The President George Bush Turnpike Western Extension, formerly known as State Highway 161, provides a new, approximately 11.5-mile link in the growing loop around Dallas. The corridor consists of the tolled PGBT Western Extension main lanes and the SH 161 frontage roads. Phase 1, which includes the frontage roads from Carrier Parkway to Interstate 20; Phases 2 and 3 consisting of the tolled main lanes between SH 183 and I-30; and Phase 4 extending from north of I-30 to I-20 are now all open to traffic. The first phase of the Phase 4 project opened to traffic on Oct. 13, 2012.

Construction update

Road Work Ahead SignMotorists continue to enjoy the benefits of the latest portion of the President George Bush Turnpike, extending from north of Interstate 30, south to I-20 in Grand Prairie, which opened to traffic on Saturday, Oct. 13.

Although the majority of the project is complete, work continues on two phases which include completing two remaining I-30 direct-connector ramps and the State Highway 161 frontage road at-grade railroad crossings between Main and Jefferson streets in Grand Prairie. As a result, drivers may see detours and closures along the corridor as crews continue placing topsoil and mulch, concrete paving, retaining wall work and other various tasks.

The I-30 direct connectors are scheduled to open in early 2013, and the SH 161 frontage roads at the Union Pacific Railroad are scheduled to open at the end of the year.

Toll rates for the PGBT Western Extension are posted at NTTA.org.
