Summertime Sullivan

Greetings and welcome to the July edition of our newsletter!

If you recall from last month's newsletter, we celebrated a couple of weddings here at Heartland Glass. This month we are celebrating the successful surgery of long time Brin/Heartland employee Dan Winters. Dan fell ill after arriving home after work a couple of weeks ago and his wife Linda rushed him to the hospital where they determined surgery was necessary. After some delays and anxious moments the surgery was performed. Dan has been in recovery and still has some battles in his future but we are grateful that he was able to navigate this first hurdle and we will continue to support him and his family along their journey. I am very proud of our team at Heartland in the way that they have supported Dan and his family and helped each other by picking up

Dan Winters
Dan Winters, on the mend!

and taking over Dan's responsibilities. This is no small feat as Dan's 30+ years in the business is hard to replicate.

Weddings and illness are just two of the many issues team members and management has to deal with in their work environment. It really reinforces the fact that people are the most important assets in a successful company and it has been a key component of our success!

Another success story is our featured project this month, Lerner Publishing. Lerner is located in downtown Minneapolis and because of Heartland's relationship with Andersen Windows, we were able to collaborate with Brin Contract in replacing the windows. One of the challenging and interesting aspects of this project is that it is located in a historically sensitive area. The windows had to be reviewed by the Historical Preservation Commission. Andersen's E-Series windows were able to meet both the performance and historical requirements set for by the HPC. I am excited to use this project to highlight both Andersen and Heartland/Brin's capabilities in this ever increasing market. Stay tuned!

Please take time to enjoy the beautiful summer weather we are experiencing, I am seeing back to school specials already which means fall is right around the corner.

We appreciate your business and wish you and your family good health.

Be well!

Heartland vendor, Viracon, involved in multiple AIA award-winning projects

Heartland Glass is pleased to work with great Minnesota vendors such as the award-winning, Owatonna-based Viracon.

From the Viracon press release:

The AIA's Committee on the Environment has announced its Top Ten Projects for 2015, two of which were constructed with Viracon glass products. The winners were chosen based on design practices that integrate built and natural systems that enhance both the design quality and environmental performance of the built environment.

This year, Viracon excels with not one, but two prominent projects that reflect the company's high quality, environmentally sound glass products.

Collaborative Life Sciences Building
Viracon's involvement in the Collaborative Life Sciences Building (CLSB) - a new allied health, academic and research building for the newly-partnered Oregon Health & Science University, Portland State University, and Oregon State University - helped position the project as a Top Ten.

The project features Viracon Insulating products - VE1-2M and VNE1-63 glass types across the 650,000-square-foot combined educational, food service, health care and laboratory building in Portland, Oregon.

New Orleans BioInnovation Center
Viracon garnered its other recognition on the AIA's Top Ten for their involvement in the New Orleans BioInnovation Center (NOBIC). Viracon showcases its Insulating Laminated Silk-screened VNE1-63 glass type for this project.

Overlooking New Orleans' historic French Quarter, downtown university campuses, and the Treme neighborhood, the NOBIC revitalized the neighborhood, generating more than 200 jobs. This 64,000-square-foot LEED Gold research facility was completed in August 2011.

Both projects are eye-catching and efficient, proving Viracon's contribution to the aesthetics and performance of these buildings - key considerations in this year's AIA Top Ten.

Viracon, the nation's leading single-source architectural glass fabricator, is based in Owatonna, Minnesota, and produces high-performance glass products, including tempered, laminated, insulating, silk-screened, digital printing, and high-performance coatings, for North American and international markets.

ClearPoint™ by Viracon is an insulated point supported glass system that increases the transparency of a glass faade. Watch this video to see the production process of ClearPoint™.

July Featured Employee,  Sue Reith

Heartland Glass Administrative Assistant, Sue Reith, and her son, Ryan.

Meet Sue Reith, Administrative Assistant at Heartland Glass.  "I handle payroll, accounts payables, accounts receivables and contract filings," Sue said.

The St. Joseph, MN native went to Apollo High School in St. Cloud and got her AA Degree in Administrative Support at St. Cloud Technical & Community College."I have worked in a variety of differentadministrative positions," Sue said. "One of my favorite positions was working at Northrop Grumman in California on the B-2 Stealth Bomber Program as a Budget Analyst.  It was an amazing position being able to see those huge bombers every day and deal with billion dollar budgets!"

Sue was also the director of a non-profit senior organization in Southern Minnesota for 8 years. "We provided assistance to seniors in our local communities," Sue said, "It was a very rewarding position to be able to assist home-bound and vulnerable adults."

After leaving that position, Sue moved back to St. Joseph and worked a few temporary positions before she started at Heartland Glass in March 2014. Her favorite part of the opportunity at Heartland is her co-workers.

"Spending time together is one of my favorite things," Sue said of enjoying adventures with her husband, Dan, and Son, Ryan.

"Everyone gets along and enjoys their jobs and it makes it a pleasure to come to work," Sue said. "Everyone is helpful and friendly.  It really makes the job!"

Sue's family includes her husband, Dan, son, Ryan, black lab, Haylie and two demon cats, Raven and Bandit. Her favorite pastimes include reading and listening to music. "Our family likes to spend time together at the lake and playing with our animals," Sue said.

Thank you to each and every one of our team members for making our blended family of Heartland Glass and Brin Northwestern such a strong, successful one!

Children's book mogul, Lerner Publishing, combines preservation with upgrades in historic

Minneapolis-based corporate headquarters.

Brin Northwestern installers work carefully to update the windows of the historic Lerner Publishing building.

Heartland Glass recently partnered with Minneapolis-based general contractor, Watson Forsberg, to work through the process of remodeling the historic Lerner Publishing Building in downtown Minneapolis, adding new features while preserving elements of the past.  Founded in 1959, Lerner Publishing Group, is one of the largest independently owned children's book publishers in the United States.

Christina Welle is the project manager from Brin Northwestern who is working with Watson Forsberg on the project to replace the windows on the second, third and fourth floors. "Heartland Glass did the estimating and ordered the windows, which are from the Andersen E-series," Christina said. "The new and highly efficient Andersen products were selected because
they were the closest match to the original windows. This is in the historical district so the new windows had to match the old wood windows."

New Andersen E-series windows were used to coordinate with the historical features of the original structure.

"The 45 windows on the front side of the building were painted plum on the

exterior and have a wood finish on the interior," Christina said. "The other two sides will be replaced with St. Cloud windows in the near future.  The first floor windows were replaced by Brin in 2007 and are aluminum."

The team encountered some unique challenges working with the city and historical society to get approvals for the project and overcome some logistical challenges.

"We had to obtain meter hoodings and street permits, close the parking lane and get protective pedestrian scaffold all arranged before the install could happen," Christina said.

The project was a first of its kind in a way. "This is the first Andersen Windows job for Brin, so thanks to Heartland's knowledge of the wood windows and expertise in ordering them, it was a success and the windows fit beautifully!" Christina said.
