Dickson Health and Rehab Focuses on Progression in Patient Care

null

Dickson Health and Rehab, located at 901 N. Charlotte St. in the former Dickson County Nursing Home facility, has been privately owned for 10 years by Mission Health. Dickson Health and Rehab is a 70 bed facility with 60 employees and a Medical Doctor and Nurse Practitioner on staff. Joan Rial, the Director of Marketing and Admissions, shares how their facility prioritizes patients, "Because we are a smaller facility, every patient receives individualized care and attention. We are like a family."

A big part of the Dickson Health and Rehab family is the Rehabilitation team. Laura Sostre, OTR the Director of Rehabilitation, Suzanne Sample, DPT and Gayle Whitfield, COTA-L are excited about their new facility; a gleaming, new, gym-like room full of natural light and exercise equipment.

 The newly remodeled Rehab Department

Laura and her team currently oversee 26 short and long-term patients who are receiving treatment for a variety of needs including motor vehicle accidents, strokes, orthopedic surgery, COPD, and heart conditions to name a few.  Laura keeps her patients focused on the end goal, "This is your job while you're here," she says, "to get better".

With so many people working towards a common goal, it's not surprising that the Rehab Team encourages each other by saying "Go team!", this positive outlook influences their patients attitude towards therapy and recovery.

Families play a big role in their loved one's rehab. Laura and her team are in constant contact with patients' families and even make themselves accessible on the weekends to answer any questions family members have. Keeping everyone involved is important to Dickson Health and Rehab, because often these are the people that short-term patients return home to. To help patients and their families with the transition from full-time care and rehabilitation to living at home, the team conducts home trials to see how well patients function in their home environment before transitioning out of full-time care.

Patients at Dickson Health and Rehab have the benefit of having Dr. John R. Manning, M.D. stop in to check on their condition and progress each week. The entire staff at Dickson Health and Rehab is committed to staying progressive in their field, Laura sums this up by saying, "We're challenged daily to make sure we get better".

On October 3rd from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Dickson Health and Rehab is hosting an Open House and inviting the public and the medical community to come tour the newly remodeled Rehab Department. For more information contact Joan Rial at 615-446-5171 or visit their website

Did you see the party going on at the cute little log cabin on Highway 46 South? Cuppa Sunshine Coffee and Tea had their huge $1 drink grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting on Tuesday, September 24th. Cuppa Sunshine has officially been open for about two months, but wanted to give folks who hadn't been let in on the secret a chance to try them out, as well as thank the regular cutomers that have come to depend on them for their morning cup of joe. "There was a constant line of cars all day, but we had so much fun," said new espresso making expert, Kailee Greer.

Steven and Sunshine Greer, California natives, recently moved from North Dakota where Steven worked in the oil field for the last five years and Sunshine was a stay at home mom to their four children. In search of a more family friendly lifestyle, they landed in Dickson. It took just over a year, but they finally opened their drive-thru coffee business, Cuppa Sunshine Coffee and Tea. The Greers run the coffee stand with their two teenage daughters, Kailee and Ireland, who are gaining wonderful experience in business and customer service. You can find Cuppa Sunshine just south of I-40 about a mile past O'Charley's on Highway 46 in front of Bruce Peery Co.

Cuppa Sunshine Coffee and Tea is open weekdays from 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Their menu has the typical coffee house treats like mochas and lattes and they also feature a tasty specialty menu with drinks like "Caramel Banana Bread" and "Coconut Cream Pie". There are plenty of selections for non-coffee drinkers like fruit smoothies, teas or frozen hot chocolates. Check out their Facebook page to see more of their extensive menu. For more information contact Sunshine at 326-8002 or, better yet, meet her and her daughters when you stop by for a delicious drink.

Special orders are welcome and typically arrive in a matter of days. If you're not sure what you're looking for, but would like a good read, the staff at Reading Rock is happy to offer recommendations. Reading Rock Books also sells Kobo eReaders and eBooks. Reading Rock owner, Laura Hill, got her start in bookselling at independent bookstores in California. As a means to get her sister to move back to Tennessee, Laura's sister, Amy Jernigan, proposed they open their own store in Dickson. They did so in September of 2008 in a small location on College Street. Before the year was out, they purchased their current building on Main Street and moved Reading Rock Books in January 2009.
