E-LEARNING DAY SEPT. 23
Friday, Sept. 23, will be an eLearning Day for students.

Canvas is the LMS (Learning Management System) used by the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend. This LMS allows teachers to create digital curriculum for students to access while at school or off-site. Your student will use Canvas for eLearning days, to download files, take quizzes, access vital links, view videos, and more!

Canvas is being used in districts in and around Fort Wayne as well as across the country. This tool does not replace the teacher, but helps to connect students and teachers in a new way. The technology gives students practical life skills that they will use for college and careers while enhancing the curriculum. By using Canvas students will make an easier transition to college.
Bishop Luers teachers and staff have been participating in on-going training, as well as weekly sessions to become experts in the classroom.  We are excited for our students and curriculum options!

We will hold our first eLearning/Professional Development day on Friday, Sept. 23. This is a scheduled Professional Development Day for faculty.  Assignments were posted at 11:59 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19. The teaching staff will be available from their Canvas account or email from 7:30-9:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 23, and daily in their regularly scheduled classes. Students will need computer access or can access through the mobile app if they chose to set it up. Student assignments will be due Tuesday, Sept. 27, at 8 a.m. These lessons and work are in addition to the regular school day.  We will also be using e-Learning days for inclement weather in the future.

Our temporary library in Room 104 will be open daily before school at 7:15 a.m. and after school until 3:45 p.m. There is limited seating available. Be sure that your child contacts his teachers if he is struggling with the computer or assignments so that we can help.

ATTENDANCE FOR eLEARNING SEPT.  23, 2016
  • If a student DOES NOT log into eLearning during the time required, Tuesday, Sept. 20, 8 a.m. to Tuesday, Sept. 27, 8 a.m., it will be an UNEXCUSED ABSENCE.
WALK-A-THON PARENT VOLUNTEERS
Walk-A-Thon is just around the corner on Friday, Sept. 30. Many of you filled out a Bishop Luers High School Parent Volunteer form. You should have already been contacted about volunteering.  If not, volunteers are needed to donate cookies, donate two-liter bottles of pop, help with serving lunch or work a checkpoint. Please call or email Christine Fabina at cfabina@bishopluers.org to volunteer. This is a fun-filled day for students and parents alike. Don't miss your chance to be involved in YOUR school! Walk-A-Thon money must be turned in by Sept. 27 to qualify for prize drawings. If you need assistance in raising funds, stop by Room 142 and check with  Mrs. Fabina for phone numbers of persons willing to help.
NOTICE TO SCHOOL CHOICE SCHOLARSHIP FAMILIES

Please watch for this in your mail! The forms MUST be signed for Bishop Luers High School to receive the Choice Scholarship monies and for families to receive the credit to their account. There is also a "revised" summary sheet  that needs to be signed for each student's file. If you do not receive your student's forms or have questions, please contact Jenny Andorfer at 260-456-1261, Ext. 3139.
PLEASE RSVP FOR SOPHOMORE GRANPARENTS/VIP DAY

It is important for the grandparent or VIP to RSVP to Tim Johnson, director of communications, at 260-456-1261, Ext. 3037. A parent, grandparent or special person must confirm that they will attend the Grandparents' Day before the sophomore student will be released from class to join his or her VIP on the morning of Oct. 14.
BISHOP LUERS ANNOUNCES DISTINGUISHED KNIGHT AWARD RECIPIENTS
Bishop Luers High School recently announced the recipients of the 2016 Distinguished Knight Awards after the celebration of the Mass for Homecoming on Sept. 16. Mary Jane Bradley-Millikan was named the outstanding alumnus, and Jack Zern received the honorary alumnus.
When Mary Jane Bradley-Millikan entered the doors of Bishop Luers in 1958, a 58-year love affair with the school began. She is a proud member of the Class of 1962.
Millikan has been, and continues to be, a dedicated mother of five, a wife of 50-plus years, a volunteer at St. John the Baptist Parish, Fort Wayne, and a volunteer in the Bishop Luers community.
Millikan's five children graduated from Bishop Luers where she was an involved parent. She takes pride in all the school renovation work that she and her husband, Mike, have done over the years, but she is proudest of the three generations of her family who have graduated from Bishop Luers High School.
Millikan has been a member of the Bishop Luers Alumni Board for the last 10 years. She is the first to step up to help with organizing class reunions or the golden knight ceremony. In 2008, Millikan spearheaded a 1962 class campaign raising funds to purchase the "knight" on the front of the school building.
Jack Zern has given time, talent, treasures, children and grandchildren to Bishop Luers High School. He has been part of this Bishop Luers community since 1976 when his oldest of five children began high school. Even though his youngest son graduated in 1985 and his oldest granddaughter did not enter Bishop Luers until 2007, he has faithfully served this Bishop Luers community, which he so loves.
Since 1980 he has volunteered his time to announce the girls' volleyball and boys' and girls' basketball games. Over 36 years of service, he has garnered the name of "GV" or "Golden Voice" by his family. At about two hours a shot for an average of 10 home games per sport, that would estimate to be over 2,000 hours of service.
Zern truly embodies the Luers Spirit. The mission statement speaks to the values that are held so dearly at this school - dignity, integrity, respect and responsibility. He is devoted to his faith, his family and to Bishop Luers.
For Zern, it is not just the honor of announcing these games, but it is the privilege of building so many special relationships with coaches, players, parents and other members of this community.

Location: St. John the Baptist Church lower level (Fort Wayne)

  • Are you aware that the FAFSA- free application for federal student aid, filing begins Oct. 1 for the first time! Are you ready?
  • Do you know enough about the EFC- expected family contribution formula, so that you don't make any mistakes that may disqualify you from receiving free financial aid?

It is never too early to know the ins and outs of financing a college education. These and many other areas important to effective college planning that are applicable for college bound students of any age will be discussed on Sept. 27 at St. John the Baptist Church (Fort Wayne) at 6:30 p.m.

FROM GUIDANCE ... COLLEGE REPRESENTATIVES VISITING BISHOP LUERS
College admissions representatives will be visiting Bishop Luers throughout the fall. These small group settings allow juniors and seniors to learn what the college has to offer both in and out of the classroom. These representatives are a great resource for students, and provide valuable information about the entire admissions process. In addition, these sessions are an economical way to determine the colleges they wish to visit in person.

A full schedule of visits is on Naviance.com. This site is also where students sign up to attend visits and request a Guidance pass. Visits are held in Room 144. Encourage your student to take advantage of these opportunities.
