FROM PRINCIPAL TIFFANY ALBERTSON: E-BOOK LEARNING
Dear Parent(s) and Friends,

Thank you to all who attended Back-to-School Knight. It is always nice to share what we are doing at Bishop Luers.

I have had a few questions about the e-books that we have adopted for the math classes. Our math department spent many hours reviewing books and attended workshops to review and analyze books before choosing what they felt would be the best options for our students. For those of us who are used to a traditional text, the concept of e-books may seem a little stressful. However, there are several advantages to the e-books:
  • Instantaneous feedback for students: When submitting work online, students do not have to wait and ask about a question. They can get immediate feedback and may make multiple attempts to get a problem correct, which helps in the learning process.
  • Instantaneous feedback for teachers: Students' grades, class averages and tough questions are immediately available for review. It is easy for a teacher to see which problems students had the most trouble with in order to review and re-teach. There is not the grading time delay, which should result in grades entered into Power School in a more timely manner.
  • Specified help: Students who are struggling with homework are not helpless until they see the teacher again. They are directed to videos pertaining to specific problems or textbook sections. There can even be offered the help of a live tutor while doing homework.
  • Preparation for online standardized testing: ISTEP, NWEA, all of our standardized testing is completed online. Questions from the e-books are presented in a variety of formats. Students will be more familiar with testing types of questions as well as more comfortable working online when taking high stakes tests.
  • Organization: Assignments, scores and review materials are all organized so that students don't lose the work.
  • Accessible: Homework can be completed on computers, tablets, or even phones and i-pods. Progress can be saved and restarted again later. They do not necessarily need a wifi connection. Once downloaded, the book can be accessed without wifi. For students who prefer to do work on paper, there is still an option for that.
  • Pages can be printed from a PDF format. Even with e-books, students can print copies to have the "feel of paper" if that is their desire.
  • Much of the learning in college is being done in the same format. Our younger teachers are excited about giving our students the opportunity to learn in ways similar to what they experienced in college. We can prepare students for the next step.
  • Availability: Students can always access their work. There is no need to remember to take their book home or to lug around a heavy textbook.
As with many new things, there needs to be some willingness to give them a try, experience something new, and take advantage of the benefits. We have had some families request a paper text. At this time, unless there are extenuating circumstances, we are not providing paper books. Doing both is cost prohibitive. If you have extenuating circumstances, please give me a call and we can discuss it. As a last note on e-books, the feedback we are receiving from the users, the students, has been very positive. I am looking forward to reviewing test results and analyzing grades.

Have a great weekend and Christ's peace be with you,

Tiffany Albertson

These representatives are a great resource for students, and provide valuable information about the entire admissions process. In addition, these sessions are an economical way to determine the colleges they wish to visit in person.

A full schedule of visits is on Naviance.com. This site is also where students sign up to attend visits and request a Guidance pass. Visits are held in Room 144. Encourage your student to take advantage of these opportunities.
