Dear Friends of Avery County Humane Society,

I am excited to be the new Executive Director of Avery County Humane Society. I started out as a volunteer working on special projects for the Board of Directors such as developing our Community Outreach and Education program, streamlining ordering and cost reduction, writing the safety program and training the staff.  Most recently, I volunteered as the volunteer coordinator. As Volunteer Coordinator, I met so many great enthusiastic people, who like me, have a love for animals and give a lot of their time freely to helping them be well adjusted pets for their new homes.

When I was approached about becoming the Executive Director I was ecstatic. This is a perfect fit. My professional background is in evaluating and developing procedures and employees to increase proficiencies and effectiveness. I did this on a large scale for many years and have an extensive business background. Personally I have been involved in helping animals in some way most of my life. I have been around shelters enough to know what works and what doesn't. I have a passion for helping all animals in need. This opportunity to help more animals on a larger scale will certainly bring me great joy.

I look forward to  helping the Avery Community reduce the number of unfixed animals, increase adoptions, find suitable homes for animals in need, and provide a welcome place for all to two-legged and  four-legged friends. Please fee free to visit us at the shelter - we would love to see you there.

Best Regards,

Bruce Malfatone
Executive Director

Check Our Bins In Grocery Stores
We've placed bins in Ingles, Lowes and Food Lion for food, treats and toy donations. So far, Avery County citizens have been generous and have help off set our very large food budget.

Store management has been more than receptive in allowing the Avery County school children decorated bins to be placed in prominent positions in all three stores. We are hoping to have one in the Lowes in Newland once the manager gets approval from headquarters.
