We imagine you are like the rest of us. You want to get maximum value when buying a product. Value often refers to a cost savings but its true meaning is not met if we disregard the quality, workmanship, and reliability of that product, none of which matters unless it is the right choice for the job.

When considering the right pump for your project and an environmental pump is what you require, be sure the pump is equipped with an environmental motor and not a standard water well motor.  Learn more below.

The Difference Between Environmental and Water Well MotorsMotors

One of the major differences in a water well motor when compared to an environmental motor is that it has a breather vent at the top of the motor. As the motor heats and cools during normal run cycle, the liquid in the motor expands and contracts.  When the motor fluid is heated during the run cycle, pressure builds inside the motor, which on the water well motor, forces some of the fluid out (in the environmental motor, there is a pressure compensation diaphragm).  If the motor is submerged in clean water, this is not going to be a problem.  If, however, the motor is submerged in contaminated water (leachate), over time the fluid in the motor is replaced with dirty contaminated liquid.  This liquid does not transfer heat as well and will begin to corrode the motor from the inside out.

Most often when these motors fail, the customer is informed that the motor has overheated. This is often a correct statement but it is not the customer's operation of the pump or the system design that is at fault.  It is misapplying a lower cost motor.  A water well motor is several hundred dollars less than an environmental motor and its lifespan is approximately 40% of an appropriately used environmental motor.

Water well motors and environmental motors look the same and are the same physical size. The part number is the only way to tell the difference. There are a few other differences in materials and gaskets, but the main problem is the inevitable fluid exchange and ultimate failure of the motor.
