A NOTE FROM PRINCIPAL TIFFANY ALBERTSON
|
Dear Parent(s),
It has been an exciting week at Bishop Luers. We have thoroughly enjoyed our visit with Fushiki High School students. They performed for us at an all-school assembly today and shared their favorite things about their visit to the United States. They will spend a few days in Washington, D.C., before heading back to Japan. We are looking forward to our visit to Fushiki High School in the summer of 2018. Many heartfelt thanks to all of our host families.
We welcome Shawn Prendergast, who is subbing for the dean's position. Shawn started Monday and has had a good week talking with students and learning the ropes of the discipline paperwork. He is doing a great job. As you may recall, we changed back to our old system for detentions before Christmas break. We made a lot of progress with students serving their detentions and working to make improvements. The one aspect of this system that we would like to resolve is the time out of class when students are in ISS. We are fine-tuning with some adjustments to keep students in the classroom. Our detention system will move forward as follows:
- A student who is issued a detention will have three days to serve the detention.
- If the detention is not served before or after school in the designated detention room, the student will be assigned a Saturday to serve the detention during Saturday School.
- Students who do not serve a Saturday School may be issued an out of school suspension and will be reassigned a new date by which the original detention must be served.
- In this system, the student never gets out of serving the original detention, thus all detentions should be served upon receiving them.
- If a student receives a detention that she/he feels is unfair, it should be discussed with the person who issued the detention. Administration does not remove detentions written by teachers or staff.
In an effort to keep students in class, Saturday Schools may be substituted for ISS in the tardy and attendance policy as well. Saturday School substitution will be at the discretion of the administration or the dean of students.
Grades for third quarter were due on Monday. Please be sure to check PowerSchool for your student's third quarter grade. Report cards will be issued to students.
Thank you to our guidance counselors, Becky Allegrini and LaToya Griffin. They have been working diligently to schedule students into classes for next year. If you have not turned in the yellow signed copy of your student's schedule, please return it to the guidance office as soon as possible. There are still a handful of students who will be meeting with counselors, but most have chosen classes.
When making travel plans for spring break, please keep in mind that March 31 is an eLearning day for teacher professional development. Assignments will be posted for students to work on during their day at home on Friday. For those unable to access assignments due to technology issues or early travel, assignments will be due on Tuesday after spring break. Assignments due via online submission are due by 7:45 a.m. Assignments that are turned in via a hard copy will be due at the beginning of the class period. Extended vacation days are unexcused per diocesan policy. Please refer to the handbook for extended vacation guidelines. We wish everyone a safe (and warm) spring break.
It is time for students to re-enroll for the 2017-18 school year. Every parent should have received an email on March 7 with the online re-enrollment instructions. We have improved our system for parents to complete the Financial Agreement form online; you can also pay the registration fee of $155 by credit card online or by cash or check in the Bishop Luers Business Office. Please complete this by April 1 (or before spring break); the registration fee will increase to $175 after April 1. If you did not receive an email with instructions or have other questions, please call Jenny Andorfer at Ext. 3139.
God's blessings to each of you. Tiffany Albertson Principal Bishop Luers High School 333 E Paulding Rd Fort Wayne, IN 46816 (260) 456-1261
