Rehab: Who can you trust?

Rehab.

Who can you trust? I mean, who can you trust to take your opiate addicted skeletal wasteland of a child, the fruit of your loins, the barely human shell of the being you put so many years of energy and love into, and make them well again? Is it a crap shoot?

Greetings!

This issue of Rx Addict Action focuses on recovery and rehabilitation because I found myself writing letters and issuing statements this month in support of the rehab center that worked for our family. I have never received commission from that center. I have never been compelled to convert to a different religion because of that center.

But it turns out that the topic of rehab is almost as complicated as the issue of prescription drug abuse itself. Just as there are different addicts, there are different rehabs. And regardless, success rates for all of them are abysmal.

Wouldn't it be great to have more prevention in place? Please join me in my efforts to put an end to this epidemic of prescription drug abuse that is claiming the lives of our children. Visit my website, www.rxdrugaddict.com, and tell your friends about it.

Best regards,

Types of Rehab: a biased look

There are long term programs and there are short term programs. There are programs that rely on turning over control to a higher power and programs that encourage addicts to find power within themselves.

There are programs that trade addictions, Methadone for heroin, Suboxone for Oxy. Lines form around the block for those who march to the methadone clinic as their daily ritual because they are treating drug addiction with . . . well . . . drug addiction.

Some will never know sobriety and that may be a fact which is unavoidable but perhaps they were never given the opportunity to try to go completely off drugs as a remedy for addiction. A good number of patients of drug substitute treatment trade their substitutes for the real thing, or they abuse them the same way they abused the other.

Some drug treatment programs are more holistic, and I would argue, have the potential to be more successful.

Brandon Update

portrait of Brandon

Brandon will celebrate 2 years clean on 9-19-12. He has a full time job and lives on his own in a place with 2 roommates. Not only does he work out daily, he has taken up rock climbing and loves it.

In the wake of the recent public criticism, I talked to Brandon about his Narconon treatment. He says although some of the teachings are L Ron Hubbard material, he feels like they were sensible tools he needed to learn to navigate through life. During treatment he never felt pressured to join Scientology and instead felt they allowed everyone to practice their own religious beliefs or none at all if that was the students inclination. He told me he believes Narconon is a secular treatment center, especially when compared to AA or NA meetings which always include praying to God.

Recently, our sons invited me and my wife to an open mic jam session at a local establishment. It was great to see a bunch of young musicians play together, many of whom just met that night. To my surprise, during the course of the night, we were approached by about ten of the youths who had all read my book. They wanted to shake my hand, and some hugged me thanking me for telling our story. Many of them told me they had battled RX addiction. It was great to be there with both of my sons.

I am forever grateful for what Narconon's professional treatment did for my son. My son learned how to handle his addiction, live in a world filled with drugs and face the demons that once consumed him.
