Looking Ahead
Welcome to our February edition of our newsletter.
I always tell myself, by the time we get through February, we have made it through the tough stretch of winter. It may still snow a fair amount in March (tournament time tradition right?) or even into April but the temperatures are starting to rise and the sun is warm. We can start looking ahead to that magical season...spring!
Speaking of looking ahead, our son Shawn got a little lesson on expecting the unexpected this winter. Shawn is attending school at Northeastern University in Boston. As we were preparing to ship him off to college this past fall, his mother was concerned that he didn't pack any winter boots. "What do I need those for?" was his reply. Again, after his winter break, I attempted to get him to buy into the fact that winter boots wouldn't be a bad idea.

Nope, he didn't need them.
Well 95 inches of snow this past month may have taught him after all that his mother does know a thing or two about planning ahead!
Our winter here at home has been relatively mild on the snow fall front compared to our East Coast neighbors. It's truly amazing some of the pictures that have been flashed across the news channels. I particularly like the one where it shows someone opening their door and a drift has completely covered the door way. In the snow was an impression of the door. Now THAT'S a snowstorm!
One of my favorite reasons to look ahead to spring is getting back outside to train. Being a self-proclaimed fair weather runner and cycler, I'm always impressed with the hardy souls who brave this cold to get their miles in. I tend to need the motivation of organized competitive events to force me into a more regular training routine. Speaking of that, you'll see an opportunity to sign up for the local Apple Duathlon later on in the newsletter. Come race or volunteer with me! We always have a blast-- it's something to look forward to! We all need motivation and everyone's triggers are different so whatever motivates you, identify it and use it to your advantage.
Speaking of motivation, I would like to share an example of making the most of an opportunity that Patrick Reusse of the Star Tribune wrote about recently. For you basketball fans, you may know that former Gopher standout Randy Breurer had his number retired and was inducted into the Gophers Hall of Fame. Randy's induction prompted this article by Reusse: Click here for the full Star Tribune story
My father-in-law, Jerry Snyder, who is featured in the story, was Randy's High School basketball coach. Randy wasn't necessarily going to attend Lake City High School or even play basketball at all. How the two met is an interesting story and the basis of Reusse's article. Their meeting highlights that when an opportunity presents itself in life and in business, if you don't take that leap of faith, and in this case get off the ladder, you could be missing a great opportunity. I try and coach my team members to take that leap and investigate opportunities when they are presented. They may not materialize into one of the all-time great Gophers but it may turn into an interesting story.
The arrival of spring will be good for business too. Our first quarter has been relatively soft and our backlog starts to materialize into active jobs into March and April. Bidding activity is fairly strong for this time of year although project starts in the St. Cloud metro are still not where they should be. Read on to see a national perspective on that same subject.
If you get a chance, come visit us at the CMBA Home Show at the River's Edge Event Center, March 6-8th. We'd love to show you the latest in residential glass products. From windows to shower doors, mirrors to glass backsplashes Heartland Glass has you covered!
Wishing you continued success!

A new home for St. Cloud-based Preferred Credit
 | Heartland Glass is proud to be a building partner in the new Preferred Credit headquarters project. |
St. Cloud-based Preferred Credit, an in-home consumer financing company, recently broke ground on its new headquarters and operations facility in the District Square Business Park off of Roosevelt Road in St. Cloud. Heartland Glass is one of the building partners along with General Contractor Miller Architects and Builders. The new facility at 628 Roosevelt Road, will cover 43,000 square feet, nearly doubling its current size at its location on Second Street South.
Heartland's glass elements include exterior glass in Bronze tinted glass with Solarban 60 Low e coating. Solarban 60 blocks 62 percent of total solar energy while allowing 70 percent of visible light to pass through.
That quality provides year-round comfort with heating and cooling cost savings. The bronze tinted glass also adds aesthetic and performance qualities.
"So far we have only glazed the exterior it is going very well," said Heartland Glass project manager Dan Winters of the extensive project. "There are approximately 200 lineal feet of floor to ceiling half-inch glass walls and 7 glass doors on the second floor interior. There are also 20 aluminum framed office fronts on the second floor interior."
The new building is scheduled to open in May.
Preferred Credit, which was founded by Gene Windfeldt in 1982, currently has 280 employees, has added 80 people in the past four years and expects to top the 300 mark in the near future.

February Featured Employee, Ben Voigt
Fabricator Ben Voigt is looking forward to his first year anniversary at Heartland Glass coming up in April. Even though he's new to our team, he's not new to interesting on-the-job challenges. "Working on E2-C Hawkeyes in the Navy gave me some unique metal-working skills," Ben said.
Born in Georgia, Ben also lived in Maryland and Virginia before moving to Minnesota in 1999. He graduated from Pierz Healy High School.
"My favorite part of working at Heartland Glass are all the different jobs we do and learning new skills to accomplish new and different tasks," Ben said.
In his free time, Ben enjoys cooking, grilling and smoking meats.
Thank you to each and every one of our team members for making our blended family of Heartland Glass and Brin Northwestern such a strong, successful one!

What 2015 has in store -- more stores!
Although coming back slowly, more commercial construction projects like this $20 million, 118,000 square-foot retail project, the Watford Plaza, in Watford North Dakota that Heartland Glass is currently working on, are finally back on the rise. |
Looking ahead to the rest of 2015, all indicators point to a strengthening U.S. economy, according to the Dodge Data & Analytics 2015 Dodge Construction Outlook. Total employment levels reached their pre-recession peak last May 2014; manufacturing is on the upswing. Despite these widespread positive economic indicators however, construction has lagged. The rest of 2015 could change that. In fact, overall construction starts are expected to increase 9 percent in 2015, a sure but steady upward crawl.
Commercial building will likely increase 15 percent in 2015. Institutional building will see gains of 9 percent, led by increases in K-12 school construction. Hotel construction starts are forecast to surge 36 percent in 2015. Multifamily construction proved to be one of the fastest growing building segments in 2014 and was up 26 percent in September over the year before.
All those upward arrows are something for all of us to look forward to!
