Pastor's message... The most familiar drama in the world is the Christmas pageant. Most of us have participated in this play in one way or another. Some of us have worked with the staging - rough boards, hay, or a crude manger. Some of us have played the part of Joseph, Mary, Baby Jesus, a shepherd, a wise man, or an angel. Many of us a have brought old clothing, a bathrobe, angels' wings, a crown, or a costume. Others of us have connected the star or lighted the manager. But whether we have played a special role or have sung in the choir or have laid a gift at the manger, most of us have participated in the Christmas drama.
It is not only a familiar drama, it is a simple drama. It can be put on by children, youth and adults. It can be simple but profound, fascinating but appealing, imaginative but penetratingly powerful. No matter how many times we see it, it never loses its appeal to the human heart. It is a pageant to be pondered. Luke makes this point in his interesting gospel. He tells us that Mary and Joseph went to Bethlehem to be taxed, and that Mary gave birth to her firstborn. He tells us about the shepherds, the song of the angels, the trip to Bethlehem by the shepherds. Then he focuses our attention on Mary and says, "Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart" (Luke 2:19). Like Mary, we keep all these things about Christmas and ponder them. The word ponder means to meditate, to muse, or to ruminate. It is a going over of something repeatedly in our minds. It is a careful weighing of variables and alternatives. "I Wonder as I Wander," an Appalachian Carol collected by John Jacob Niles, expresses the thought this way: I wonder as I wander out under the sky, How Jesus the Savior did come for to die For poor on'ry people like you and like I, I wonder as I wander, out under the sky. The nativity is an event to be pondered over and over again. I never see the Christmas story dramatized but that I wonder about God. God is totally dependable, but totally unpredictable. Nowhere is this more clearly demonstrated than in the drama of Bethlehem. When I ponder the nativity, I also think of the importance of unimportant people. Jesus said, "Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" (Matt. 5:3). The poor in spirit are the teachable, those who are receptive to the purposes of God. It is humility of spirit that opens the gates to the kingdom of heaven. We recall Abraham Lincoln's dream in which someone said of the President, "He is a common-looking man." Lincoln replied, "Common-looking people are the best in the world: that is the reason the Lord, makes so many of them." The glory of Christmas is that it glorifies the commonplace. It gives people who are often treated as things dignity and value to know that they are the children of God. Christmas gives respect to those who have no respect. It makes those of us who feel that we do not matter to society know that we matter to God. It lets us know that even though we are worthless to the world we are worthwhile to God. To those who have no life, God gives us eternal life. Another verse of "O Little Town of Bethlehem" says it for us: How silently, how silently the wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of His heaven. No ear may hear His coming, but in the world of sin, Where meek souls will receive Him still, the dear Christ enters in. The idea is that God elevates the commonplace to a position of importance. God does not come to tower over us, but to dwell within us. This faith, to be pondered is not merely isolated spurts of believing this or that, but it is a long-term confidence in the dependability of God, and in the eternal character of love and beauty. Dr. George MacDonald told of a fox hunt in which the hounds pursued their prey until he climbed to a high ledge overlooking the valley below. As the hounds noisily followed his trail up the steep mountainside, there in the beaming sun, on the ledge just outside his den, sat the great red fox quietly licking a paw. Dr. MacDonald made the point: If you have a sure refuge into which you know you can go, the noisy braying of the hounds of life really doesn't worry you much. God surprises us by speaking to us in unexpected ways, in ordinary situations, and in unattractive places. Think of all the times that God has spoken to you. Then ponder anew what the Almighty can do! Have a wonderful Christmas Season! |

We are grateful for her and all she does!

| Open and Affirming...
Next Congregational discussion: Sunday, January 13, 11 am
Update: Our third Open and Affirming (ONA) congregational discussion took place on the 11th of November when we we met in the Parish Hall to hear from members of two local ONA churches: Cate Brady from First Congregational in Glen Ellyn and Gary Gephart from St. John in Arlington Heights. About thirty people were present. Cate and Gary spoke about their experiences with the ONA process and responded to questions and comments from the group. Topics covered included the genesis of the process at each church, amount of time spent on the ONA process, the activities and programs utilized by each church, and a discussion of elements deemed relevant, including sexual orientation, family, terminology, theological questions, ministry to those outside of the church, and alternative viewpoints. Both churches had lost a few members as a result of ONA, but both churches are now growing. Cate and Gary talked about their church's ONA statements, both of which included groups other than those related to sexual identity and orientation. Gay marriage was also discussed. Cate said that the ministers at her church had performed gay marriages before the church became ONA and she did not think it would be an issue for discussion now. Gary said they did not decide about gay marriage until after they became ONA and a couple asked to be married. The church treated it as they would with any new decision and referred it to the relevant ministry, in this case their spiritual life ministry. They decided that since they had become ONA, it felt right that gay marriage would be allowed.
Since December is so full, our next meeting will probably be on January 13. Details to follow!
by Anne Bouchard
Editor note: To clarify, gay marriage is not legal in the State of Illinois, but civil unions are recognized by the State.
