H Window narrow
Shawn Sullivan getting quite a lesson in architecture in Dubai.
Global Education

Greetings! Welcome to the May edition of our newsletter!

The young man in this picture is my son Shawn who recently completed his first year at Northeastern University in Boston. His declared major is Architecture; his minor, it seems, is travel and adventure. In less than a year's time he has traveled to Spain, Florida and most recently to Dubai which is located in United Arab Emirates. Yes, I know what you are thinking, spoiled kid!  While I might agree at times with that assessment (sorry buddy) he has financed 2 of the 3 trips on his own dime. If you can believe it, his trip to Dubai cost him less than $600.00. That included airfare, hotel and food! No this wasn't a school-sponsored trip but an adventure inspired by a good friend who searches out extraordinary deals and shares Shawn's passion for architecture.

To learn more about the Burj Khalifa, check out the official website at: http://www.burjkhalifa.ae/en/TheTower/Vision.aspx

You see Dubai is an amazing place when it comes to architecture and is home to the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa which is almost 3 times taller than the IDS Tower which is the tallest building in Minnesota! And look at all of that glass! I think I could retire after a project like that. I bring this up because I continue to be amazed at the opportunities that exist for my children. Our world is a much different place than when I grew up. I never imagined going abroad let alone to the Middle East. Heck I couldn't have afforded a trip to Florida. It also points out how our world is a much smaller place for us personally and professionally.

I'm glad Shawn has such a strong interest in architecture which should serve him well as he continues to work towards his degree. I am also proud of him for having the courage to fuel his passion with his travels and yes I am a bit jealous of him! I told him to take me next time!

Memorial Day is coming up and it means so much more than the beginning of summer and grilling season, it's a time to remember and honor our service men and women, those living and those who have passed. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers, not only on Monday, but always. Oah Rah Uncle John, Oah Rah! I thought I would share this wonderful video from Lasting Tribute Video with you. The important message of Memorial Day really hits home.

Thank you for taking the time to read our newsletter. We always appreciate hearing from you.

Wishing you continued success!

May Featured Employee,

Kevin Zimmerman, Flintknapper

Kevin found this oxbow arrowhead in a field in April. "This is one of the nicest I have seen. The tip is still needle sharp. That's pretty good for being in the ground for a few thousand years!" Kevin said.

At Heartland Glass, we encourage our team members to focus on their families and what is fun for them in their lives. We believe that encouraging our employees to follow their passions creates a work environment of appreciation and camaraderie.

Recently, Heartland Glass Glass Cutter, Kevin Zimmerman, shared a very cool find, a rare oxbow point arrowhead that he had discovered. Hunting for clues about ancient peoples, in particular ancient Minnesota peoples, is truly one of Kevin's passions. His hobby is officially called flintknapping, which involves all areas of archeological exploration, studying and even replicating primitive things like stone tools and weapons. "We also do primitive camping and reenact ancient living," Kevin said.

Kevin and his wife Ali both attended SCSU and studied archeology and now include their 10-year-old daughter Fiona in their passion for history and archeology. "We've found pottery shards, arrowheads, scrapers and several flakes of obsidian which was used as a super sharp slicing tool," Kevin said. They are involved with local groups like Sticks N Stones, MN who share similar archeological interests.

He also hunts for stone that he can use to create primitive tools and weapons. "Most of what I find is along rivers or in glacial till other than the flatrock quartz which I find near old quarry sites," Kevin said.

The middle arrowhead shown here is made from a rock called Georgetown. It is out of the Edwards plateau deposit near Georgetown, Texas, hence the name.

"It's not the hardness of the stone I use that matters as much as their ability to have a clean conchoidal fracture," Kevin said. Conchoidal fractures often result in a curved breakage surface that resembles the rippling, gradual curves of a mussel shell.

"There is some good local stone for making things like arrowheads but it is few and far between that you can find a piece that is not frost fractured," Kevin said. "Also most of the ancient quarries are lost or protected. I would say at least half of the artifacts I find in Minnesota are made from materials that were brought in by trade or glaciation."

Thank you to each and every one of our team members for making our blended family of Heartland Glass and Brin Northwestern such a strong, successful one!
