Dear Friend,

We were astounded by the marked success of our 9 Lives for $9 events held in both October and November. We adopted a total of 165 animals and set an outstanding all-time record for adoptions. We also neutered 163 animals that will no longer roam Avery County unfixed.  We started a food donor program with support from the Avery County school kids that is working well in Lowes, Ingles, Food Lion grocery stores and at Pet Supplies Plus in Boone. We've just begun an effort to get merchants involved in a credit card counter donation program.

None of this would be possible without your help. Our donors have enabled us to continue our shelter model by thinking outside the box and using creative programs like 9 Lives for $9, Fee Waived and Name Your Price to get our animals into good homes. Please help by giving whatever you can afford so that we can continue this noble effort in Avery County. We've made our online donations easy and secured with Norton Verisign system.

I would like to wish you and yours a very happy holiday season from everyone at Avery County Humane Society.

God Bless,

Merry Christmas From All Of Us
All were adopted from Avery County Humane Society

We're still at it, trying to fix every dog and cat that roams unfixed in Avery County. Donors have contributed money so lower income residents can get their animal fixed for $20. To have your dog or cat fixed can be expensive - costing well over $100 for the surgery. In some special cases, we'll pay for the whole procedure to avoid repeats of litters brought into the shelter.

Free roaming cats and dogs are the root cause of so many homeless animals and so many unnecessary deaths. As Bluto, left, puts it "Real men fix their dogs. So don't let yours roam unprotected."  You can help by spreading the word. We also have a Help Fix Me Club, where members contribute $25 to show they are taking this overpopulation seriously. Click to join.

Volunteer Dog Walkers Urgently Needed

When the seasonal volunteers left, we became short of dog walkers. These volunteers agree to come during the day and take a dog for a walk. It's not complicated and is really very simple. The walkers tell us that they love what they do and the dogs love it even more!. Please give an hour or two a week to help walk one or two dogs. You'll feel good and the dog will be so grateful!
