Featured Article This month, Erin Marie Daly at OxyWatchdog.com featured me as an Oxycontin activist with an interview on her blog. You should check it out here.
One of the exchanges we had went like this:
Oxy Watchdog: 'What are your thoughts on the role of the pharmaceutical industry and the rising rates of prescription drug addiction?'
BD: 'The makers of OxyContin have to know that well over 50 percent of their drug is hitting the streets. The pill is selling great, and they want to act like everything's fine.
Purdue's pamphlet on OxyContin is four pages long and actually says that the proper way to dispose of unused Oxy is to flush it down the toilet. If they write it down that way, they don't have to come up with a plan to recapture the unused drugs. They've literally flushed their problem down the toilet. It's really comical that they would have the guts to do this. They'll just change the formula, introduce a drug with a different name, and continue making money.'"
I wanted to talk about this a bit more. You may think I'm being a bit hard on Big Pharm. After all, haven't we all thanked them at one time or another? Whether it was after my wife's back surgery, or that time I broke my rib, or when Aunt Mary was going through stage 4 cancer. But check this out:

Greetings!
When my son was arrested for dealing oxy, he was spending $1000 a day on his own habit. I did what I felt I needed to do to keep him out of prison and get him into treatment for his addiction. Now, I'm working to do whatever it takes to raise awareness of this epidemic of prescription drug abuse and provide support to other families of addicts. You are not alone!
I hope you find this newsletter interesting and click on the links to learn as much as you can about the subject. We're all in this together. The addicts are among us.
Best wishes,
Brad www.rxdrugaddict.com

Drug deaths now outnumber car deaths!
Journalist Lisa Girion, in this LA Times article revealed this startling statistic:
A Times analysis of government data has found that, propelled by an increase in prescription narcotic overdoses, drug deaths now outnumber traffic fatalities in the United States. Now if this doesn't make people stand up and take notice of the rx drug addiction epidemic, I don't know what will!

Brandon Update
Brandon is doing fantastic. Still 6'2", now 190lbs of muscle. He works as a waiter and his biggest desire is to just fit back into normal life and not be defined by being an ex-addict. He has been helpful in many ways with regards to doing a couple of interviews, allowing the video of him in withdrawals to be aired as part of a Fox 40 interview (now up on my website) and helping me with facts about signs and symptoms of drug abuse that I will be putting in my new book. All in all, he is torn, though-- between wanting to forget this ever happened, not wanting his new peers to know about his past, and wrapping his head around how much good we can do to help those in the throes of addiction and hopefully help educate families to detect drug abuse early.
