SHAPING THE FUTURE TOGETHER

Dear Friends,

We hope that you are enjoying summer with your family and friends. Your continued generosity and support of MAP is an example of universal philanthropy, hope and global citizenship. Our work together demonstrates the impact we can make in changing the lives of impoverished children around the world. Please read more to learn about the work you have made possible and the success of our many community-volunteer fundraising activities.

This quarter we have been focusing on developing MAP's presence in social media and the business community. We are also pleased to report that MAP was the recipient of a Social Media Grant from the Neda Nobari Foundation.

Additionally, we led our first Information Session at Qualcomm in San Diego, CA. Thanks to one of our long-standing supporters, this connection was made and Qualcomm generously allowed a few members of our Board and Advisory Board to present MAP to their employees. This event has successfully helped in developing our Matching Gift Program at Qualcomm.

Please continue connecting us to Businesses, Foundations and Corporations, and help us develop our Corporate Matching Gift Program. To learn more please contact Maryam Winans at (925) 998-1136 or fatemeh@momsagainstpoverty.org

On behalf of the children we serve, we thank you for your support and look forward to continuing our work together.

Sincerely,

The MAP Team

OUR COMMUNITY AT WORK

Thanks to your participation and the efforts of our volunteers, 2015 has been filled with several successful fundraising activities. We are deeply grateful to all the sponsors, volunteers, businesses and individuals that made these events possible:

  • The Forest Hill Garden Club in CA held an event and raised close to $4,000 to provide supplemental education for the children at Bryant Center in San Francisco, CA.
  • The Bay Area All-In Group held their 4th annual event; proving their dedication to the children by raising nearly $24,000. The funds will be used to build a therapy center, a library and to renovate the kitchen at Shahid Ghiasvand Orphanage in Iran. Additionally, funds will be used to establish classroom libraries to support the guided reading program at Cesar Chavez & Green Oaks Academy in Palo Alto, CA.
  • For the 5th year, SAHA (Satellite Affordable Housing Associates) partnered with MAP to hold their fundraising event.  Proceeds from this event which amounted to $15,000 will support the construction of a school in Senegal, Africa.
  • MAP's 2nd annual fundraiser in Orange County was yet another success and raised over $65,000.
  • Save the Date for MAP's 8th Annual Fundraising Gala in San Francisco on September 26th.

MAP in the U.S.

The poverty rate for children under 18 in the U.S. is one out of five. This means 14,646,500 children live below "poverty threshold".  (U.S. Census) For the first time in at least 50 years, a majority of U.S. public school students come from low-income families and 51% of students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade were eligible for the federal program that provides free and reduced-price lunches. This indicates that a growing number of children are less prepared for school, are less likely to have support at home or exposed to enriching activities outside of school, and are more likely to drop out and never attend college. (The Washington Post)

In addition to providing food for these impoverished children, MAP supports various supplemental educational programs in the U.S. This year, MAP supports the Guided Reading Program at Cesar Chavez & Green Oaks Academy in Palo Alto, CA; an after-school science program at Bryant Center in San Francisco, CA, Vocational Training at HAAS workplace readiness program in Hawaii, and the Mentor Program at Blind Children's Learning Center in Santa Ana, CA.

The construction of our new school in Mbour, Senegal is going well. The school was being built for two years with the help of Natangué Sénégal. As the construction progressed, we realized that it would be beneficial to finish the construction in the current year. We need to raise $29,700 for building three additional classrooms for the second phase of this project.

MAP in Iran

We are pleased to report that Siamak Farah from the Alborz Alumni Group has just returned from visiting our school in Asheghloo. This school was built last year thanks to the donations from Alborz Alumni Group and MAP's matching funds program. Some of the kids have never seen a computer before, and now they have a fully equipped computer lab. 95 girls at this school are getting an excellent education with some of their school administrators holding Master's Degrees themselves. The whole community has risen to embrace this school. Girls are flocking to the school from miles away. Some drive from 30 km away to go to this school.

We are pleased to report that the construction of three new schools in Iran is going well. The girl in this video is thanking the donors for building them a school and is asking for a library and computer lab to be built at their new school.

MAP in India

MAP is now supporting five Learning Centers near the poorest slums in Raygada. Meet Sidhartha who is one of the 450 children enrolled in MAP's free tuition school and he attends Learning Center #4 (In Hounsing Board Colony). He is from a village called Khaliguda which is about 3km away from our Learning Center. He rides to our Center every morning and evening with his bicycle. He lives with his mother who is a cleaning lady and earns rs3000/- a month ($50). Without our Center, she would have had to use almost one third of her income to pay for her sons tuition and education expenses. This is the main reason why our Centers are so important in providing access to quality education for impoverished children without denying them of that right due to financial difficulties. Sidhartha is now studying in grade 7, he comes to class every single day and he is one of our most loved students! We are so proud to do this imperative work, and thank our donors for making our vision their own.

MAP in Cambodia

The Children at HOPE Children's Home are thriving. This year the children had two visitors from MAP. We are grateful to Alex Mortazavi and Sayeh Yabandeh for their generosity, kindness and taking time to visit our children in Cambodia.

MAP in Afghanistan
Schools are in full session in Afghanistan and the 2,400 students at Sorya High School are thriving in MAP supported computer, literacy, peace and education programs.
