Greetings!

It's so sad, tragic, all the children dying. Families are grieving, looking for answers; what can be done about this epidemic that is killing over 60 people each and every single day and has overtaken automobile related accidents as the leading cause of accidental death and kills more people than all illegal drugs?

I invite you to join this discussion, come over to my blog, send this email newsletter to a friend. Help spread the word about this other tragedy: prescription drug abuse in our country, where we have five percent of the world's population and consume ninety-nine percent of the world's prescription opiates.

Save the date: Rally at the California State Capitol in Sacramento 3/11, to

1) Celebrate that March will have been designated as "Prescription Drug Abuse Awareness Month."
2) Show support for legislation that's being introduced related to prescription drug abuse.
3) Show the personal face of this epidemic.
4) Conduct a press conference with short presentations by multiple individuals representing stakeholder groups that will educate the public.
5) Build awareness.

More information about this event will be available at ncapda.org

Best regards,

60 Children Killed Today

School shooting kills 20, Drug overdose kills 60: Two tragedies, Unequal responses

As of November 30, 2012, Sandy Hook Elementary School had 456 children enrolled in kindergarten through fourth grade. On Dec. 14, 20 children and six adult staff members died at that school, victims of a deranged 20-year old with a deadly weapon. There have been eight school shootings in the US since the start of 2013, resulting in the deaths of five more and the injury of 10 more.

The public outcry in the aftermath of this horrific tragedy has resulted in a media barrage as well as drive for legislative action extensively covered on the news and in news shows. I noticed something in this attention and outrage, and I'm not alone.

Much attention is being paid to the system of manufacturing, advertising, distribution, monitoring of weapons when every single day before noon more people in our country are killed because of the broken system of manufacturing, advertising, distribution, and monitoring of prescription drugs. More die every single day as a result of prescription drug abuse than were killed in all the days since 2010 in school shootings.

These statistics suggest that it would take fewer than eight days for prescription drugs to claim the lives of 456 people, the entire population of Sandy Hook Elementary School. Where is the outrage? Where is the media coverage?

These deadly drugs are killing our children at a rate that is more than double the loss of life at Sandy Hook every single day of the year! Each one is someone's baby. Read More

Brandon Update

portrait of Brandon

Did you see us on Huff Po Live? Brandon is more committed to his sobriety and to the importance of what I'm doing to spread the word after our appearance with a very confrontational "expert" on Huffington Post Live.

What that "expert" failed to discern was the difference between a quickie rehab and a long term rehab that teaches skills to the inpatients. Brandon uses those skills every day of his life now and is defensive of his treatment.

Extended in-patient treatment has worked so far for Brandon, thankfully. And we are very proud of him every day for his commitment to staying off drugs.
