Motorists Took Note and Avoided DNT Closure Area Last Weekend
Indulge us one more time this weekend!
Thank you NTTA customers! Thank you drivers! Thank you Plano! You read and heard our announcements and chose to avoid the Dallas North Tollway last weekend near Tennyson Parkway in Plano and Frisco. Special thanks to news media organizations for getting the word out.
No major incidents were reported, and traffic in the area moved as smoothly as possible when a major thoroughfare closes for nearly 67 hours. We appreciate your patience.
During the rare full closure, construction crews demolished the north segment of the Tennyson Parkway bridge over the DNT and then removed the rubble and 1,800 tons of sand that were used to protect the road surface. Despite Mother Nature dumping some heavy rains over the project Sunday afternoon, crews completed their work five-and-a-half hours early.
Now, we need your assistance again... as we will repeat the closure this weekend. Crews will install beams as part of the expansion of the Tennyson Parkway bridge.
This closure will begin at 9 p.m. Friday, June 17, when crews will begin single lane closures in both directions of the DNT. By 11 p.m., the Tollway will be fully closed in the area between State Highway 121 and Spring Creek Parkway. This closure will continue until 5 a.m. Monday, June 20. See details and a map of the closure area.
While the weather forecast is calling for a hot and dry weekend, if inclement weather moves in the process could be delayed and may have to be re-scheduled.
This weekend crews will begin the process of re-building the bridge. The first step is to bolt together a set of steel beams totaling 160 feet, and then place them across the Tollway with a very large crane.
NTTA and our construction teams are trying a different approach for this project. Since March, when we switched all traffic off of the northern bridge, crews began building new abutments (supports) that will hold the beams for the new bridge. Normally, there is a delay between demolition and then re-building. Remember, when both of the Tennyson Parkway bridges are re-built, their longer spans will allow for the addition of the fourth lane in each direction of the DNT. This should help relieve congestion.
In the coming weeks, as crews work to build the new bridge, most work will be performed with two lane closures, always at night.
During this weekend's closure, NTTA's communication team will update Facebook and Twitter with information on the status of the work, including when the DNT re-opens to traffic.
Again, we can't say this enough...NTTA appreciates the public's patience during the ongoing construction associated with the DNT Improvement Projects.
