Runway to Realway
Runway
So you read Instyle magazine faithfully. You love seeing the pics of celebrities photographed casually running errands around their city looking effortlessly chic and trendy. You know when New York fashion week is, and even though you've never been, you make it a point to catch the highlights online. Translation= you love a fresh new trend...on someone else. But when it comes to you being the one to rock a new trend, you don't know where to start.

This may be why: you've got to remember that you do not have to exactly emulate the pictures you've seen straight off the runways or in an editorial. Chances are you are a different size and body shape than the model, aside from the fact that fashion shows and photoshoots are styled for a specific "wow" factor that you may not necessarily need in your everyday life. You don't have to do a trend head to toe; pick the element you like about it and do it in small ways in which you are most comfortable.

                          For example:

 alexa chung

Lets look at Alexa Chung at the opening of the Versace store in SOHO. She looks great while rocking several of the season's trends- 1.any and everything burgundy, down to her handbag, 2.leather, 3.knit sweater and 4.smoking slippers. I would categorize this ensemble as Fall 2012's "Geek Chic". But you don't have to be geek or chic to replicate this look, you could choose to pull inspiration from any one of these trends individually!

Liking the 50 Shades of Red trend this season but not ready to wear red, crimson or burgundy head to toe like Alexa? Then just rock one burgundy piece paired with a neutral or go for a red lip.

Been wanting to wear a leather skirt but afraid you'd be mistaken for an out of place dominatrix? Then choose a longer length a-line black leather skirt and pair it with a modest sweater or knit top for a Mod Chic look. (*Mod/60's inspired is also a major trend this season!) Or choose a bright colored leather piece for some statement colorblocking. Not a fan of skirts? Throw a leather biker jacket over a dress or tee and jeans.

DKNY leather skirt and blouse

I personally have been living in smoking slippers! They are not just for skirts folks! Rock embellished smoking slippers with colored skinny jeans for a trendy look, studded slippers for an edgy appearance or even velvet slippers and skinny chords to go preppy.
