REPORT BACK FROM THE AFL-CIO CONVENTION IN L.A.:
WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?
Wednesday, November 20
7:30 PM
Workmen's Circle
1525 S. Robertson Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90035

This year's AFL-CIO convention, held in Los Angeles in early September, asked:
1.  What's the future going to be for working people?
2.  How can we build a real movement for broadly shared prosperity?
3.  What should unions look like tomorrow?

WHERE DID THESE DISCUSSIONS LEAD?  WHAT RESOLUTIONS WERE PASSED?  HOW WILL THEY BE IMPLEMENTED?  WHAT CAN WE DO TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CHANGING FACE OF LABOR? HOW DO WE BROADEN OUR GRAND COALITION TO DEFEAT THE RIGHT-WING?

For a report back from Chloe Osmer, AFL-CIO Senior Labor Organizer, as well as Eric A. Gordon, Chair of the SoCal Chapter of the National Writers Union and former director of Workmen's Circle SoCal, as well as Rossana Cambron, reporter on the convention for People's World on-line.  Be part of the solution and learn how you can participate in the struggle to make real changes in the lives of American working people and our allies among the 99%.

We will serve light refreshments, but more importantly, we want your presence and your voice as we continue to strengthen and broaden the labor and progressive movement.

ART EXHIBIT: A SHENERE VELT GALLERY
Ruben's artwork is selling like hotcakes! His exhibit is available for viewing
by appointment through January 31, 2014.

Blind Artist Ruben Parga's opening reception was a huge success. His exhibition, "Insight" at the Workmen's Circle gallery, continues through January 31, 2014.

In his native Mexico, Ruben Parga started exploring the world of art as a child. At the Universidad Latinoamericana in Mexico City he studied graphic design and photography.

After going completely blind in December 2009, Parga continued his exploration of techniques and materials at art classes at the Braille Institute. His primary focus has been ceramic sculpture, but also printmaking, basketry, and mosaics. His work is represented in many private collections.

"In the transition to a new way of living," Parga says, "my blindness stopped me for a while. But my drive to create art, to offer the world my particular insight, was stronger than my physical limitation. I know now that blindness will never stop my impulse to keep making art."

Parga is known for his series of ceramic masks, depicting the range of emotions known to the human condition.

"My life is not over. I refuse to stop growing," Parga says.
