Organized Chaos
Welcome to the February edition of the Heartland Glass newsletter.
Ahhhh February, the month of love, right? That brings me to a thought about Kathy and my recent move to Blaine. I had forgotten how much moving disrupts your everyday life. Kathy and I thought we were prepared well in advance of our actual move. We had sold, donated or simply threw away many items that we no longer needed.
It was only after we moved into our new home that we realized we still have a lot of loved "stuff" that has been accumulated over the years that is still in boxes. We obviously don't need it, yet, there have been a few friendly disagreements about what we should keep or not keep. I mean who would throw out a menu from the Bret Favre Steak House?! Or why should we keep a toy cash register in hopes that future grandchildren will pine to become retailers someday? So we are still navigating through the unpacked boxes trying to figure out what to love and what to let go of and come to a sense of routine and normalcy in the new digs.
| We recently had a surprise visit from good friends and old neighbors. Thanks Kris and Paul! Love you guys! |
Navigating through challenges is something that we encounter in business every day. Separating "real" challenges from "perceived" challenges is often hard for team members to recognize and prioritize. Real challenges that affect a client's experience or one that impacts the company financially, need to be dealt with in a timely fashion. Those perceived challenges can be road blocks that lead to inefficiencies and morale issues. High performers identify these differences and that what makes them more effective in their jobs. We try to build a culture at Heartland and Brin and empower our team members to solve those perceived challenges on their own and support them when they truly do have a challenge. It's one of the many keys to our success.
Speaking of success, we continue to build on our backlog of secured work at all division levels. The final 2015 numbers aren't finished yet, but the first run looks to be very good. I want to thank all of our team members for their dedication and hard work and congratulate them on a great year!
As always we wish you continued success and thank you for carving out some time to read our newsletter.
Thank you.

Morris Area Hospital Gets A $2 Million Facelift
Stevens Community Medical Center in Morris, MN is wrapping up a multi-year, multi-million dollar renovation that included updating the ER to include four private areas - one large trauma area and three back-up exam treatment rooms - and a nursing station.
Heartland Glass had a hand in the renovation. The upper level of the building has Wausau Windows 4250i/XLT and Tubelite T14000 in slate grey and the lower level is Tubelite T14000 in a custom-matched red finish.
The original hospital window trim had a bright red finish, but over time, the color had weathered to a burgundy red. The new windows match perfectly. This project went very smooth for the most part with just a couple of issues along the way. The window openings were a bit on the large side so there were larger joints than anticipated. The building panels were a bit of a challenge to coordinate since the openings were big and the windows had already been manufactured.
Thank you to SCMC for including Heartland Glass in your new space!

Lynette Zima,
Sales and Customer Service
|
Heartland Glass is very happy to honor Lynette Zima as our Employee of the Month for February.
Lynette has been in retail and commercial sales and customer service for Heartland Glass for more than 16 years. Originally from Sartell, MN, she attended St. Cloud State University for speech communication and business management.
"I like the fast-paced industry," Lynette said. "We all have to be on the same page and that takes a lot of teamwork. We also all wear many hats around here. I like how everyone chips in."
Helping customers is Lynette's forte. "My favorite part of my job is cultivating those relationships," Lynette said, "I've known some of our customers for over 16 years!"
She can often be found in other areas of the shop lending a hand as well.

Two current unique projects demonstrate
versatility, beauty of glass
| 700 C 700C series in a brushed nickel finish with obscure glass. |
One of Heartland's most unique and varied glass projects is soon to be wrapping up in Avon, MN this spring.
Blattner Energy is a company with a vibe of its own and its 23,300 square-foot addition plus remodeled space definitely reflects the company's modern approach. Take the bathroom shower area for instance. Blattner was going for a fresh approach with this colorful design courtesy of Heartland Glass. The shower doors at the Blattner project are Heartland's 700C series in a brushed nickel finish with obscure glass (pattern #62). The doors have a full magnetic strip on the handle jam for latching and a full continuous hinge for smooth operation. For more privacy and to blend into the bathroom, Orafol Graphic Products High Performance film was applied with a solvent-based adhesive for long-lasting performance. Heartland used the 651-047 Orange/Red color to match the interior of the locker room area. The handicap stalls had to be bumped out from the openings for better accessibility inside and this framing allowed Heartland to custom design that.
One of our other more extensive projects is actually on the Brin side of our business and is truly a feather in our cap. The University of North Dakota "Robin Hall" building, part of the UND Aerospace Foundation and the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences, is well underway. We thought we'd share some photographs of the progress.
The height and tight site constraints present challenges for our installation team. The use of aerial lifts has been instrumental in the erection of the curtainwall in the tower. Here we are using (2) 135 ft Genie articulating booms.
A Wasco Pinnacle sloping skylight system was also installed by Brin Contract Glazing.
The tower element of the building stands 12 ˝ stories above the ground and is enclosed on all sides using a Tubelite curtainwall system fabricated and installed by Brin Contract Glazing. The metal panels and a Wasco Pinnacle sloping skylight system were also installed by Brin Contract Glazing.
There are 17,500 lbs. of steel reinforcement throughout the curtainwalls and 11,261 square feet of exterior insulated glass.

Andersen's VeriLock product wins award at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Andersen put on a good show a the CES in Vegas last month. The only window manufacturer on site, they took home the glory with their innovative VeriLock product.
Andersen's VeriLock safety technology notifies homeowners if windows and doors are open, and also signals if those windows and doors are locked. This added locked indicator is both an energy conservation and safety bonus. Windows are three times more energy efficient if they are locked.
Starting this March, VeriLock technology will be available on Andersen's 400 series and also will be a retrofitted product for the 400 series, so owners of previously installed windows and doors can now add the VeriLock technology.
