Keller's Corny Country Makes Agritourism Fun and Educational

Bryan and Tonya Keller have lived on their farm in Tennessee City since 2001, starting out as cattle farmers and struggling to break even. Everything changed in 2008 when the Kellers attended a conference offered by the Tennessee Agritourism Association (TAA) and the Tennessee Department of Agriculture (TDA) where they heard about the Tennessee Agriculture Enhancement Program (TAEP), a cost-share grant program offered by the TDA and funded by tobacco dollars. The Kellers joined the TAA at the conference, came home to Dickson County, sold their cows and dove head first into agritourism.

Their first step was a simple ad in the newspaper that said, "Wanted: Free Playground Equipment", if you visit Keller's Corny Country you will see just how successful that ad was - their barn yard is home to a colorful, fun playground.

Through TAEP grants, the Kellers constructed a country store, a pavilion, a 5,000 square foot barn, numerous picnic tables, launched a website, printed banners and brochures, purchased a pumpkin sprayer, irrigation system, a sound system, advertised in the newspaper, on the radio and at the movie theater.

In the fall of 2008, their first year of operation, Keller's Corny Country hosted 2,500 guests. In 2012, their fifth year of operation brought 7,000 guests to the farm and approximately 1,700 were students.

The Kellers take pride in their educational program for school children that focuses on the many uses of pumpkins and corn, and how the honey bee is essential to farming. Using music and fun costumed characters, they teach about farming in an entertaining way. When the day is over, each student leaves with a pumpkin and a pumpkin patch coloring book to remember their day.

In addition to their educational program, Keller's Corny Country offers company picnics, family reunions, birthday parties, and most recently - weddings. In 2012, four couples tied the knot at Keller's and this year there will be 13 weddings with more scheduled for 2014. Couples can choose to have their ceremony in the barn, which is complete with a bridal suite, or outside with the farm's pond as a backdrop.

During October, Keller's offers a pick-your-own pumpkin patch, hayrides, a playground, two corn mazes, and a 40' slide into a seven ton corn bin. Concessions are on site with burgers, hotdogs and the famous "Pickle Sickle", a popsicle made from frozen pickle juice. Plans to add corn on the cob, corn dogs and kettle corn are in the works. Their country store offers home-made soups, gourmet coffee, "Corny" t-shirts, Mt. Dew jelly (a crowd favorite), and other homemade items.

Every year, the Kellers dedicate the first Saturday in October as "First Fruits Harvest" with all proceeds from Keller's Corny Country donated to missions. One of their favorite ministries is a home in Cochabamba, Bolivia that houses children whose parents have been imprisoned. In 2009, the Kellers used the "First Fruits Harvest" funds to travel to Bolivia and construct a church in memory of their daughter, Josey Anna, who passed away in 2004.

Bryan works at Nemak and Tonya is a licensed dental assistant who left her job last September to market their farm full-time. Tonya also serves as President of the Tennessee Agritourism Association, is a member of the North American Farmers Direct Marketing Association, and the National Agritourism Professionals Association. In 2009, Keller's Corny Country won the Chamber of Commerce Agriculture Business Leader Award and "Best in Show" at the 2013 Dickson Farm Home & Garden Show.

"After five years we are finally seeing a profit from the farm", Tonya shares, "but most importantly, we are having fun and making an impact on the kids and families in our community."

Ribbon Cuttings
Pine Hills Golf Club
The Chamber held a ribbon cutting for Pine Hills Golf Club on Wednesday, August 14th on the putting green. Established in 1927, this nine hole golf course was revamped in April 2003 to become the tranquil 18 hole course it is today. The course offers bent grass greens, Bermuda fairways and roughs, ratings from 69.2 to 72.1, slopes starting at 125, and boasts serene Dickson County views. This tough, yet handicap friendly, course has helped make some of Dickson County's finest golfers, some of whom have gone on to play collegiately. Golf is a family sport, teaching life-enhancing values and Pine Hills Golf Club makes it their goal to be "Dickson's best family value". The course is open everyday from daylight to dusk. To reserve your tee time call (615) 375-1749 or visit EZlinks or GolfNow.

be local.
.

The Dickson Herald, Dickson Shopper and the Dickson County Chamber of Commerce are asking that very important question once again ... What if every household in Dickson County spent an extra $20 on September 20th?

Again this year The Dickson Herald, Dickson Shopper and Dickson County Chamber of Commerce will rally the residents of Dickson County to show up and support their community by investing 20 incremental dollars on Friday, September 20th with a Dickson County business.

As our Dickson County residents have demonstrated over the past three years, they like the idea of knowing they can make a difference in the local economy and have proven that investing in their own future by spending locally does have a very positive impact.

To encourage community participation, The Dickson Herald and dicksonherald.com will provide news stories detailing the campaigns local impact. Promotional ads will also publish in The Dickson Herald and Dickson Shopper to keep the campaign top-of-mind with our residents. Social Media updates provided by the Dickson County Chamber, Herald and Shopper will also ramp up the momentum to this special day.

We are looking forward to creating the excitement and buzz around $20 on the 20th event by inspiring our residents to support our local businesses and community.

Dickson County Fair Celebrates 89 Years of Family Fun

The 2013 Dickson County Fair will be September 2nd through the 8th at the fairgrounds on Highway 47 E. in Dickson.

This year's fair is set to be better than ever with a new carnival company providing the midway rides, including a double ferris wheel, and a continued tradition of focus on agriculture and home economic exhibits.

As always, the fair includes exciting events like the Demolition Derby, Truck Pull and Mini Tractor Pull; and searches for Miss Dickson County Fairest of the Fair along with her junior counterparts.

Contestants of all ages have the opportunity to showcase their work in contests for Baked Goods, Plants & Flowers, Field Crops, Preserved Foods, Quilts and more.

Livestock has always been, and continues to be, a driving force of the Dickson County Fair. This year's fair offers shows for Beef, Poultry, Sheep, Dairy and Meat Goats. In addition to livestock, there is a Cat Show and a 4-H Dog Show.

The fair always delivers great concessions - from hamburgers and barbeque to funnel cakes and cotton candy, the fair offers a great variety of special treats.

The celebration is bitter sweet for some, this year's fair marks the end of 40 years of service from it's President, Edgar Meeks, who is retiring. Mr. Meeks first attended the fair as a boy in 1935 and he remembers sleeping in the straw with his show cattle. Ever since that year, Mr. Meeks hasn't missed a Dickson County Fair with the exception of the three years he served our country in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Meeks says, "It has been my pleasure to serve as your board member, vice president, and president. With all the improvements I've seen over the last 40 years, I hope some things never change - that people come to the fair with their children to have fun and make memories." Thank you, Mr. Meeks for your service to Dickson County.

For a complete Fair Schedule, or more event information, stop by the Chamber Office to pick up a Fair Book or visit the Dickson County Fair Facebook page. See you at the Fair!
