Live Broadcast and Skanner Newspaper Breakfast to Honor Martin Luther King, Jr.

Please join KBOO at the annual Skanner Foundation breakfast to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. and the observance of his birthday, Monday, Jan. 19, 2015, from 8:30 am -10:30 a.m. at the Oregon Convention Center, 777 NE Martin Luther King Junior Blvd., in Portland. Keynote speaker is the Rev. Benjamin Chavis, Executive Director of the National Newspaper Publishers Association and a former assistant to the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

I am also happy to announce that KBOO added 100 new members in the month of December and that over 270 have joined since October 1st. We are looking to recruit and welcome 500 new members this fiscal year, which ends September 30th, and we are over half way there. Alan Lomax Birthday Special Programming, Don't miss it!

 

Alan Loalan_lomaxmax was one of the great American field collectors of folk music of the 20th century, and this Jan 30th KBOO celebrates the Alan Lomax Centennial! We'll have 13 hours of programming, beginning Jan 30th at 8pm and ending at 9am on January 31st, the 100th anniversary of his birth in Austin, Texas.

We'll  be playing old radio shows and interviews with Alan Lomax, as well as the wide array of field recordings from the U.S. South, the Caribbean, Europe, and North Africa. Guest DJs include Eric Isaacson from Mississippi Records, DJ Highway 7, and KBOO regular Erin Yanke and more.

Homeless Bill of Rights 

 

The Homeless Bill of Rights, a KBOO-endorsed campaign, will hold coordinated rallies in cities across the region tying in the message of Dr. King and the call for an end to criminalizing people who are houseless.   

 

Please join us in Portland, Wednesday, January 21st at 9am at City Hall for a rally and presentations to City Council at 9:30.  We will then march together to Sisters Of The Road (133 NW Sixth Avenue) for gumbo and presentations.  

 

Martin Luther King's, Jr's message of justice is as important now as ever. Let us ensure that his messages for racial and class justice shine through our work every day of the year and we look forward to celebrating and struggling toward justice with you!
