In this edition of EPG's Connection we share our Top Ten List of things to help prevent corrosion in control panels and other electrical enclosures often exposed to the elements.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth at the 2014 Global Waste Management Symposium in Orlando. We look forward to meeting people at Swana's 2014 WASTECON in Dallas.

EPG is sponsoring a golf hole at Great Lakes Fusion's 2nd Annual Charity Golf Outing to benefit the Shane Cantu Scholarship Fund and to honor all fallen soldiers who gave their lives for our country. The event takes place in Durand, MI on Saturday, July 12, 2014.

If you're interested in supporting the event or would like to learn more about Great Lakes Fusion's landfill projects and capabilities, visit their website at www.greatlakesfusion.com for contact information.

Here is EPG's Top Ten List to Combat Corrosion:

  1. Change corrosion inhibitors every year. Each control panel and breakout junction box EPG manufactures has one installed.
  2. Change desiccant dryers when color changes from blue to pink. If the desiccant material has turned white, it is no longer protecting the level sensor from moisture.
  3. Seal-offs should be installed in each conduit run between riser/sump and control panel. Seal-offs are ineffective unless the damming fiber and sealing compound are in place. This is typically the responsibility of the electrician so be certain to check that this has been done.
  4. Since electrical conduit threads are straight and do not seal, they should be sealed with Teflon™ tape. *This does eliminate conduit as a ground so a separate ground wire must be pulled.
  5. Make sure enclosures are plum and level to insure doors are straight and seal properly. Inspect doors and make sure they are not bent and keep them closed.
  6. During inspection of control panels and breakout boxes, make note of any signs of water stains, discoloration of wiring, or terminal corrosion. These are signs that the enclosure has been compromised by moisture and/or gas.
  7. Any evidence of insect or small animals inside the enclosure should also be addressed.
  8. EPG recommends that control panels be mounted in a secure fashion at least 15' from the riser or sump and 36" above grade to the bottom of control panel. If in the design stage, please strongly consider these recommendations.
  9. Be sure to reinstall and/or replace cord restraints or Meyer's hubs after any cable repair or maintenance is performed.
  10. Check out our new water-proof wire connectors (below)

If you have any questions or concerns regarding corrosion prevention, please call EPG at 1-800-443-7426. We can help!

EPG is now including Water Proof Wire Connectors with many of our motor lead and level & flow sensor breakout boxes.  These connectors provide superior protection against the damaging effects of moisture and corrosion. They are UL listed as a wire connector for use in damp, wet, and rain tight applications.

If you have any questions or would like to purchase these connectors, please call EPG at 1-800-443-7426.
