Lovin' a little East coast lobster!

Greetings and welcome to the October edition of our newsletter!

This month, my wife Kathy and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary by taking a trip out east and enjoying the fall colors of New England. We had a great time and we were able to visit our son, Shawn in Boston too. I can report that the foliage was stunning and equally stunning was the size of the fresh Maine lobster. It was delicious by the way!

During our tour, we stayed in a few national chain hotels and several inns, (we would call them bed and breakfasts here). I can say overall we had great customer service at most places, but we did experience a few people who obviously were not engaged in their job and made little effort to deliver the level of service that I am sure their supervisor, the inn owner, would expect.

Customer service is big for me and our organization. We try and instill in all of our employees that they are all in sales regardless of their position or job title. When an employee in any industry shows indifference to a customer, I can guarantee that that customer won't be back. I often wonder why these people who are so unsatisfied in their job even come to work. Find something that you love to do and do it. Don't tarnish the experience for the customer! I certainly hope that our Heartland Glass and Brin Northwestern customers continue to have many reasons to keep coming back to us and that customer service and satisfaction is at the top of that list.

Good news on the business end of things. The construction market continues to be strong both locally and at our other locations. Backlogs remain consistent from month to month which is an indicator of how robust the activity is. From speaking with several local general contractors and architects, it appears 2016 will be just as strong!

Lastly I wanted to share some pictures of projects that our Brin Contract Team is involved with. You might recognize that we are associated with the new substantial Viking stadium project. We are the glazing contractor for the parking ramp and several of the skyway projects in the area. These have been challenging in a variety of ways but primarily in meeting the minority and female labor goals established by the city and state. I won't get into the politics of these policies as I am sure you are already tired of the antics of the current political climate that exists in Washington but...

As always, we appreciate your business and interest in Heartland Glass and wish you and your family good health and a Happy Halloween!

Heartland Glass gets a good grade on

tight turnaround at Bethel University

Beautiful new wall of windows at

Bethel University, St. Paul.

October 12 signaled the finish line and successful completion of the aggressive timetable Bethel University had put in place for the opening of it's new Wellness Center. Started only 11 months ago on November 17, 2014, an army of donors, contributors and workers pulled together to get the 11,000 square foot facility completed on time.

The Wellness Center features more than 11,000 square feet total including workout space and fitness equipment on two levels, plus a third level which houses three assessment labs and four collaborative research spaces to support Bethel's biokinetics program.

Further upgrades include locker room remodels and a new, open floor plan that allow space for interaction and community. The Wellness Center reflects a larger community emphasis on physical, mental, social and spiritual well-being.

Project manager Ken Schueller led the Heartland Glass team. "Heartland Glass wasn't the low bidder on this project but with value engineering we were awarded this project," Ken said.

"This project had wide variety of glass features including architectural aluminum windows, an aluminum storefront, aluminum thermal and durastile doors, aluminum curtain wall, mirrored walls, fire-rated glazing and gradient filmed glass," Ken said, "The biggest portion on this project was 2,300 square feet of curtain wall with some very large insulated glass. The condensed schedule of this project was extremely challenging but we got it done!"

Thank you to all of our building partners for selecting Heartland Glass for your projects.

We appreciate your faith in our products, our company and our purpose.

October Featured Employee,  Matt Dieser

Matt and Beth Dieser.

Matt recently joined Heartland Glass as a project manager.

We are happy to report that we got a new face at Heartland Glass just about exactly three months ago. Matt Dieser  has joined our team as a project manager.

Matt attends site meetings, completes purchase orders, logs a lot of windshield time and helps work through project timelines at the various job sites.

"Watching a building go from a hole in the ground to its finished design is the best part of my job," Matt said.

Matt grew up in Rochester, MN and attended Kasson-Mantorville High School. He went on to attend Rochester Community & Technical College where he earned his Carpentry Certificate and later attended
MNSU - Mankato where he majored in Construction Management and minored in business.

Although he's held a variety of construction positions, Heartland Glass has been an ideal move for Matt. "The friendliness of the people here and their willingness to make me feel like I belong is great," Matt said. "I was surprised to learn about the number of and variety of projects that we do. Learning about all the different hardware has been challenging, but good."

"All of my projects have been a challenge, but that's what I like about my job," Matt said, "I never have a duplicate day, or know what the next day may bring."

Currently, Matt's main jobs are Heartland Chevrolet & St. Cloud Subaru. "The Subaru architectural wall specs look nothing like the original plans which have made this project very interesting," Matt said. "For instance, the original sills were 2 inches deep and now they are 12 inches deep. We figure it out."

Outside of work, Matt enjoys wood working, tinkering in the garage, snowboarding, making wine, volunteering at a zoo and taking care of their pets. "I also build decks and do design work with a mechanical engineer," Matt said, "Besides my hobbies, I like to go shoot at targets with friends, ride ATV, & play video games for fun."

Welcome to Heartland Glass Matt!

The Glass Craft - high touch, not high tech

"The human hand creates perfect imperfection."

Go behind the scenes at the Simon Pearce glass factory here.

One of the highlights of our east coast visit was the opportunity to visit the Simon Pearce glass factory in Quechee, Vermont. In our day-to-day life in the commercial and residential glass world, we deal in acres of panes of high-tech manufactured glass. It was a pleasure to slow down and experience the traditional craft of glass blowing and to see the glass come to life in so many simple, beautiful hand-crafted forms.

Over 40 years ago, Simon Pearce, an Irish glass designer and blower raised by potter parents, opened his workshop in Quechee, VT on the site of a 300 year old wool mill in order to create handcrafted glass using old-world techniques. He used the hydroelectric power of the Ottauquechee River to fuel the factory that creates simple, elegant and functional glass pieces.

I can see why Mr. Pearce not only came here but decided to stay. It's a lovely part of our country.
