Tax Preparation Program a Huge Success
Steve Schneider did an exceptional job as site coordinator for the Tax Aide program held at the New Ulm Public Library.  Over 300 returns were prepared by volunteer tax preparers Steve Schneider, Archie Delaiden, Mary Loetscher, Julie VanName, Jim Sprenger, Cathy Trautmiller, Jon Olson and Vicki Sieve.  Also thanks to greeter/intake volunteers Becky Schneider and Peg Sundell.  Each of the preparers spent a week at training and then took tests to be certified as quality preparers.

Harriet Urberg served as scheduler and filled up the time slots with many grateful users.  Most of the clients were either senior citizens with fairly simple returns or young families who wanted to get their entire tax return without paying fees to professional preparers.  We hope to continue or even expand the program next year with more volunteer preparers and perhaps offering it in other towns in Brown County.  Please contact the United Way office at 507-354-6512 if you are interested in hearing more about the program.

United Way Awards 2 Venture Grants
Venture Grants are awarded to any non-profit organization who has not received prior funding from United Way.  The projects must also fulfill the mission of United Way by supporting youth, families and senior citizens with programs to improve their lives.  The first grant was to NUMAS Haus for $2500 to be used to secure staffing when their facility opens.  NUMAS Haus will be a short-term shelter for women with children who want to stay in New Ulm as they transition into a long-term residence.

The second grant was for $600 to Eagle Scout Andrew Blumhoefer to build 5 "My Little Libraries" to be placed in public parks throughout New Ulm.  These libraries look like large birdhouses on a post and people can take books and donate books.  United Way supports all ways to promote literacy and reading for all ages.
