In 1718, the French explorer Sieur de Bienville established a trading post upon a crescent-shaped bend of the lower Mississippi River, named La Nouvelle-Orléans.  Today, the Crescent City ranks among the world's busiest shipping centers, linking the inland Mississippi River trade to the international market.
