Dear Friends,
We are launching the largest effort in Avery County Humane Society's history to find good homes for the unusual number of cats and kittens that have been brought into our shelter over the past few months. The Petsmart and Best Friend's promotion normally runs November 10-18 for older cats, but two private donors have allowed us to extend this promotion through the end of November for all cats and kittens.
We have an enormous number of cats that are not fixed in Avery County and you can make a difference by contributing to our spay neuter efforts for low-income residents.

Food Drive On In AC
We've partnered with the Avery County school children who are decorating large donation cans that will be placed in Ingles, Food Lion and Lowes grocery stores. Each can will have four signs, coupled with the children's art work. Their creative art and food bins will be hard to miss.
Andy Grill, at Food Lion was so excited he said he would put signs in all the food isles pointing customers to the donor can located as you enter the store. Lowes in Tyne Castle has always supported us in past projects and Ingles donated hot dogs and buns for our summer grand opening.
It is great to see how Avery County businesses support us and we're sure the animals will love the variety of food, treats and toys donated. Thank you Food Lion, Ingles and Lowes for your help!

We're still at it, trying to fix every dog and cat that roams unfixed in Avery County. Donors have contributed money so lower income residents can get their animal fixed for $20. To have your dog or cat fixed can be expensive - costing well over $100 for the surgery. In some special cases, we'll pay for the whole procedure to avoid repeats of litters brought into the shelter.
You can help by spreading the word. We also have a Help Fix Me program, where residents can contribute $25 to show they are taking this overpopulation seriously. The donations are matched by two of our generous donors.
Free roaming cats and dogs are the root cause of so many homeless animals and so many unnecessary deaths. As Bluto, left, puts it "Real men fix their dogs. So don't let yours roam free." |

Black Cat Myth
Have you heard the myth that black cats are unsafe in October, in part because witches may try to adopt them for rituals? ASPCA has.
But their experts agree that it's just not true. They said the truth is "scary" because year-round, black cats are the least likely to get adopted in shelters across the U.S. "We also find that is true at Avery County Humane Society," said shelter manager Charlene Calhoun. She continued, "we have a few black cats that are extremely beautiful who, like Isis shown here, are under one year of age and free to a good home. We think of them as beautiful black beauties."
