music will begin on Sunday, September 8th. The bells will be set up on the stage and we can practice every week. We will also do some singing.
Finally, Adult Bell Choir will rehearse every other Wednesday night starting at 8:15 -9 pm. Our first rehearsal will be September 11th.

Members-at-large...
We would like to introduce ourselves, Louise Aughnay and Kathleen Sullivan Kaska, your Church Council Members-at-Large. Officially, as stated in the LHC By-Laws, "The role of the at-large member is to represent the congregation, bringing a viewpoint to Council discussions that does not speak from a particular ministry's point of view. The at-large member specifically receives concerns from the congregation and presents the concerns at Council meetings."
We invite you to contact us with any questions, suggestions, or concerns to share with the Council, or just to share your thoughts about Church activities and issues. We will honor your point of view and
respect your privacy. First and foremost, we are your spokespeople. It is our important role to represent you, as Council decisions greatly affect the congregation.

Open and Affirming...
ONA: The Statement, the Vote and the Future
by Anne Bouchard
The past year has been a time of discernment, discussion and prayer, as the congregation considered what is meant by Open and Affirming, or ONA. The final step in the process is to draft and vote on an ONA statement, which is unique to each congregation. At the Junual congregational meeting, a draft ONA statement was presented. At that meeting, the congregational consensus was to complete the ONA process by the fall of 2013. To that end, the ONA Exploratory Committee recommended to the Church Council that the Statement be put to a congregational vote, and the recommendation was accepted at the August Council meeting.
Therefore, the Church Council of the Little Home Church by the Wayside, UCC, offers the following ONA Statement for a decision on adoption by the membership:
"The Little Home Church by the Wayside, UCC, is an Open and Affirming congregation. We accept, embrace and affirm the dignity and worth of every person, as we are all created in God's image. Persons of every race, ethnic background, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, physical or mental ability, size and weight, socioeconomic background, marital status and faith background are welcome to share in the life, leadership, ministry, fellowship, worship, sacraments, responsibilities, and blessings of participation in our congregation.
The Vision for the Little Home Church is, 'Celebrating and Sharing God's Love in Christ.' In our individual faith journeys and in our congregational efforts to live out our Vision, we strive for justice and equality for all of God's children. Wherever you are on life's journey, you are welcome here."
Each member is entitled to one vote. Per our By-laws, adoption of this ONA Statement requires a simple majority of a quorum, which is further defined as 20% of the membership. Thus, of our 246 members, a minimum of 49 members must respond. Once the quorum is met, a simple majority will decide if the Statement is adopted or not.
On September 9, 2013, ballots will be mailed to every member, according to the address on file with the church office. Completed ballots can be delivered or mailed to the church office, but all ballots must be returned or postmarked by September 30, 2013. Ballots will be counted at the Church Council meeting on October 8, 2013, and the results will be announced in church on Sunday, October 13.
At the August Council meeting, two comments were made that served as codas to the ONA process. In response to a discussion about future plans should ONA pass, Treasurer Art Zwemke suggested that the ONA designation is somewhat like an "enabling ordinance." It creates the atmosphere in which future action can take place, but it doesn't specify what that action will be. The second interesting point involved our By-laws. Susi Winquist, our Moderator Elect, mentioned that she had been rereading the By-laws, and she noted this pertinent passage in Section C of Article IV. Faith and Covenant:
"...We covenant among ourselves and with God to make a difference in the lives of others who experience injustice and violence in our nation and the world. Affirming Christ's commandment to love one another, we pledge our means, minds, hands and hearts to this endeavor."
The ONA process has generated much energy, discussion, thoughts, and prayer. As we consider the ONA Statement and cast our votes, we will complete the process. I hope you will attend worship on October 13 to learn of the results.

Dear Pastor &
Little Home Church:
We greet you in the miraculous name of Jesus Christ. We the St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church would like to take this time to thank you for the choir robes you donated to our choir.
We don't take it lightly that God put us on your hearts and minds and we realize there are many churches in the area yet we were the ones to receive this blessing.
We thank you in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost.
Gratefully yours,
Rev. Charles A. Ramsey
