NCVPS Teacher of the Year: Jen Currin |
Congratulation to Jennifer Currin, the 2012 NCVPS Teacher of the Year!
Jen's passion for education and talent in the classroom is a powerful combination. She has made numerous presentations to state and national leaders about the award winning Occupational Course of Study (OCS) Blended Program at NCVPS. NCVPS is proud of her excellence in teaching as well as the leadership she has exhibited during her tenure with NCVPS. Please join us in congratulating her.
Jen has had experiences at urban, rural, and online schools. She began her teaching career in 2003 with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools at Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology. She moved to Wilmington, North Carolina, in 2006 and began teaching for Pender County Schools at Heide Trask High School. Jen left Trask in 2008 and currently teaches a full load of classes with NCVPS. Jen has excelled as an teacher and instructional leader for NCVPS where she teaches OCS English and Credit Recovery English for NCVPS. She is also an OCS Development Team Leader.
Jen knew that a career in teaching was right for her early on: "I love to work with people. If I can be a part of helping someone to reach a goal, try something new, or grow in any way, then I jump at the opportunity. I was very fortunate in school to have wonderful teachers. They knew how to build you up and help you to be successful. We are given such an amazing opportunity as teachers to reach so many people. From students and teachers, to parents and the community, we have the opportunity to help to shape our community from our classrooms. I think that is so powerful and such a special opportunity to serve others."
Jen has some great advice for her colleagues: "Get involved with your eLC. If you really reach out to your eLC and get involved there, you will find a wealth of experience, knowledge, and best practices. We sincerely have the BEST teachers in NC. I get the best tips, tricks, and advice from our teachers. They are willing to share everything and help anyone. Do you have a wonderful tool, lesson, or best practice? Share it! I guarantee that you will receive many more in return."
NCVPS would also like to congratulate all of the teachers who were nominated by their peers for the Teacher of the Year award: Annette Frey, Crystal Pullen, Darlene Schaefer, Debra Pylypiw, Kim Small, Kim Veneziano Pullman, Lori Rapp, Lydia Richmond, Rebecca Stone-Danahy, and Teryn Odom.
This was the fifth year for the award. The previous two winners were also finalists for the National Online Teacher of the Year Award. NCVPS's Leslie Fetzer was last year's national winner.

Medical Drops |
If you have a student who needs to be dropped for medical reasons, fax this form to the number that is on the form. Do not withdraw the student in the registration system. Withdrawals count in a district's allotment totals and medical drops do not.

Peer Tutoring Student of the Month |
NCVPS would like to recognize our September Tutor of the Month, Amanda!!
Amanda is a 10th grader who is volunteering her time to tutor with the North Carolina Virtual School Peer Tutoring Center for the first time this semester. This is an online program that is available for almost all students enrolled in an online class in NC. She is a resident of Durham and attends a Charter School nearby. During the first month she tutored online, she spent nearly 40 hours weekly helping students in primarily math and Latin. She has built up a following of a number of students who return to her several times a week due to the tremendous help she provides.
Her tutoring sessions are great examples of what teaching should be all about. She is constantly checking for understanding and leading students to solve their own questions. When a student leaves the session we know that they will understand the concept they were previously having difficulty with. Many of her sessions with students span more than two hours on just a single topic. She is sensitive to their needs and is never in a rush for closure. Somehow she is able to sense their frustration and convince them that they can do the class work if they just relax and work together to problem solve. She is always tactful and considerate of all those involved in the process. She thinks these abilities might be related to the care she had to give to her dog, Muffy, who became injured after escaping her yard when she was very young.
Not only is Amanda a tutor, but a wonderful person who often puts others before herself. A few years back, just barely a teenager and an only child, she had to help care for both of her parents who were ill for a considerable amount of time. We are thankful that all is good now and the family has resumed some of the travel which they have always enjoyed doing together. They especially like to travel to Canada where most of her relatives live.
Her friends call her PI due to her compassion with math and ability to recite that number to over 300 digits. She also enjoys playing the piano and spending time texting her friends, while listening to Linkin Park. Amanda has always been a natural at math and in fact skipped the 8th grade due to her abilities.
We hope to have Amanda tutoring for us for many years and I'm sure this will be the first in a long line of awards and recognition she will receive in the area of Community Service. Congratulations Amanda for a job well done.
It is only appropriate that our Peer Tutor Spotlight shine on Amanda this week. Please share this in your course is you teach a subject Amanda covers.
See Amanda's spotlight here!
Listen to what Amanda has to say about effective Peer Tutoring. This clip was taken from our most recent Peer Tutoring Center meeting where it was announced that she is our September Tutor of the Month. Prior to the meeting (and the announcement of her award) she was asked to speak on how to handle difficult tutoring situations with professionalism and courtesy. Her response is applicable to teaching as well as tutoring. Very touching and heartfelt.

Credit Recovery Testing Standards | Based on information from NC DPI, course codes for Credit Recovery courses have changed based on the standards taught in the course.
The Credit Recovery courses currently in Registration for Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 are for the courses based on the former NC Standard Course of Study standards and end in code (CR).
Following our directive from NC DPI, NCVPS will be adding additional Credit Recovery courses in the Registration for Spring 2013 that represent the new Common Core and Essential Standards with a different end code (XR). NCVPS assumes that any studentscurrently registered for Spring 2013 Credit Recovery need to recover the credit based on the the former standards. If this is not the case, students need to be dropped.
Any students who need to recover a credit based on the new standards that rolled out this fall will need to sign up for the new course with the end code XR. These courses (with the end code XR) will trigger the EOC whereas the courses based on the old standards (with the end code CR) will not.
Please contact Michelle Lourcey (michelle.lourcey@ncpublicschools.gov) for any questions!

Student Password Issues |
If the student's password does not work or if the student can log in but sees no courses, go through the following steps:
1) Confirm that the student is enrolled and not waitlisted.
3) If the student is recently enrolled, remember that passwords will not work for 24 hours.
4) If the student is confirmed enrolled and it has been at least 24 hours since enrollment, then have the student submit an online ticket with our Help Center here: Click on "Open a New Ticket." The student or the E-learning Advisor can submit this ticket. Be sure to include the student's name, Wise number, email address, and course that the student can't access. 5) If a student's password stops working anytime during the semester, have the student submit an online ticket with the Help Center.

Reporting NCVPS Classes on Transcripts for NCAA Clearing House | |
We have been working with NCAA to get clarification on how to better help students who are trying to get clearance. The NCAA understands that NCVPS can't award the grade as we are not degree granting and that the NC public school awards the grades.
We have one solution to share with schools systems. It has been suggested that schools document the classes on the transcripts as such:
Algebra I - NCVPS
Algebra I CR-NCVPS - (for the credit recovery classes prior to Aug 2011) - they will not accept CR classes from Aug 11 forward since we are not longer providing a letter grade.
You can also list the course ID to show the semester, etc:
algebraIsec04spr11 - NCVPS
This example helps them to see what semester etc. this course was taken when they are doing their evaluation as well.
By doing this, it will help the NCAA to know this was an online class with NCVPS and that we do not award the grades. Please make sure you designate NCVPS over just ONLINE CLASS. |
